How has Indian cinema depicted the Indian homemaker, and how does 'English Vinglish' make us question our assumptions about her?
'Recasting' is The Swaddle’s video series where we look at characters who defy the stereotypes of Indian cinema.

its more difficult than most paying jobs imo. Being a homemaker is a 24/7 365 job. With too many emotional sacrifices as well. You aren't doing shit for yourself, you're doing everything for others..who most of the time don't even give you equal respect.

Its sad how women in most Indian movies are reduced to societal stereotypes without any character development whatsoever. They're either portrayed as *just* a love interest for the macho, man-baby hero or the main conflict, which again, ends up pitting women against each other. That's why we need more movies like this, which finally paints a nuanced female character that supported by other females in the setting. Tbh I hoped Shashi would've left her husband to be with someone who inherently cares for her, maybe like Laurent, who respected her as she *was* and as the person she *became*. Nonetheless, this movie was pure gold

U can’t b a good member of ur family or society unless u know who u r or what ur capable of. This requires individuality. Individual decisions, education, meditation, suffering etc. Usually desi family members r familiar with this concept, it’s just that sometimes they’re not aware. U must keep in mind that desi culture has been destroyed and built back up for almost a thousand years after each invasion and external influences. Constantly and relentlessly. It’s moreover it into something it never truly was. The best thing u can do is go back to those roots and explore the heck out of them. There r many gems dying to b discovered by the regular youth that the ancestors discovered and have been buried by oppression and brainwashing. I promise, u won’t b disappointed. One of the first things I did was explore the etymology of vocabulary and origins of rituals/belief systems. They reveal a lot that has been buried by Mughals and Raj. It helps to shed the false history taught in desi schools. Without proper knowledge of ur cultural/national history u won’t understand left from right, let alone find a path forward. Dharmo rakshati rakshitah!

The movie was released in 2012 and at that time the idea of Shashi divorcing her demeaning husband to go with the French guy might have been too radical for director Gauri Shinde to put on screen. But at least today with movies like Tribhanga we see this progression in the courage of female filmmakers. This little progress is what makes me hopeful that in future we get more radical interpretations from the female character.

Temperamental behaviour can't be deemed as part of personality. All you could do is respect the individual (be it you or your partner), whom you accept as a homemaker or otherwise. For argument's sake, let's say, even if Indian women become homemakers to keep their family together and support them in their endeavours, does it mean, that they don't wish to work or they don't want to enjoy their freedom, no... Then, why are you applauding the sacrifice by those people, instead, respect them for what it is. And if you see someone working even after being married in India, that doesn't mean that they are influenced by Western culture. Instead, they are capable of learning and growing by themselves and they would like to utilise their knowledge in other fields apart from being a homemaker. Also, being selfish is not feminist!! If I'd be from north east India and I would have asked my husband to stay home, it is an acceptable ask. So, all of these are cultural differences and if you are living in India, you must be aware that crossing borders of one city would take you to a different world altogether, in terms of cuisine to lifestyle. But after 9 years of my marriage, my in laws are still so interfering in my married life. On top of that, my husband too agrees in almost everything my in laws says. For an instance, I needed to go to my parent's house for few days, as i have not met them since last summers. But my in laws asked my husband not to send me to my parent's house, and too pressurise me, so that I must obey my husband. I should not choose what I want and should obey to anything that my husband says to me... On the other hand, my husband wants me to call my in laws regularly and ask them about my well being. I have been put in such a dilemna, that till when I must live this chaotic life. Why should I not take my own decisions. Why I always have to listen to my husband, or indirectly said, to my in laws. Why can't i take a stand in front my husband or in laws that I'm not a servant to u, so I have to obey u in every manner... Everytime I only asked just to raise my kids, serve my husband and handle the household chores. I can not present my decisions in any matter. I can't speak my mind in front of my in laws. It's so suffocating sometimes

If you ask for a divorce now, then will your parents support you? If they do then go ahead and get divorced, your husband will be forced to pay alimony because he has made you completely financially dependent. You can use your alimony money for starting a business.

Problem of any women centric movies is that their climax is too redical .Because of this most of the indian women do not connect with them. They said 'ye to sirf filmo me hi hota hai'.I hope in future this problem is solved with time.Indian serial are also too radical but their environment and situation are relatable that's why Indian serial are way more popular than Indian cinema.

It's her husband's responsibility that he should've helped her wife to be her best and should've asked her to continue her studies and follow her passion Now many men don't do that because they fear once she gets a degree she will earn and be self-dependent and I wouldn't be taming her anymore She might have affairs with someone No matter how much he flirts with other girls but they can't tolerate their wives doing the same His wife talking to a male friend can make him question her relationship with her. But if he flirts with office colleagues she has no right. This was the typical mentality of an Indian man back then Although times have changed and Men are more supportive of their wives

1:31 when I was younger I was exactly like shashi's daughter. I used to put my mother down and question her authority because she is not English educated. I was embarrassed of taking my mother to my PTA meetings because she can't English. Later I grew up and realised that it is not her fault that she can't speak English, it isn't her fault that she was never given the chance to do so. And being able to speak English is not necessarily a mark of being intelligent. Now I'm much more educated and understand the struggles of my mother and respect her.
