I had a hard time believing what is happening to Blackpool in recent years. Let me confess; I was not excited about adding Blackpool to the list of the worst places in the UK or the worst seaside towns in England in my videos. I just had to do so because that is consistent with our ideals of standing by nothing but the truth, no matter whose ego is bruised. It’s saddening to see a grim example of how a lovely town can fall from grace to grass in the seaside town of Blackpool. But what happened to Blackpool? Owing to the plenitude of negative rankings of the town these days, I decided to probe deeper into those rankings. My discoveries will definitely you.
Where Is Blackpool?
Blackpool is a large seaside town and resort in Lancashire. Located northwest coast of England, Blackpool is the main settlement within the Blackpool borough. Perhaps best known by sports lovers for being home to Blackpool FC, or for Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Blackpool Tower, the town is also a popular seaside resort in the UK, but now among the worst of them.
It is the town currently with the largest population in the county with 145,007 residents. The urban settlement’s last known population of 147,663 makes it the most populous settlement in Lancashire and the 50th in the UK. This huge town occupying an area of 34.47 kilometers square (or 13.31 square miles) used to be a great resort. Sitting by the Irish Sea, it is between the Ribble and Wyre rivers, 43 kilometers (or 27 miles) north of Liverpool and 64 kilometers (or 40 miles) northwest of Manchester.
The Historical Perspectives of Blackpool
Many people would trace the history of Blackpool as far back as the period of the start of railways when they thought those seaside towns started growing. However, the local history of this town goes back much further than that! It even predates those holidays of the Lancashire Mill towns. Two discoveries gave this hint in 1970.
A skeleton of an elk was found on a site at Carleton, across Blackpool Sixth Form College. Barbed arrowheads found with that carcass are an indication that it didn’t die naturally but rather was hunted by man. And it was estimated to be over 11,000 years old which was so far the earliest evidence of human habitation in the north of Britain. The second set of discoveries was the Roman coins found at Rosall some of which had been in existence around AD 80.
The name of the town Blackpool itself came from the discolored waters of ‘le pull.’ The waters discolored streams draining Marton Mere and Marton Moss through peat lands. As the stream ran alongside Blackpool Old Road it created a pool with a seemingly black color that went into the sea near the place now known as Manchester Square. The name was first seen as ‘Blackpoole‘ in the 1602 Bispham parish baptismal register.
Edward Tyldesley, the Squire of Myerscough, who was the son of the Royalist Sir Thomas Tyldesley, was the first to build a house in the area which was named ‘Foxhall.’ Foxhall was built towards the end of the 1600s.
The Glorious Past
Back in the late 1780s, there were four large hotels catering to the well-to-do in Blackpool society namely, Bailey’s, which is now the Metropole, and Forshaw’s, now the Clifton Arms, Plus Hudson’s, and Hull’s. Based on the standard of those days, they were in the class of at least 8-star hotels of modern times. At Bonny’s, there was another offer of accommodation at King Edward VII, Chapel Street, and yet, at Elston’s, later known as the York Hotel. Visitors to the coast at this time enjoyed horse riding on the beach. They could walk on the 6 yards wide promenade and enjoy archery facilities together with bowling greens.
The most significant event that contributed to the early growth of Blackpool occurred in 1846. That was when a branch line to Blackpool from Poulton was completed. It was on the main Preston and Wyre Joint Railway route from Preston to Fleetwood. While this resulted in the decline of Fleetwood resort, it caused a serious boom for Blackpool.

I've recently moved to Blackpool primarily because I could no longer afford to live in Manchester. It's got it's problems and poverty like any other town or city in the UK. But I find it Very clean. Resident's as well as tourists seem genuinely happy. It's always busy which must account for something. Sure it's not perfect......but where is nowadays?

No mention of the beautiful ballroom, the traditional and wonderful circus, the vintage trams, music on the North Pier, the Winter Gardens, the family zoo, the pleasure Beach, world firework championships, the Iluminations, Funny Girls. Yes, Blackpool has it's problems (mostly imported from other parts of the Uk), but if you pick and choose where to go, it's a wonderful place to visit.

Agree with Blackpool Tower ballroom Tower etc used be great when I went as a kid but now got pay 3 bits where use to pay 1 price or 2 forget now (think was Tower with ballroom) and circus now it's run with Merlin attractions and notice £56 adults and kiss extra £40 (I think forget how much. So basically not cheap ok pay on line might be cheaper. {ok may be for 4-6 attractions, i.e., Tower, Sealife, Madam Tousauds, etc} I did notice £19.50 on the day for Madam its alot of money for families plus have pay separately for Pleasure Beach, Zoo ...thank god don't have kids.. you wonder why people go overseas as you get better money for value.

Exactly . Yes it has its issues like a lot of other places in the uk but a lot of these videos just concentrate on the negative side giving the place a bad undeserved rap . Also if you know where to go there are a lot of other things to do as well eg Stanley park , zoo , sealife centre, sandcastle etc. There are also pretty very close pretty seaside resorts of st Anne’s , lytham , Cleveleys fleetwood bispham , piers , tower , pleasure beach , shows , events eg fireworks championships , arcades, casinos, novelty shops, tons of cheap lovely pubs / cafes / restaurants / bars etc etc it goes on and on . I even got a ferry over to knott end the other day and had a great day shopping st Freeport . it’s also close to places like Southport , morcambe, Lancaster , peak and Lake District . It’s now even open till January with the Christmas area at the front and a new all year round indoor entertainment complex being built at car park near coral island . Most other towns are boring just with a shopping centre and a club and a few bars yet people from them slag Blackpool off - I stayed in a few for a few days and was bored to death . Just like all uk a lot of it depends on the weather of course . And even though as not as much employment opportunities as in the cities but unlike a lot of other seaside resorts there are still a lot of businesses and retail and business parks around the area so there are still jobs if your willing to work a bit harder than in a city but you’ll still find work . What other seaside resort has all this ? If it was that bad why does it attract the most tourists every year ? I like living here - only thing that really gets me down about the place are the druggies, beggars and the weather but that’s the same as a lot of places in the uk not just specific to Blackpool

As a tourist from Australia, I was in Blackpool about twenty years ago and decided to return this year, what a disappointment. so many shops closed and houses abandoned, for me one of the worst aspects was the amount of litter in the streets, just disgusting. I hope Blackpool can bounce back

Shops are closed and houses are abandoned all over the country. Blackpool is no exception. I take issue the the litter problem. Walk along the prom (prom prom) or in the town centre & I think the cleanliness is extremely good. I've never seen excessive litter infact hardly any litter. I'm not saying it's not on the back streets or alleyways. But in general it's I find most areas very clean & a lot cleaner than other towns & cities in the UK.

The local council does not seem to have given up and, therefore, there is still hope. All the redundant multi-bedroom guest houses need to be compulsorily purchased and need to be reconfigured. A North West company with good ideas and a track record is Urban Splash. There is a large expanse of land at the back of the town that becomes an industrial and commercial area for companies and designate a development zone with various grants and discounts. I think. also that the working class is a little more sophisticated than fifty-plus years ago and the emphasis of the holiday 'product' needs to go more upmarket but without losing the town's intrinsic value. It still has huge potential with its beaches, entertainment venues and ease of access.

Had my three days in Blackpool (late November)and had a great time! Stayed at the Lyndene. Crowd was a bit old for me (even though I'm in my 60's!), but the entertainment and the hotel were good. Pubs, clubs, shows and restaurants were great as well as the illuminations. Three day tram pass was a great buy as it let me get around easily without driving. A few Jakeys on the back streets but you get that everywhere nowadays.

Lot's of old picture pre 2012 being used, there have been several new hotels build and more being built.....with most of the old ones being knocked down, town centre has had several updates with more re-development in progress, still using old stock photo's of the tram area at the Metropole. I don't disagree there are still many issues that were mentioned...but more updates pictures could at least be used from the town centre rather than the stock ones.

Blackpool is not the same as it used to be like in the eighties and nineties, the place is no longer that great seaside resort that it once was, most of all the fun is gone I could name a few places there, the chamber of horrors, Louis Tussauds, toy shops in mass along the sea front, seafood stalls, the old style trams, decent illuminations, even the gonks! also the pleasure beach used to be free to enter!.

As a child, teen, and adult who frequently vacated blackpool, I can honestly confirm that it has indeed gone down bank and lost its once sea side charm. Its tried to do to much to often and lost its sense of authenticity. There is no doubt that the 70s, 80s and 90s were the whole of blackpools heyday.

I have within the last hour, just returned from a long weekend in Blackpool - with my mother and her partner. Both of them have reached a milestone age this year and don't enjoy the health and strength that they once did; and so, whether they make it there again in future probably shouldn't be taken too much for granted... Blackpool has my mum's special place for more than 60 years, you see. She first went there in the very early 1960s with my dad, when they were courting. With just two or three exceptions, our family always took its annual summer holidays there. She went with him many, many times and stayed in Holiday Flats, B&B's, Guest Houses and Hotels, according to how many of us there were and what they could afford at the time. They went there with their only child, when I was just one year old, right through until my mid-teens! They went there with her late mother, numerous times - and with her younger siblings when they too, were just children. She has returned several times more with them as adults - and with their spouses; then she has been there in widowhood - and three or four times at least, with her present partner. I don't suppose she really thought of it as such, but I guess if she had, she'd have assumed her Blackpool days were now over. Yet - just three weeks ago and while booking for myself I thought how much she'd also like to go - and wondered if she'd be able to face the journey. I found a nice hotel - in Cleveleys, and so, well away from the weekend stag and hen parties, and those too drunk or stoned to remember why they'd gone there - as well that ghetto that is so popular amongst so many of my fellow gay men, but which would still be completely alien to her; and which offered enough on-site and local facilities so that if she found she couldn't walk at all when we got there, she'd still have a reasonable time; I provisionally booked them a room and asked her the million-dollar question... We needed lots of support - particularly as we went by train, but for the most part, the railways did us proud in that respect; and she needed help with almost everything her partner and I could offer. While I met with friends in Cleveleys, the two of them went off to Blackpool on a bus and returned a lot later than I'd thought they would, by tram. Their main grouch was that there was only one disabled toilet available in M&S (both ladies and gents were out of order), the Winter Gardens was closed and if there were public loos in Houndshill Shopping Centre, they certainly couldn't find them; but mercifully, there were no serious emergencies arising from this. Next day, the three of us boarded a tram for Fleetwood and on the advice of one obvious old queen working as a tram conductor, transferred at the end to a No. 1 bus to get to Freeport. Alas, they were disappointed - not by the absence of any shops, but by the absence of the quality shops they'd been to there, six or seven years ago... If only their bus drivers were as helpful as their tram conductors! I mean, he wasn't bad - just not very forthcoming with the information - and not just to us, either - as three passengers hoping to return to the North Euston Hotel were told it didn't go there before going all the way to Blackpool and Starr Gate first - but not told it did stop in the parallel street five minutes into its outward journey... Likewise, we saw Fleetwood Market from the bus, but it didn't stop there; and then alighted at the top end of Albert Square, which was quite near - only, there were no signs pointing towards this supposedly main attraction in town! And we ended up walking much farther than any of us normally manages - and never got there yet. Nor were we the only ones as several others stopped and asked us if we knew the way to Fleetwood Market... And this time, there very-nearly was a serious toilet-related emergency, as we only just made it into Asda in time - having walked around three sides of a circle hoping to find a suitable alternative. By now, poor mum was in a state of near collapse, and, despite her protests, we made the decision to not go there, as we'd already walked more than she or I was really comfortable with. All for lack of information... They travelled with me into Blackpool again on Sunday, and we parted company after half an hour sheltering from rain in the Winter Gardens which was open this time and into which we'd gone looking for a toilet. We had to ask a cleaner where the accessible ones were, but of course their directions were accurate, and we were pleased to know of their existence - for future reference! After we parted company (I went off to meet another friend), they got a tram down to Starr Gate and all the way back up to Cleveleys, which they seemed happy to do, even though the lights were not yet illuminated. (Mum invariably needs to be in bed by 7.30pm, so that was pretty much ruled out too, even though she would have loved to have seen them). I shed a few tears as I returned later via the same route, and after they'd been illuminated - feeling a bit guilty for not letting her see Fleetwood Market for what might have been her final opportunity, as well as for not having video recording equipment that would have at least allowed her to see the lights after the event; but what can you do when the powers that be make such things so difficult? The final word should perhaps go to our friendly tram conductor, who told us that the rain must be the reason that he could freely move up and down the length of the tram and collect all the fares: "Normally you'd hardly be able to breathe at this time, because therer would be so many people crushed together on board...". So why on earth do they only run them every 15 minutes then ??

I remember that my grandparents used to love going to Blackpool during the 70s, and usually returned with a nice win on the bingo lol. Payed their trip there and back from Kent. Can partly understand that people are biased regarding wanting good weather on holiday, and there is no guarantee on the irish sea. Heard once, that a typical blackpool day, was that the sun shone from 9-1500, and then it peed down, so that the people had to spend their time and money on the amusements lol. Times have changed

Well if the council stopped being greedy and stopped painting double yellow lines everywhere perhaps it would attract more tourists less businesses would close down... I used to love going Blackpool when no pay and display on the promenade and back streets it's a dump.wont be going again.. There's still hope for Blackpool

Blackpool has many problems its decline was down to cheap package holidays in to Spain etc. It's always been a depressed area because of the lack of industry. Back in the day during the season people would come to Bpool on holiday and see lots of money exchanging hands and falsely believe the streets were paved with gold. In turn this would attract people who would move here. After a while they'd discover the truth about Blackpool that the streets weren't paved with gold. Furthermore, in recent years councils from the London boroughs started offloading their people onto Blackpool who couldn't afford the rents in London. This in turn added to Bpools problems. I hope now that people finally realise Blackpools streets are not paved with gold!

I really think blackpool is really run down now, I seen blackpool as a kid being a safe place for families to go for a holiday, but now I would not recommend it as a holiday, go for the day but that is is... Its full of drug addicts, alcoholics now and its really put the area down hill and there is litter everywhere you go there.... would say it needs a lot of money spent on it.....

I've lived in Blackpool all of my life. It gets very unfair coverage in the media. Yes it has problems and a lot of poverty but like you said it's very densely populated and seems to attract poor people looking for a better life. I personally feel very lucky to live here, theres loads to do, fresh sea air and mostly friendly and warm people. A lot of your pictures are out of date, Blackpool has had millions invested in it in the last few years and a lot of the dilapidated buildings you have shown are no longer standing

again well said . Yes it has its issues like a lot of other places in the uk. But if you know where to go there are a lot of other things to do as well eg Stanley park , zoo , st Anne’s lytham Cleveleys fleetwood bispham , piers , tower , pleasure beach , shows , events cheap pubs / restaurants / bars etc etc It’s now open till January now with the Christmas area at the front and a new all year round indoor entertainment complex being built at car park near coral island . Most other towns are boring just with a shopping centre and a club and a few bars yet people from them slag Blackpool off . Just like all uk a lot of it depends on the weather of course . And even though as not as much opportunity as in the cities but unlike a lot of other seaside resorts there are still a lot of businesses and retail and business parks around the area so there are still jobs if your willing to work a bit harder you’ll still find work . What other seaside resort has all this ? If it was that bad why does it attract the most tourists every year ?

The street I grew up near (central drive) is nothing but kebab shops, Turkish barbers and cheap cigarette shops. There are no churches left, all of the pubs and clubs are gone. It’s mainly Muslims and criminals from other parts of England dumped in our town by god knows who. The area I live in now is similar they are getting rid of pubs and churches and people are standing for it, that’s the worst thing about it. It’s so sad.

Blackpool is an ideal seaside town for families. Unfortunately many businesses try to extract as much money as they can from day-trippers in the shortest time. Catch-penny arcades will fleeces your children of their pocket-money while providing minimum entertainment. It is well known that fast food outlets get progressively better the further you walk inland.[one fish & chip shop on the promenade actually employs a BOUNCER should you complain about the exorbitant prices] Holidays abroad may be sunnier but the days of low priced flights is a thing of the past. Plus since 9/11 you need a very lengthy wait at the airport so your first and last day of a foreign holiday can be forgotten. I love Blackpool but there is room for improvement.

What you need to think about is Why are all British seaside towns run down and having no money invested since the 1960s. Also yes a day trips and a Gay center and it is full of drug users. That keeps the customers away. The government can close The British Bike industry, car industry, shipbuilding, and working Citys like Liverpool and Manchester. So why close Seaside towns? It's to do with OIl. Every year more and more cars and trucks are packing the UK. roads. Take a barrel of oil. You get Petrol, Diesel, plastics, tarmac, crude oil, and loads of surplus aviation fuel. To get rid of cheap unwanted jet fuel. Start a Budget airline and fly to a Spanish seaside resort and enjoy an English holiday. Dont mention Skin cancer or Billions £. into Spains ecomany. Oil is a time machine and we must use it up as fast as possible to move on.

Then there’s the tower ,3 piers, pleasure beach , shows , events eg fireworks championships , arcades, beach, vintage trams ,some cosy b and b’s , casinos, novelty shops, tons of cheap lovely pubs / cafes / restaurants / bars etc etc it goes on and on . I even got a ferry over to knott end the other day and had a great day shopping at Freeport at knott end . it’s also close to places like Southport, preston and it’s large city centre and market , morcambe, Lancaster , peak and Lake District . It’s now even open till January with the Christmas area at the front and a new all year round indoor large entertainment complex going to be built at car park near coral island . No other seaside resort offers all this. Most other towns are boring just with a shopping centre and a club and a few bars and a small park yet people from them slag Blackpool off - I stayed in a few for a few days and was bored. Just like all uk a lot of it depends on the weather of course . And even though not as much employment opportunities as in the cities but unlike a lot of other seaside resorts there are still a lot of businesses and retail and some business parks around the area so there are still jobs if your willing to work a bit harder to find them but less than in a city but you’ll still find work but there aren’t as many professional / graduate jobs admittedly but they are still there. What other seaside resort has all this ? Personally I like living here - only thing that really gets me down about the place are the druggies, beggars (who keep asking tourists for money ) and some rundown looking shabby areas especially just behind the front (which is not fully representative of all Blackpool as when you go inwards it looks like any other area in uk and there are some beautiful places and houses such as round Stanley park area ) but the weather can also be windy and bad at times even though Blackpool gets more brighter days that most of the other parts of Lancashire but one big thing is it can go pretty dead out of season what with the winter weather and can be bad especially difficult for the seasonally employed it can be hard to find work . But on the plus side cost of living and houses are lower here than most of uk . If it was as bad as some people make out why is it the most visited holiday resort in the uk ? So I think overall the pros outnumber the cons but of course it depends upon wether you want to concentrate on the positive or negative aspects .

Big business people have constantly come in Blackpool bought up shops and pubs...take their money out of the town then leave ..leaving closed down shops to go to rack and ruin...I was born there in the 1960s ...stayed there till 2011.. it saddens me that the constant councils have tried and failed to bring blackpool in the 21st century...the big casino was given to Manchester some 20 years ago..Blackpool was a family resort...now it’s changed to stag and hen parties...it was a gay capital..but to be fair basil rathbone did bring money into the town..the tower and pleasure beach try to keep the revenue turning...but failures have followed...the influx of people out of town has not been addressed...ie..housing..schools..doctors...health clinics...roads..and could do with another hospital..this would take millions if not a few billion to solve..come on help Blackpool don’t put it down...

I live near Blackpool. It could be a amazing place. Basically need to knock down old hotels and bed n breakfasts then rebuild new modern hotels. It gets called ' Vegas of the north ' so needs to start building huge casinos like it was meant to before Manchester got it. The money it would bring in would change to town within a year. Lovely prom, great transport including a airport, huge beaches some amazing ( st Anne's dunes ) , winter gardens has huge events all year. Not far from places like lake District and beautiful countryside. It's classed as a ' shit hole ' but it's always busy. It's could be a diamond in the rough and eventually a nice, wealthy place to live. Be a long, long time though
