The word "gold digger" conjures images of a young, beautiful woman using her feminine wiles to seduce a rich, older man, hoping to reap the rewards of a divorce settlement or inheritance. Gold diggers onscreen are regarded as predators. They’re derided as underhanded-if they’re not being dismissed as spoiled and ditzy. But from a certain point of view, the gold digger can appear savvy and shrewd-and sometimes, they can even be heroes. Here’s our Take on how the Gold Digger Trope has evolved from hero to villain to back again, and what her portrayal says about our society’s own love affair with money.

Please do a overprotective dad trope Edit: and i mean dad and daughter relationship, how he wants his female kid/kids to stay pure and untouched by other men, but is cool with his male kids being literal predators to other females Edit 2: overprotective mom would be cool too, she worships her son and bullies his girlfriend or wife (there is no woman good enough for her perfect son)

Two things I've seen an awful lot of IRL: Men who flaunt their money to attract women, then are insecure that the women they attracted are only after their money. Women who flaunt their sexuality, then are hurt or angry the men they attracted are just after the sex. What they have in common is a willful obliviousness to the connection between HOW they attract and WHAT they attract.

I liked your comment and agree that this happens. But I must cite Marilyn's monologue at the end of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes here for a second. It's just as easy to fall in love with a pooran as a rich man. And just like a man wouldn't marry a girl just because she's pretty, gee, it sure does help. But riddle me this: why aren't gorgeous hit ripped hung pretty boys on your comparison? Hmmmmm? How come men that attract using their sexuality aren't in your example of in real life exploitation anxiety? Probably because when a gorgeous man is wanted by a woman, she wants to LOVE him and marry him and make him happy and satisfy him sexually and emotionally. So a want attracting with her beauty and sexuality and then being seen as only that has every right to feel dehumanized. Why do women adore what they are attracted to while men loathe and exploit and despise women the more attracted they are to them? It would be cool if one could wear a sandwich board over a burqa with our IQ scores and how many languages we speak and how many instruments we play and are EQ level and Big 5 personality traits and psychological assssments to attract a mate. But it doesn't work like that, for one thing. For another even if this hypothetical setting would take place, men would absolutely choose the objectify less intelligent women to lie readily control and to feel superior. But also? Both financial security and sexual attraction are incredibly important facets of romantic partnerships! Just like I love cooking and wining and dining a new partner, I would be legitimately hurt if I found out they ONLY got with me for my meals. So a person has every right to be upset for being so dehumanized as to be appreciated ONLY for one attractive trait instead of as a human that contains multitudes. But even when a woman wants a man JUST FOR MONEY... She wants to give him marriage. Sex. Companionship. Arm candy. A wife. Children. Housework. Emotional labor, etc for that money. That's more than anyone gets from anyone ever. When men use women for sex, they literally just use them as an object and don't even give the woman any sexual pleasure. So it's a false equivalency to suggest both types of exploitations are the same. But I agree with you that the willful ignorance exists. But if a man attracts a woman with money, he gets to control exactly what they do. He has plenty of time to show his personality. Or even his sexual prowess! It SHOULD be the same when a woman attracts with her looks or sexuality.... But somehow we are trained to despise what arouses us.

I think there is also aspect of people being like "thats not romantic" or "that isn't true love! Marriage and relationships should be about love!". Though honestly, people can be very hypocritical regarding what they believe to be love or romantic :p Plus people have different ideas about love or romance anyway. For some reason most people don't seem to consider having conversation about your mutual future goals, plans and expectations for relationship before you start dating so you can avoid misunderstandings and disagreements down the line that could have been avoided in first place with good communication to be "romantic". (on sidenote, also getting annoyed of romantic comedies where one in pair is suddenly like "we have been dating for years but we never discussed before that one of us is uncomfortable with idea of marriage or having children". Why does all romance media have to be about drama and communication issues?)

Sugar babies, trophy wives, and gold diggers are doing the same thing as the housewife. They would make housewifery does illegal to if men didn't need her uterus, emotional support, and home-making skills so badly. How could you not even mention that some women--like myself--marry charismatic older men they ACTUALLY LOVE and then have to deal with being regarded with suspicion and derision from society and even their husband's relations. I'm a widow now, struggling economically, but I'll never forget the pain this trope caused--and the strain on my marriage. The irony is I'm one of those rare people who will date a broke partner. I don't admire or seek wealth. Survival is necessary. Comfort is nice. But my love will never be for sale. And I'm suspicious of excess wealth. Good essay otherwise

Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) from Downton Abbey is a self acknowledged male gold digger. His family was broke, so he went to the United States to find and marry a wealthy heiress. In the show they call them _Adventurers_ or _Fortune Seekers_ though. Ralph Fienne’s character (Gustave) in the The Grand Budapest Hotel is another one. They both are different personalities though - Crawley genuinely loves his wife... Gustave seems indifferent about the women he manipulates, he seems to care somewhat about them - but the money is the principle objective to him.

When she got him she began an affair with another man, one who is also a gold digger that married a rich older woman. She didn't end up working at a perfume counter she started off working at one. There is another character in that movie played by Paulette Goddard who could also be called a gold digger but she is played sympathetically.

I tend to despise the gold digger women/men because they are willing to put themselves beneath a man/woman to get what they want. It's exactly the opposite of how I was raised. Instead of using their talent, skills, mind, or determination to get their money, they sell themselves out to get the cash. Sounds like prostituting (to me) but instead in a more legal and "dignified". The villain gold digger is willing to marry the man and abuse the step kids to get the cash of all to themselves. If you've met one or had one as a stepmother/stepfather you tend to hate the gold diggers just a bit more.

I think this is why I don’t mind that group in China who pooled together to share resources to take pics. Like, yes it’s manipulative if you’re trying to grab a rich guy FOR his money and stupid just for the gram. But I thought... why can people who’ve worked for it be applauded and envied for it, why can’t they do it? Work smarter not harder right? It’s not my type of thing but why bag a fake bag (which is fine too tbh) when you can share one? Same thing as renting a car in some ways. If they have enough disposable income and not going broke from it and it doesn’t make them feel terrible (hurt their self esteem) who does it hurt? Edit: I know some people will say but they didn’t earn the money themselves. And what massively rich person does? It’s built on others backs - that’s capitalism. They’ve changed the way it works and people are mad.

Titanic subverts this trope to a point. Firstly the Gold-digger is Rose's mother not Rose herself, secondly the would-be fiancee, Cal Hockley, wants to share his wealth with Rose. Rose by contrast is uninterested in wealth and wants no part of her arranged marriage with Cal so she attempts to commit suicide only to be saved by a penniless artist Jack Dawson. The older Rose effectively gives up her wealth by throwing the blue diamond she had into the ocean. Oliver! has a different type of gold-digger in the form of the fence Fagin. He grooms little boys into becoming pickpockets and tries to one-up one of his most most successful proteges Bill Sikes by paying him less than what the stolen goods are worth. In both movies, the gold-digger loses the wealth at the end. In the former Rose's mother Ruth believes her daughter is dead and is left penniless after the arranged marriage plans failed, in the latter, Fagin loses his treasure hoard in some sinking mud as he and his boys run like fugitives from the police who are chasing Bill Sikes.

I think it’s because the homemaker sort of does depend on a good husband to mother. The husband has to have the same goal of parenting and being a good husband and father, which society no longer champions in men. It’s not exactly a balanced approach since society really doesn’t get that keeping a home, being a wife and managing a child is a lot of work. Especially since the women that do this seldom have less than two kids, they usually have more. It also makes it really difficult depending on the industry for a man to take time off to recover and rest or most men seldom do more than just work. Trust me I grew up in this system. Most housewives end up extremely unhappy as more often than not, the husband eventually gets bored and wants a different vibe. The housewives end up in trouble since they don’t have career experience or connections since they put all their eggs in one basket.

How do you afford to become a lawyer if you can't afford law school and the monthly loans you are going to accrue, or a doctor with daily tests averaging $100-$300 each, certifications or finding the time to work to attend lectures, do homework , have clinic hours etc. I feel like you don't understand that a majority of people who are going to become lawyers or doctors usually have extremely close relations with their parents allowing them to have access to more living and monetary resources. I myself wanted to become a doctor but I realized I wouldn't be able to financially support myself throughout that time and my mom wouldn't either. It's not that black and white and if you make "your" money from the exploitation of overseas workers and underpay your workers for the value THEY make you then you didn't "honestly" make your money in my opinion and I don't really see the difference between them and a gold digger ethically

I used to really dislike this trope. I despised the stereotype that always assumed women were extremely shameless and manipulative monsters who intend to exploit other people’s money, more often in regard to men. However, in retrospect, knowing how for a long time women couldn’t get a job or even open a bank account in their own name without the written permission of their husband, I feel more sympathetic and sometimes even proud when I see women earn their coin. It’s interesting to see how we’re more understanding and supportive of this trope currently compared to previous generations before.

Note, that I am not saying she is automatically a villain; just that she shouldn't be praised for being self-interested.

Nah. The girls in Hustlers were absolutely criminals. 😂 But I get the gist of what y’all are saying. However, this trope is definitely not “liberating”. The so-called gold-digger is no more free than she was before because she’s still dependent on that uneven dynamic. She is just being compensated for it, so she’s a lot more stable (even if she’s no less disposable). That system has brought women stability and survival since forever. We only engaged in it because of our limited options. It’s an old way, but it’s not ideal. The fact that it still persists in modern times only speaks to an ugly reality. It’s nothing to feel positively about. Nobody should *have* to use sexual politics to climb the socioeconomic ladder in 2021. At the end of the day, I think women- and men- should get it how they live it as long as both sides know what’s up. 🤷🏽‍♀️ But let’s not glamorize these choices. We can empathize with this lifestyle and put into historical context without spinning it.

@Christopher Reynolds my comment was about the fake pretend dignity people give to drudgery and the pretend disdain they claim to feel towards golddiggers, when it is obviously much more dignified to find someone to love you and take care of you than it is to be exploited for labor to make billions of dollars for the boss. People call gold diggers whores, meanwhile are performing back breaking labor to line the pockets of the boss who is paying for the gold diggers wonderful lifestyle. So dumb.

I think the part of the video taking about sugarbabies and sugardaddies addressed that. Both people are consensually using each other. The old rich men want young beautiful women, and the women want money. I personally think these arrangements are bad because it requires the woman to exploit herself and her body, and the man holds power over her because he knows she is young, dependent, and probably not that financially stable. It's all a mess. I don't think there's anything wrong with guys wanting a beautiful girlfriend or women wanting a boyfriend/husband with lots of money. The problem comes when that's the ONLY reason for the relationship. If he doesn't like anything about the girl except the fact that she's "hot" and eye candy to parade around, he's shallow. And if she can't stand the guy, but is hanging around to get his money and material possessions, she's equally shallow. Yet there are people who are perfectly happy in these kinds of relationships, so what do I know 🤷‍♀️

I would not characterize Ginger from the movie "Casino" as a gold digger. She was supremely greedy and materialistic (just like the male characters), but she was also entirely up front about who she was in her relationship with Ace Rothstein. HE had to convince HER to get married...! Unlike the typical character type, she wasn't trying to trick anybody into getting what she wanted.

You forgot the best gold-digger of them all: Daphne from 1959's "Some Like It Hot". She is relentlessly pursued by the millionaire Osgood Fielding III. At first she tries to escape him, but when he proposes, she decides to marry him and then divorce him and take half of his money. She says she will cite the fact that she is actually a man masquerading as a woman in order to hide from the mob as the grounds for the divorce. Shenanigans ensue (if you haven't seen it, watch it, it's a great movie, Marilyn Monroe's in it, but SPOILERS!) and finally, as Daphne and her friends are sailing off in Osgood's boat, she starts to lists reason why he can't marry her. He replies calmly to all her responses. When she finally reveals that she's a man, Osgood simply says, "Well, nobody's perfect." And you're left with the feeling the marriage may go ahead. How's that for subverting the gold digger trope?!

Was she a gold digger, though? In the book she certainly didn't come from a poor family, and she and Gatsby couldn't marry because he had no prospects at the time. Also, she and Tom had known each other since their teens and there was admittedly a toxic love between the two that made her stick with him. Daisy always struck me as just being a lazy, shallow woman who bent to the will of the strongest man, with no real inner compass of her own.

Why is the girlboss villainsed for exploiting and looking out for herself as she rises to the top while a gold digger is a hero? Both of them use whatever skills to get what they want but in your girlboss trope video she was termed a villain because she does not give back to other women or uplift them. Neither does the gold digger. So then why is the gold digger a hero while the girlboss is a villain?

@@studiostyx7075 That is exactly what I was thinking. Though the trope also appears with the mean popular (typically) girl wanting to date the popular guy because they look good together, even if they have nothing in common.
