This is the problem with people these days. Just cos you are dealing with serious business does not mean you should forget your sense of humor (assuming you had one in the first place). Things need to change. More needs to be done to encourage the youth to get into politics. Bercow did that for most youth including me and quite a few of my friends. Tell you what, even Boris does very well to engage young people in politics too. I don't like much of Boris' policies but that part of his character, I wish more politicians, nay, more humans had that quality.

The UK education system must have suffered almost a death blow if the commentators here are any indication. The majority appear to have no clue as to how democracy functions. Bercow stood up staunchly for the sovereignty of the House in the tradition of 17th jurists. He deserves our thanks and certainly not condemnation and defamation from the ignorant.

You are kidding aren't you? He abused his position. He was supposed to be a neutral referee, not an active participant. Instead he changed the rules mid stream to assist one side of the cause. He was trusted with vast latent power only because previous speakers had been too scrupulous to abuse it. As soon as he got the opportunity after the 2017 hung parliament, he did. No other single person can change the constitution with no explanation, no warning. and no appeal.

I can understand that british people are not happy with their parliament, but the whole discussion about Brexit seems pretty strange from a german point of view. How can anyone expect to have „great trade deals“ with the rest of the world when you reduce your market from 450 million people to about 55 million people? Why didnˋ t you have those great deals in the past? Germany is one of the biggest export nations under EU rules. No one prohibited the UK to be an export nation. Japan refused the UK the trade conditions that you had in the EU. The UK was very important as a member of the EU, outside the EU you lose a lot of this importance. It would have been of much greater use for everyone if the UK would have used this effort to improve the EU rather than to leave the EU. There will be a lot of disappointment on both sides in the near future and that is really a pitty!
@darrenshaw7675 жыл бұрын
1966masy then why does not the EU just revert back to a common market instead of trying to become a superstate?

@1966masy5 жыл бұрын
The EU has the idea to be more than a common market. And „democracy“ is more than the vote over „Brexit“. There are 27 other countries in the EU and 49 percent in the UK. Do not misunderstand me. The EU has more great problems than the UK has great deals, but it has still the greater opportunities than the UK with Brexit. I agree that the EU should start to solve its own great problems rather than being trapped in discussions and negotating with a country that wants to go its own way.

Black Philip I’m not a fan of any contemporary politician, but you’re just nitpicking for its own sake; the guy clearly had a fair bit to say, which isn’t particularly easy to ad-lib (unless you’re an orator in the vein of, say, the late great Johnathan Bowden, of course).

From Australia, I only watched the House of Commons because of Speaker John Bercow. He is the benchmark of what a Speaker is supposed to do and be, in all our Weatminster parliamentary systems. Too often, the Speaker is a puppet of the executive, and parliamentary democracy is diminished as a consequence. Vale, John Bercow; it's not only the UK that admires you and will miss you.
