Not to mention leaks weren’t nearly as prevalent back then, so the announcement would’ve taken them completely off guard. I’ll bet they had no idea Smash was going to be anything more than a one-off franchise.

However, Sonic was the point where people were like, "Could Mega Man be in it? Cloud? Banjo & Kazooie? GOKU?!?" (I mean, I'm kidding on that last one, but you get the idea.) Almost every third party was fair game at that point.

You know what I find really crazy? Didn't Sakurai opt for the character trailers because he noticed that people were sharing Brawl's subspace emissary cutscenes online? Think about it. The reason why he didn't really make any game specific cutscenes after Brawl (i.e. a story mode similar to subspace) was because he thought that "they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game" if people just saw them out of context. So instead of using a cinematic budget inside the game itself, he used it to deliver us these well-crafted trailers directly through the internet. He utilized the same medium that fans did... to give those same fans unique clips to get them excited for newcomers.

Smash has gone from Nintendo’s novel crossover fighting game has transformed into something that celebrates some of the best and most monumental things in all of gaming. Who knows what the next Smash Bros. will hold? It could be essentially Ultimate with some more content or they could take a complete left turn and take it to a new direction. Either way, let’s appreciate this game and its roster while we still have it. We might never get to experience a crossover of this capacity ever again. Thank you Mr. Sakurai for truly pouring your heart and soul into every aspect of this incredible game and this entire series. It truly is something special.

@@gavanscommandblock I think in order to keep all existing characters (keeping 3rd parties in mind) they would either have to jump through the same legal hoops Sakurai had to when making the game, or keep the same copyright. Im not sure how tied to the engine the copyright is, or if its the trademarked name of the game (pun not intended). Im not a video game buisness expert, but I believe they wouldn't be able to make a new game and still keep every 3rd party addition they've made. Maybe a SSB Ultimate Definitive Edition would be the way to go.

I was 14, but had no idea what was going on because, despite playing some games at my friends' houses as a kid, I'd never owned my own console until that point (I played old arcade/Atari games on my dad's Commodore 64, and later had a couple of PC games like TIE Fighter and Chex Quest, but didn't really know much beyond them). SSB64 was the first console game I ever owned, and since then I've been a fan of Nintendo.

@@andywap3 Well he didn’t make TWEWY he just designed the characters and was executive producer. The devs of Einhander worked on the gummi ship levels for KH3, so they thought they’d put in a little Easter egg. It’s the same reason Sora’s design is heavily based on Sion and Pence’s shirt references the Bouncer, because Nomura designed characters for that game. Even though I was 17 when they revealed Smash 4 E3 2013 was the first Nintendo Direct I ever watched. All of these bring back so many memories. 47:15 I still rememver how shocked and devastated I was over Bayonetta being the winner. I was so sure that King K Rool was gonna get in. 1:00:56 I wasn't really paying attention to this one until I heard Gangplank Galleon and started freaking out.

Man what a trip. I remember being 9 years old and seeing the N64 commercial on TV and being super hyped. Then seeing Ganondorf in Melee, finally unlocking Mewtwo, and fighting Giga Bowser and Crazy Hand for the first time were all epic. In Brawl seeing Link get a Twilight Princess aesthetic update, Diddy Kong's addition, Charizard, Wolf, custom stages, Sonic and Snake's addition, playing through the Subspace Emissary, winning against Tabuu on intense the first time...all epic memories. On WiiU and 3DS getting rid of the stupid trip mechanism, Cloud and Mega Man, that sick theme song, being the first handheld version, Ryu, heck even Duck Hunt, all fun. Then Ultimate making sure to add every existing character and stage so far, World of Light, the soundtrack y'all, Ridley and King K Rool were unexpected additions for me, I'd been saying that Banjo and Kazooie should be in a Smash game since melee so that was a fun surprise, honestly the MOST unexpected reveal for me that came completely out of left field was Sephiroth. When One Winged Angel started playing I got goosebumps. Sora is a great end to the DLC, but he was the most requested character and there were so many rumors and "leaks" that I wasn't just shocked to see him added. Happy? Yes. Surprised? Not as much as some of the other additions. This has been a helluva ride and I can't wait to see what the future holds as well.

One game that has been an integral part of a large amount of people's lifetime, truly a gem and a master piece. We have had it all, joy, sadness, drama and an enormous amount of happiness from it all. Watching all of these reminds me of the pure rollercoaster of emotions I felt during some of the reveals. And Sora as the last trailer was just perfect, even if you hate the character of you were expecting someone else, you can deny how emotional it feels, it was just perfect. Hands down to Sakurai and lots of thanks for making what can be considered one of the greatest games and a true celebration of gaming history.

Absolutely legendary, this game series. From the trailers to the games themselves. While certainly many other games can provide excitement with their trailers, Smash is probably one of, if not the absolute best at it. What started as a sort of nintendo hall of fame has grown to be such a massive crossover and celebration of gaming.

What an insane and magical wild ride this has been! Smash was one of my favorite video game franchises of all time as a kid and it still is one of my favorites to this day. My favorite reveals over the course of this amazing series are: 1. King K. Rool - When he was revealed for the base roster of Ultimate before the game's release, my hype levels shot up exponentially and went right over the moon. I was in complete shock and awe, and was left absolutely speechless. 2. Sonic the Hedgehog (Brawl) - I was in my Junior year of high school when this reveal happened back on the 10th of this month (October) almost 14 years ago. I was in my Visual Communications class that day, and when I went on to the official website for Brawl (The Smash Bros. Dojo), the daily headline was about "Sonic the Hedgehog Joining the Brawl!", I was absolutely SHOCKED and excited at the same time. 3. Sora - All I can I say is... Wow. What a way to end Smash. It was simply beautiful, magical, and magnificent all at once. 4. Mewtwo (Sm4sh) - I was a bit sad that he wasn't in Brawl, but I was fine with it regardless. Sonic's reveal and being in Smash more than made up for it. When he was announced as DLC for Sm4sh, I was giddy with excitement and hype, especially because I'm a massive fan of Pokémon. Since I was a member of Club Nintendo at that time when it was a thing, I got him in the duo of games for free, as well as the soundtrack. 5. Greninja (Sm4sh) / Incineroar - Both of these were awesome and hype-inducing for me due to my immense love of Pokémon that I've had since I was a kid.

I noticed something with Both Brawl and Ultimate, they both start the end with everyone turning into trophies in some way. Brawl with Tabuu using its Statue ray and Ultimate with the fire dying out. Then everyone gets brought back from the brink of losing everything with the most unlikely individual, Sonic for Brawl and Sora for Ultimate (with the assistance of Mario for grabbing the last ember from the flame.) I never got to see anything concerning brawl, I don't think anyone did and the moment we all thought we were going to lose everyone yet again from Tabuu's beam there goes sonic saving everyone from the brink. It was a tear jerking moment then and it was also a tear jerking moment when on October 5th 2021, myself and what could be hundreds of people all saw the Kingdom Key open up a keyhole to let everyone's favorite Keyblade user come out. Let your heart be your guiding key Oct 18th everyone.
