For almost a century, UK towns like Blackpool and Skegness enjoyed huge crowds of holiday makers every summer. As all of Britain flocked to the seaside.
They came in their thousands every day to lounge on the beach and enjoy the entertainment venues which sprung up along the beachfronts of Britain's coast.
But now, these former holiday hotspots are suffering as Brits look elsewhere for their holidays.
How did this happen? What led to the decline? And what can be done to reverse it?

You seem to have missed a huge problem, these seaside towns, with horrendous deprivation, have now been targeted by ruthless criminals, drug gangs. The crime rate and violence has escalated markedly. While police do not have the resources to address the problem.

It is the other way around. If business invested in "seaside towns" the whole thing is turned around. The problem people in the hood get driven out as it shows up more and people have jobs in tourism. All year around like Brighton. There is so much money in holiday towns, but "business" do not have the relationship with PEOPLE as they used too - it is not as if they care less about their own people or staff like Cadburys or even the Soviet UNION did - they are even LOWER than the ones they criticise. Days out with the companies they work for at the seaside and work holidays? Which BIG CORP does that these days? Oh yes they could if they invested in South End on Sea etc...and proper lights too like Blackpool Illuminations. None of these "bad light LED" neon look. Ugly. You just need to get some big visionaries in who push all the naysayers out the way. What do they know? No point in asking the same dimwits that have created all the ugliness. No petty officials in the way you would be surprised how much progress can be made.... Fairy lights everywhere and penny arcades...Brighton is busy all year around. The way you get rid of a "jobsworth" is to just sack them. When idiot town councillors are going bankrupt as they invest in "Netflix" like the Jehovah Witnesses, you know they are not only corrupt but thick and maybe lost their marbles. Why not invest in Torquay? Among others...or these towns end up like Hastings....the same councils that ruined them from a lack of imagination and greed, let the housing out to all the "drug users and people on social benefits". Get them out the way and your problem is solved....They ruin everything they touch every day and you can rely on them for one thing only. To make everything worse....until someone gets them out the way. Plenty of tradesman would turn up in 24 hours if you just got these idiots and "piggy in the middles" out the way. Things will be different when folk understand what Podcasting 2.0 is. Value for Value means that eventually, one day, every time anyone does or contributes anything ONLINE they will have automatic copyright and get a KER CHING in their phone. PAID FOR YOUR WORK (instead of others "copy cat it first". It shows up on the distributed LEDGER. Once people understand how this works this is goodbye to PIGGY IN THE MIDDLE taking all your earnings. After all Adam Curry has always been the Pod father, even Steve Jobs knew that.... Resources? You might say that. Even the Chief of the UK Police had to go on RT Telly years ago to explain there was no platform to explain why they cannot prosecute criminals in the UK. Their budget is too small and the criminals are too rich to prosecute. Says it all....The Government are happy with that so "It is ELEMENTARY" they are benefitting or have some incentive to keep that status quo or state of play. I am in south Mancs, its OK & no (or minimal) for problems.. Used to shop regularly shop in "town" but not been for several years. Piccadilly is full of dr*g people & tents everywhere. Meanwhile the incomers are complaining about four & five star hotels! There are also no hotel or B&B vacancies in seaside destinations, all fully booked for some reason.. Native hard working families have no chance.. Be wise with your vote folks.

Councils have double yellow bands almost everywhere, no free car parks by the beach, all very expensive for a family day out. That's another aspect, also retirees taking up occupation with limited spending other than on care. The seaside needs regentrifying generally, there's nothing worse than taking a holiday where it's not only cold and wet, but looks ugly and run down.

The problem for Britain's seaside towns is that they have become dumping grounds where larger towns and cities send their unemployable dross. There is a shortage of affordable housing so these boarding houses and small hotels have become benefits bedsit land.

The clips here from the 50s show there was NO travel industry THEN....we lived in Gibraltar 55 to 58...Fuengirola etc there was almost Nothing there...anywhere..!!...We used to stay in a little farmhouse..which is still there now...everywhere we went the Spanish people would come out to see the English family who turned up a motor car..!!!...Those fabulous beaches were EMPTY...we virtually NEVER saw another British person ANYWHERE in the region of Malaga to Seville..!!!...Hard to believe NOW..!!....Miss those days..Miss my dear Parents..!!...Does anybody know where the years went...??!!??

Notice the nice cars outside the Council Buildings. Or outside their "work from home" drives. Heating bills paid too. In the last financial crisis our local "Town Councillor" was on 600k a year plus a "million" pay off to leave. More than our Prime Minister. No one seems to be checking....but EVEN THE PRIME MINISTER WOULD SAY THAT WAS OUT OF ORDER. Some jumped up Councillor on six times the PMs wages? The same smug mid wits who sunk the towns of Britain and invest in "Netflix" for the councils as they are COMPANIES. Illegal as that is the PEOPLES MONEY. They did not consent to that or why not have a DAILY VOTE ON THEIR WEBSITE AND ASK? Oh yeah. They rule by deceit and trickery. Dirty Tricks. You do not need to be Sherlock Holmes to work it out. We visited Blackpool in 2022 to do 2 days at the Pleasure Beach. The park was decent but the town is falling down, so dirty and just had a horrible unsafe vibe. We would never have gone if not for the park, and we will never go back. I can't see much of a future for the Pleasure Beach.

We have seen lots of decline as the years go by, but one thing that has never changed is the Pleasure Beach, and as long as you stick to the main areas it fine. A high percentage of the old boarding lodges on the back streets are crack dens 😪

I moved into Blackpool about 2 years ago, so I've seen the residential side more than the tourist side now. The whole town needs improving, but the council pumps money into one thing - tourism. And that would be fine if the rest of the town wasn't in such a terrible state. I'm surprised anyone comes here for a holiday because you only need step off the prom into the back alleys and residential streets to see the true Blackpool. Rundown, piles of rubbish, drug abuse, houses that resemble slums, alcohol abuse.... pot holes everywhere.

@@goatsummoner you’re so right. It is possible to walk the tourist areas, then take a sideways glance down a back alley and see the deprivation. We couldn’t believe the buildings that are left in ruins, windows out, mattresses hanging out of them, pigeons roosting in the empty broken down rooms, crack addicts lying on the ground. Horrific 😪

@goatsummoner Gosh, yes, it was such a shock to see the disrepair of so many houses and hotels. We stayed at The Velvet Cosster apartments just a street or two away from Pleasure Beach, and it was a lovely well maintained building so we got very lucky. I would love to see Blackpool cleaned up if only fir its amazing history.

My partner (lived in Blackpool and the surrounding areas all his life) has said he wants to move away before we think about having kids because he doesn't feel like it's a good place to raise them. I live in bournemouth and it costs more than £100/night for anyone to get a hotel room down here when they come and visit. I went to Tunisia for a week for all inclusive resort, 25 degrees for £204, why on earth would you come here?

My home town of Bournemouth is still very nice. The Somerset and Dorset railway was closed about 1965. This allowed people from York, Bradford, Manchester etc a through train to Bournemouth West. Families would get on the train in those towns on a Saturday morning, arrive in Bournemouth by tea time, book into their B&B and then spend the whole week there and return back on the following Saturday. My Aunt had a B&B five minutes walk from the station, 10 minutes walk from the Square and another 10 minutes to the beach. Sadly the last time we were there we went for a walk from our hotel to the pier via the east cliff ZigZag and beach. A large party was just vacating the area immediately east of the pier, and they just walked away and left all their rubbish, and it was massive. I could imagine two workers would have taken five or six hours to sort ( for re-cycling) and remove the mess. Bournemouth ratepayers would have paid for that. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I would never have believed it. But Bournemouth seems to have come through alright because on our three visits it seemed very lively day and night, with the beach as popular as I remember in the 1950’s.

Weston Super Mare . . five years ago the council decided to "invest" in property ! They purchased and knocked down one of the two shopping centres, a large area of retail and residential property to regenerate it into "new modern shopping centre with "top" names. Today only a small part has been rebuilt, and many of these buildings are now empty. Vacated because the new businesses cannot make money. The undeveloped land looks like a bomb zone. The heart has been torn out of the town, try and find a decent quality shop. Many residents drive to Cribbs Causeway shopping centre at Bristol for a decent shopping experience.

A lot of the same applies to the beach towns on the New Jersey shore in the US. They used to be really popular but now with jet travel to Florida/Caribbean and air conditioning at home things have changed. It is now mostly day trippers (Bennies aka people from Bayonne, Newark, Elizabeth who don’t stay over and don’t spend much money) and those who do go compare the cold/rough North Atlantic waves to the calm turquoise waters of the Gulf Coast/Islands. Some towns like Asbury Park have found new markets/customers while others have not and are suffering. The same applies to Atlantic City which once had a monopoly (pardon the pun) on East Coast casino gaming but now has newer competition everywhere including places closer to the New York City market.

The major issue is skin cancer. When I grew up in a Pembrokeshire seaside village, the beaches were packed all day with people sunbathing, they'd only reappear in the evening and 'flood' back into the towns. Visit somewhere like Tenby now... Holiday makers (grockles) milling round the town all day, no one on the beach.

Years of Tory austerity, COVID-19, and now the cost of living crisis means that many people don't have spare cash, even for a day out with children. Also, wealthier local authorities pay seaside resorts like Blackpool to take vulnerable people who ought to be receiving services in their home towns. It depends on what you consider expensive. For example, you can get a return ticket from Boston to Cancun (Mexico) for under $300 or from Seattle to Nassau (Bahamas) for under $460. Frankly, it's not as cheap as for Brits, where many destinations in southern Europe are under 100USD from the UK.

What’s wrong? A huge list ... - cheap flights to the Mediterranean that have far, far better weather - cheap accommodation when you arrive - government cut backs in seaside towns at all levels, closing down police services, no road maintenance, no funding for building maintenance, no fair council and business taxes ... and much more, causing the towns to fall into ruin and businesses going bust, leaving behind empty shops - overpriced accommodation in rundown, crap towns where it rains all of August - much better holiday attractions in Mediterranean resorts that don’t send families bankrupt to get into I lived in Weston-super-Mare for 6 years. Since leaving it in 2019, it’s become a depressing hell hole when I go back to visit friends. Who in their right mind would choose a week in that crap town over a week in Greece that costs much less? What’s happened to British seaside towns? No brainier, really.

I’m from Blackpool and grew up there in the 50s and 60s..I used to sell ice cream from a very small kiosk on the beach in 1967..packed to capacity..it was the advent of cheap flights which ruined it all in the 70s..plus the fact that many people started buying homes in Spain etc..Central Station in Blackpool was one of the busiest stations in the World at one point!!!Now Blackpool is run down with huge drug addiction and many buildings in disrepair …Butlins is now replaced with Thailand..there was a huge amount of crime in Blackpool in the 30s to,60s. Especially in the War with the black market flourishing

Its interesting for me that the british homeland tourism basically died. In comparision in germany the coast is still a hot spot for sea tourism for germans, even with as well not that good weather compared to the south. (i am from austria)

It is not only crime and drugs that are the problems but also people with mental issues that are constantly moving to these seaside places.

Local Authorities seem to be complicit in the downfall of all these areas. Double Yellows and extortionate parking fees before you even start.

greed all these towns have made fortunes but the money has not been put into the towns its been put in banks by greedy business owners weather can be overcome if the resorts have lots to do at a reasonable cost which will not happen Britex is a way of keeping poorer brits in the UK

People _would_ visit the coastal resorts if people were both made aware of, and galvanized enough to maintain their fundamental rights and freedoms. Unfortunately, the state has, and still *continues* to ensure that that doesn't happen. How can this and this alone be the overriding factor in determining whether or not people in Britain use beaches?? Because people would be able to work directly at solving the underlying causes to their difficulties in life based on what they recognise works for them based on what they're able to learn about what brings about solutions for them. This in turn then means that destructive inclinations in their life can begin to diminish naturally, which means that they'll be more free from the inhibiting factors preventing progress of their very being. This then means that they can begin to brainstorm and formulate solutions based on what they recognise works, as well as a more positive and prosperous disposition. This then brings in the tourists. Essentially, the decline in people visiting coastal areas coincides with how the state treats them. All very much by design for the last 730 years I'm sure.

Clear clean waters and cocktails bars with music on the white sandy beaches. Dorset was really lovely last year, going to Blackpool this year, let’s see the difference.

For towns allegedly suffeeing from not enoufh holidayers they sure arent priced for it. How is it cheaper to stay in nice resorts in france or italy than run down seaside locations in the uk

I went to Devon for a nice 2 weeks holiday in a 3 stars hotel, it was a bit sad, it was august 2015, the weather was a bit sunny the first 3-4 days and then it started to rain and it became cloudy. The wind was strong and the food at the pubs wasn’t that great. For 2 weeks, with just B&B and the renting of a car (because I live in central London and I don’t have a car), I paid £2250…! The next year I went to Morocco (Agadir, on the seaside) all inclusive (food and all drinks) for 2 weeks, I paid £1990 (including the flight) and the weather was absolutely stunning, sunny everyday and warm. The major problem? English hotels and B&B are way too overpriced, why would I spend so much money to stay in a country where the weather is not guaranteed?! There are B&B in the middle of nowhere, in the countryside, with nothing to do or see, with terrible wet cloudy weather and they charge £190 a night!! Ridiculous.

These places are so beautiful. But there are so many opportunities, f.ex. when some areas in the world becomes so warm, tourists would love to stay in colder weather's, or all kind of weather.

Obviously the package holiday and all inclusive has not helped,unfortunately times move on, the weather is so unpredictable, and to a big extent the business owners themselves have not helped,, poor b and b, tatty seaside cafes selling inedible food, poorly maintained buildings no investment to improve, by that I mean some saying ohh it's been in the family 100 years, yes the place looks like it,,council can soen money on the pavements,trees,green areas, but business must do there bit,,

The climate? The sea is freezing, even during a very hot summer. But most summers barely get above 22c. Too simple to go abroad now for guaranteed weather.

Also there have been several initiatives over the last few decades of uprooting London and big city council tenants from big estates and resettling them in towns like Hastings. The proceeding generations of whom, well you know what I'm saying..

Even the working class in Britain can now afford to go abroad for holidays in sunny beaches...no brainer these seaside towns with dismal weather and no discernible charm (besides childhood memories for those who remember travelling there in their younger years) are in decline

Redirect the money currently withheld from the allegedly corrupt UN/UNRWA and invest it into one of the British seaside towns. But that won't happen, the money will likely be kept in a nice interest account until the 'investigation' is completed and all are cleared of any wrongdoing and then it will be sent off with the interest added.

Open casinos (bring in tourism and create jobs) and improve train and CHEAPER connections. Crime rate is already there, but with money coming from casino it will help to at least make the town more vibrant and add levy to the casino to use the money to redevelop the towns.
