And this is something the Americans do to this day. If people really want the service staff in restraunt business to get paid, then blame the the restaurant owners not the people who don't tip them. And if my guess is correct there some states in the US, where staff get mandatory pay from their employers excluding the tips because of some state laws.

The whole tipping thing is so weird to me as a person who has grown up in England, tipping isn't really a thing we do unless they go well out of their way since it is a job at the end of the day and you get paid to do it. Yeah in the US, unfortunately if a normal minimum wage job pays you $9 an hour, you get about $2 an hour as a server at a restaurant. It’s a messed up system but people complain when restaurant workers choose to start working elsewhere because then there is slower service due to short staffing. This is happening a lot now here and I hope one day it causes a change to be more like Europe.
