@TruthSeeker I don't know what you mean by "technically". Japan is officially an empire, and nothing else. And king and emperor are two different things. While there were emperors who were also kings, like the Holy Roman Emperors, or the British monarchs starting from Victoria up to George VI, they are still two distinct titles, with emperor being considered higher than king, at least in theory.
@davidfreeman30835 жыл бұрын
@@Saruman38 That's exactly why ppl say the emperor is technically a king. Actually in Chinese translation the royal and imperial especially in modern usage is pretty much interchangeable. For example everything that starts with 'royal' is translated into 'imperial' almost at all times, however their titles are still 'kings' and 'queens'. Furthermore, royal, king, queen are almost exclusive for monarch, while 'imperial' as an adjective as other meanings. For example, 'imperialism' doesn't imply supporting to have an emperor of any kind, while 'royalism' almost exclusively means promoting a monarchy.

I read somewhere a while ago that Princess Masako, a Harvard grad and fluent in 5 languages, had some type of breakdown years ago. Unable to conceive and rounds of invetro therapy she was only able to produce a girl. This prompted pressure on the family and her sister-in-law eventually gave birth to a boy who now is the hereditary prince, leaving her daughter Aiko in the rubble. Aiko also had to drop out of school due to relentless bullying (apparently a huge problem in Japan). Masako turned down her husbands proposals several times and only accepted with conditions. She should have read the fine print and darted when she had the chance. Wonder if she'll emerge after she is the queen consort. She appears brilliant and needs to step up and be a positive role model to the world.

Thoughts from someone who has lived in Japan for a number of years, speaks Japanese and has done a lot of research on Japanese history and the Imperial Family: 1) it is Emperor Meiji and not Emperor Meihi. 2) Calling Princess Mako a “little monarch” is incorrect. Emperor Akihito is the Monarch of Japan. Therefore you would just call her “a member of the imperial family. 3) Japan’s government needs to update the law on succession for woman. Japan has had female monarchs and some of the greatest monarchs in history have been women. 4) not only that, they need to allow women to marry outside the family and still keep their title. I just don’t see any harm in that. Good example of this is royal families of Europe. 5) the Imperial family needs to adapt with the modern society of Japan. I would love to see like a Twitter and/or Instagram account for the Imperial family so the people of Japan can become closer to them and see the achievements and the good that they do for their country.
@loslopez69976 жыл бұрын
In Japan tradition is a huge thing and it’s very unlikely that the government would do such thing since the Japanese people are not so open to the idea, besides in the European royal families there are up to a hundred possibilities of succession and that’s a problem for the Japanese since the emperor is for them Japan and allowing to extend the succession list would mean that the single dynasty in Japan would die out because of a lot of non royal blood
@juliettelimz99656 жыл бұрын
Although I agree with your points I can see an European bias in your views. It feels like your suggestions are heavily based on how European monarchies work. I think the key thing to remember here is that the Japanese culture and their people’s mentality is quite different to that of European countries, so while for example the twitter thing might be nice in the UK, it would seem very scandalous and too much in Japan (in my opinion as a Japanese person). I still think for us the imperial family has a bit of an almost spiritual level to it, hence the distance between them and the common people, and I don’t think Japanese people really mind that, on the contrary.

The social media suggestion is ridiculous. What point in that? To show off their lavish life and fill the commoners with anger and envy for the royal life ? And Why is everyone have to be on the social media anyway? Shouldn't we just mind our own business without prying into others' lives via Social media ?

Helena B there would only be one social media account for the Imperial Family and like I said before, it would show the achievements and the good that they do for Japan. The Imperial Family is not about lavish lifestyle but is dedicated to serving the people of Japan.

The Talko really should be ashamed of itself for the lack of research they did to put this video together. Many of the "outdated" practices such as Royal princesses must leave their title once they marry a "commoner" and the emperor being unable to abdicate were all part of the post WWII constitution drafted by the victorious allies a.k.a. Americans. Just wiki Japanese imperial history and you'll find it was actually a common practice for emperor's to retire and pass the torch once they reach retirement age. The retired emperors still retain some power and their own court. There were some instances where there were 3 living emperors at the same time. Of course that led to wars when competing emperor factions happened, but that's not the topic. If it seems strange that such a long running dynasty only have 3 male heirs and 8 princesses, it's because also during the constitution drafted post WWII, they limited the line that can claim the throne and many imperial lines were left out. It's not that the monarchy can change by themselves either. All of it requires Japan to change their constitution. Japan actually seriously thought about allowing Princess Mako to inherit. That was until the youngest prince was born and then all discussion ended. In order to abdicate, the Japanese parliament had to do a special amendment for the current emperor to abdicate. It's one time thing so not a permanent change.

Liberalism VS conservatism is not 'culture'. Especially when you talk about big 'culture' like East VS West, or even just regarding a major country like Japan, the level of conservatism vs liberalism, level of social diversity, equality and inclusion, and level of democracy and freedom should be completely independent from the so called 'culture difference'. It's NOT a 'cultural difference' (as they're not 'equal', and I believe that cultures are 'different but equal') when it comes down to, for example how much a society diverges on standards regarding the same issue (such as marriage, family responsibility and career and professionalism) for men and women, or other things such as how much freedom individual should have.

Sometimes you need to change things. The Russian Imperial Family had kept to tradition and that's what ended their monarchy. They couldn't adapt to a femal heir (they had four girls and a sick boy), they had trouble accept a peoples court(the duma) and in the end the people revolted and they were killed. They should keep some traditions and end other traditions. They shouldnt make the same mistake the Russian Imperial Family had.

In the past, there used to be other branches of the imperial family too and also those daimyo and shogun’s clans that were kind of considered the same rank. Some of them did marry their relatives to keep the bloodline pure. However, many branches were demolished after the war to secure financial crisis at that time but they didn’t change the rule so if a princess wants to marry a commoner, she has to give up her status. It was also a bit of a tactic to reduce the number of royals for economy sake since they don’t have to pay taxes

There are a few mistakes here... While yes it is tradition that a male line is followed in theory any one male or woman who can prove to have an uninterrupted bloodline from emperor Jimmu can claim the throne. And it has happen in the time at least six times trough Japanese history. Obviously you can't if you renounce to your royal status, but if you don't you are good as long as you are the oldest in line and there are not males available. There are currently at least 3 people that can claim the throne after emperor Akihito they don't have to change anything for a couple of years... Naruhito is 58 years old if he is healthy and everything goes right he might rule for a 20 years or more. If his brother is alive for when he dies, (53) he might rule for a few years. The young prince has time to create some babies. In case there is not a direct male line one of the princess that has not renounce to their royal status will take the throne..
