I did this with a friend I made in PT school! Over a period of like 1.5 years I fully indoctrinated her into the Swiftie world. I had her listen to every album, watch every music video, watch every tour movie with me, and filled her in on all the context of her life and career. I was so successful in converting her that she actually asked ME if we could have a listening party at midnight when folklore came out.

Zach you never disappoint! Just excellent. Your friend made a very interesting comment that I have never thought of before. About how her label, aka Scott, allowed her to put out those songs knowing there would be backlash eventually. I do think Tay knew what she was doing. I also think she was a teenager and as smart as she is, let’s face it she’s pretty smart, she probably knew but as a teenager not knowing the business completely yet, I don’t think she knew the backlash would be so fierce, from the media (IMO), would include 10’s of millions of people hating her, and that it would last the rest of her career. I’m not convinced she knew that was going to happen. But Scott, having the experience he had, most definitely knew yet, as Maya pointed out, allowed this to happen. It was making him money. Like she always did. And as long as the money was flowing, he didn’t care the affect it would eventually have on her, IMO something a teenager does not fully understand. Maya: wise beyond her years. Snaps.

It's actually hilarious to me that more people do not realise that her country girl aesthetic is an industry cosplay or that her parents are quite well to do and bought a stake in her label. She's definitely not the underdog she always complains of being. But I recognise the hustle. At least she has the talent to actually back it up.

I also think people need to understand the difference between people rising to fame from middle/upper middle class families and working class. I think a lot of times people complain that the artist is acting like they were living in poverty. Also, the stake thing: i agree that they had enough to have 3% stake in it but please don’t forget that BMR was literate incorporated then so obviously it was pennies compared to what it is now.

IMO she was an underdog in her industry due to the general attitude toward all things teenage-girl adjacent at the time. Anyone who lived through how teenage girls/ anything teenage-girl adjacent was written off and mocked at the time knows how that was. Having upper middle class parents just made her more of a target. No one believed that she was pulling her weight anywhere. In comparison to a male solo artist with 20 co-writers a track, who didn't play any instruments, she was the one received so much mockery, accusations of lying about her background, and constant comments about not being able to even write/play guitar. The media and general commentary at the time was "she's ruining the music industry", "this isn't real music", "country- Brittany Spears, how sad her fans actually believe she writes her own music and actually knows how to play a guitar." It was very misogynistic criticism. (Reminds me of the Rebecka Black chaos.) Maybe I'm just misinterpreting this, and the point is- her parents were upper middle class. I mean just saying, "I convinced my parents to move to TN" (one of her old daytime talk show stories) put her ahead of 99.99% of girls her age at the time. In life- financially- she was not an underdog, no. But I also don't think she was handed/bought a career. Maybe I missed something. People get called underdogs in different meanings and different contexts all the time. Just my interpretation.

The first rule of TS music for me is don't judge based on the singles. I was listening to FM country radio when they were playing the singles ad nauseam. I didn't buy an album until I heard her perform Back to December on some award show. Once I heard the full album I was in. Thank goodness the gatekeeping of radio singles are becoming less relevant with streaming making non-singles easier to access.

I didn't realize that Joni Mitchell's Blue Inspired Red, but it makes so much sense. Joni is my favorite singer/songwriter/instrumentalist and was so underrated during her reign. I think she is finally getting the respect she deserves. I have often seen a lot of similarities between the two from how they look to their songwriting style. Taylor is obviously more pop and mainstream, but the more I discover her the more I see an undercover Joni Mitchell. I can see why she'd question the hype over all too well, when it's Taylor who has written and come out with an obscene amount of songs and many of those being very popular, to claim one song as her best song is a big claim and anything after being told that is going to be underwhelming, and it's also not like a bop like love story or shake it off or any of those more fun songs. Personally I absolutely think it deserves the hype, it's beautiful and the lyrics are so sad and powerful, and a 10 minute version for a song shouldn't be enjoyable and yet I froth every second of it 😂 it's also probably a song to get into on your own perhaps given how long and sad it is
