VH wouldn't have been the same without him and I think Eddie knew that. If Mike was as bad a player as Eddie said, they wouldn't have kept him in the band when they were looking for record deals. And also, if they got Billy Sheehan in the band, it would have tanked. As good as he is (I for one think his bass tone sucks), having a bass player doing the same things the guitarist can do just doesn't seem right. Back then, it was all about the guitar hero in a band. The bassist was just there to lay down the groove and keep it going. That's why Steve Harris of Iron Maiden is my favorite bass player. He doesn't do anything fancy. He just keeps the song moving.

@@jeffreyrumbold9363 I disagree... Wolfie did the tour of all that old VH material and I can't say that their backing vocals suffered it was Daves vocal that had suffered lol.. Sammy himself says that Ed basically told him what to play and Ed could have easily tracked the bass parts on his own or hired a session player to track the songs and used a hired gun for the live shows... basically most bands do not share royalties on publishing and the actual song writers usually take this credit... MA enjoyed a hell of a ride.. let's face it he was the bass player of the best band in the world.. drank a ton of jack and banged groupies waaaaaaay above his pay grade... I believe like most things Edward, his insecurities haunted him, along with whatever mental illnesses he may have suffered from. When people were not kissing Ed's ass, it was cause for anger I'm afraid. Look at all the people that liked Ed, were in essence father figures but didn't kiss his ring or he was jealous of: Randy Rhoads, Noel, Ted, Dave, Sammy, Rosen, Andrew Bennett, Valerie even...once anyone disagreed with him, he talked crap about or fired or wrote off. Once Sam and Mikey clicked, it wasn't Ed and Sam anymore, it was 2 vs. 2 when crap hit the fan. Ed didn't like that Sam wanted to do other projects but he (Ed) kept doing his own (Rich Wyman and Private Life come to mind). Look at Ed during the time he wrote Mikey off: Does anyone blame MA for not wanting to be around Ed and Alex 24/7? For all the 'no one knows how hard I work', Ed didn't do anything for over a decade except jam on old VH tunes! Mickey did the right thing, he partnered up with Sam who has always given MA his due.

There is nothing more manipulative than people who try to use concepts of ‘mental illness’ as a weaponised tool to discredit others while fraudulently pretending to be more objective than they really are…That is what this guy was doing. I definitely agree on your Alex reference...Although, I did hear Sammy mention recently that Alex and Eddie painstakingly worked out the rhythm parts. They were very creative and unorthodox. There are a lot of tunes wouldn't have had the success without contributions and ideas of the so called non-writers. They didn't just show up and say "What do I play guys?" They created their parts, and likely helped arrange the song. A lot of times, the writers won't let anyone else contribute...too many cooks in the kitchen, or just greed. This is why bands should sort the publishing immediately. Van Halen did, then changed the rules for Michael. This is what I got from the Nole Monk book. I'm going to give it a second read to be sure.

But it only could have been worse if he was with Ted Nugent... and basically wrote the chords and arrangement for Strangelold, Which the bass player did, and got no credit. Then later got credit... But never gets mentioned. It was supposed to be called the Ted Nugent band by the way. When the record came out as Ted Nugent, he actually pretended to be shocked! "I don't believe it! It’s clear as day now all these decades later that Michael Anthony was the only member of the original VH that was relatively secure in himself as a musician and a human being. It’s with hindsight with all the other three’s behaviour, insecurity is what drove them which gave us some amazing music, but was also responsible for addictions(drugs, alcohol, having their ego stroked) and to behave as horrible human beings towards someone who didn’t share their deficiencies. MA has every right to talk shit about about them but never has, which further reflects on his character.

The original VH always has been and will always be my favorite band. Noel Monk commented in his book “Running with the Devil” that he wished VH would have taken 1-2 year break after 1984 tour. Hoping that some separation and rehab would let them recharge since they had been going non-stop since 1978. Their break up was a combination of to much drugs, alcohol, & ego.

The story as I understand it was that when the band received the very first royalty checks, Michael took it to an investment firm (the story says it was at the local Sears store to show you Mike's investment sophistication). He told the guy there that this was the first check he has received and it may very well be his last. But he didn't want to be stupid with his money and needed professional help. He opened his account and continuously deposited money into it. Lot's of money. He's account did very well and he turned into the richest member of Van Halen when you considered how the others pissed their money away as quickly as the made it. They grew to resent Michael and somehow thought that they we being screwed by him. Insanity. Mickey is doing all right and the others are not broke, but as well off as they should be.

19:35 according to Steve Lukather, Eddie had the tapes sent to him at 5150 so he could overdub a solo. He cut the tape and that ruined the backing track because it couldn’t be synced up after that. So, they kept the solo and had to reconstruct the backing track from the little bit of bleed they could hear in the vocal takes. Quincy worked a long time on those vocal tracks and wanted to keep them. So, they rebuilt the backing track around the solo and vocals. You can find the video on KZbin of him talking about it. Also, the Sunset Sound podcast is gold for Van Halen fans

Reading that in Monk's book and hearing this again still makes my blood boil. Fuck all three of them for this. Did he write music? No but ask any VH fan about the VH signature sound & we all talk about Mike's background vocals, harmonies & stage presence. He's as much a part of their sound and success as David & Eddie. Yeah, I remember that but maybe that eludes to what was mentioned in the doc that Sam said they all had an equal share. Mickey may have indeed lost his royalties to 1984 but once the original VH broke up, with Sam, a new corporation was created and everyone started over with the old signed document becoming null and void to future 'original' VH music. Remember, Ed and Alex were desperate to regroup and their insecurity both personally and professionally were at a 'circle the wagons' mode where they wanted to show new member Sam that everything was "ok" within the band...

@@JoeR203Yes, his vocals made the songs. I also think his bass playing is fantastic. He came from that Tim Bogert school of classic rock bass and anything demanding more attention would have upset the balance of the Van Halen sound. That being said his bass playing on some of those old demos is outstanding. He was definitely tamed down, probably at the request of Ted Templeman on those early albums. EVH used to be my hero. I was one of many obsessed with this band, but the more I hear about EVH, the less I appreciate him. He never stopped minimising everybody else contributions, not just in his own band, but also with other musicians , particularly guitarists. Every interview where he was asked about other guitarists would go like "he's good but......". He had so many people telling him how great he was, I think he still believed it, long after he stopped being great. I just listened to his soloing on the Tim Bogart track mentioned in this video. Awful stuff. Also, his appearance with Simon and Garfunkel at the Bridge Benefit. Dreadful playing. He either had pickled his mind with alcohol at that stage, or maybe his lead playing was just was never that good (blasphemy I know). When ever he would jam with other people in a contex outside of Van Halen, he tried to play minor pentatonic over everything. It's like he doesn't know where to find the major pentatonic or major scale.haha. Even I know how to do that and I'm a drummer. He was amazing in his own band, but he definitely needed them, and they were lucky that they were hugely successful. He wouldn't have made it on his own let's say as a session musician or even a song writer.

FANTASTIC. The sad part about this Michael Anthony made the Van Halen "sound" with his vocals and stage presence. You don't have to write songs to make valuable contributions to the band. Fortunately for Michael, his value to Van Halen was noticed by true fans when Wolfie took over. Over time, his high road strategy has "won" the hearts and minds of Van Halen fans. I witnessed Eddie's sad side first hand at NAMM show 2003? 2004? Peavy built Eddie a beautiful clear jam room for special guests to play his Wolfgang guitars. Eddie showed up looking like a homeless bag lady. He immediately headed up stairs at the Peavy booth. Hours went by and Eddie was way over his time. My good friend who is in a famous band, took me upstairs to find out what the issue was, and the Peavy guy said Eddie is trying to re-negotiate his Peavy deal right here, right now (no pun intended) or he's not going to play. He told us...we're telling Eddie we have no problem re-negotiating, but today isn't the time. A solid 3 hours later, Eddie finally emerged. He held a Wolfgang guitar and talked about taking a more hands on approach to the build quality, he played 10 seconds of Eruption and then proceeded to noodle on the guitar and he left. It was the biggest let down. I'm surprised there wasn't a riot.

The man has never spewed a hateful word towards anyone in VH. As another said, I can see why he and Sammy are so tight. You can tell there is a genuine love and respect between the two of them. Roth got brain damage or something at one point. I remember seeing them a few times in LA and San Diego in the mid 80s and early 90s. Roth was pretty solid when he left the band but he was already slipping and not remembering the words and missing his lines. He went and did his solo stuff and some of it sounded great. I really liked Skyscraper. After his solo career fizzled out he continued to tour. I saw him twice with Haggar. It was Haggar/Roth double bill. It was ridiculous Roth wasn't even singing he was clowning around on the mic thrusting his hips and doing dumb dance moves. He was dressing like Liberace at the time it was weird. Fast forward to when Van Halen was considering having him back but they had that fight backstage at the award show. His voice was kind of working a little but he was just weird. He never sang anything right after he left Van Halen the first time. All of the stuff I've seen with him and the new Van Halen with wolfie is the worst of Dave I've ever seen. He can't sing at all. He has no pitch no rhythm no soul nothing. He almost seems deaf it's really bad. The infamous last performance illustrates this perfectly. Eddie did really well considering his age and his medical issues with a hip replacement and being treated for cancer. Roth was lame and made a complete fool of himself and he humiliated himself and the band. It's not even the original band at that point with Wolfie why use Dave if he can't sing? Are they paying attention? Michael would have done a much better job of being a lead singer.

It is easy to see why the power dynamics of Van Halen were the way they were. The reason we, the listeners, got such a great end result is because of Michael Anthony not pressing his ego as much as the other 3 members. It is amazing the band made as much great art as they did without exploding indefinitely. It is a testament of Eddie's virtuosity that the band had a reprise with Hagar up front. Also, it is a testament of DLR's creative geniusness also by his solo career after Van Halen. Eddie may have been playing to the tabloids a bit by ragging Mike Anthony. Regardless of any reports or creative input by Mike Anthony and Alex Van Halen, they are both world class performers. The proof is in the pudding. The fact we are discussing the band nearly 50 years after it's inception is enough to shout: "Long Live Van Halen!" In any of it's phases Van Halen is the epitome of Rock! Simply put, Van Halen is a great Rock band

Yes..very contradictory...On one hand He turned down millions by not accepting sales points for Beat it but was mad all the while that Mikey was getting money that should've been His ? ..Coke & Alcohol made a nasty Man out of Him by that stage. He also made some very nasty comments in a Guitar World interview bout Randy Rhoads after He died that seemed ludicrous, the interview audio is KZbin.

@@andrewbroughton65 I've always been a bigger Ozzy fan than VH. I was just never big on Roth or Hagar but always liked Eddies playing. I know there is one interview where Eddie comes off as insecure when the interviewer brought up Randy. Eddie goes off on a tangent about Rhoads copying everything he did etc. I recall Ed wanting to get some kind of reaffirmation from the interviewer, and to the guys credit, he told Ed that Rhoads was doing his own thing and the two had different styles. Now if I had to pick between Quiet Riot and VH, I'd definitely go with VH. Once Randy got with Ozzy, his playing really started coming into his own and was a lot different than the more bluesy type of groove rock that Eddie was doing. There were far more other players trying to rip off both guys in the coming years, where most fell flat and just ended up sounding like each other. Randy started to win guitar player polls in the early 80's so maybe EVH felt a bit slighted and saw him as competition. Rhoads always talked highly of Eddies playing but found his personality a bit questionable. This seems to be a common theme

Sparkomatic was not high end in the least. I remember reading that in his book and laughing. Roth was spot on. If it was Alpine or Pioneer that’s one thing. Sparkomatic was considered cheap stuff even in the 80’s. Back then i would have took one as opposed to what I had in my 78’ Monte Carlo (stock FM radio). But VH was on top in 1984. That’s what Roth meant by Marlboro or Levi’s. Mainstream higher quality. Not top notch, but not junk stereo. It was good $ no doubt, but Monk was pretty clueless about Sparkomatic. I think they went out of business by the early 90’s.

Ed's issues with Mike were first made public back in a 1980 "lost interview" where Ed said "At least Dave pulls his weight. Mike does nothing. He's bought a Porsche Carrera off the money he's made off of us. Whatever." To me, Mike's voice is just as much a part of VH as Ed's guitar playing and Alex's unmistakable drum sound, (especially his snare). All three of those components made the VH sound! Another great video! Aa far as Roth and Mike, I do know that theres a story out there about an inebriated Mike going into Dave's dressing room on the 2002 "Sam and Dave" Tour and ripping into him. Exactly what Mike had to say has not been made public, so there's no way of knowing what aggravated him, but I'd just about bet that it was Dave's primadonna attitude over the years

@@sodica81Sorry, I was off on the year. It's 1982 Guitar World with Steve Rosen. Here's an exact quote by EVH regarding Michael: "He doesn't do anything, he has no input whatsoever. Period. But he has remodeled his whole house and bought himself a Turbo Carrera off the money's he's made off of us. Whatever." Another one regarding the bass being "almost non-existent" on the records, as stated by Steven Rosen. EVH's response: "...Ill tell you the honest to God fucking truth- that since day one, I never liked Mike's sound and I could never hear him. I can never hear him when we play. Period."

Michael Anthony is a gentleman in all the extension of the word. The responsible one, the one-woman type, the one that was not keen to drink or use the white powder as the Van Halen brothers did. The great guy, the one you want as a friend. The other was jealous about him, we know that he was not the great composer, we know he did not bring nothing to the table in terms of songwriting but the background vocals were essential in the Van Halen sound and I is totally known that without that there were not going to be the Van Halen we all know and love. You, Michael Anthony deserved better bandmates… Thank God, Sammy arrived to be your real friend.

At 5:15 that piece of synthesizer Ed did live as backdrop to Dave's martial art display was scored as the Wildlife by Ed but didn't it ALSO contain rudimentary elements of what later evolved into 'MINE ALL MINE' on the OU812 album in 1988 during the Sammy era ?

I stumbled into touring with VH in 1982. The cracks were already apparent then, as the three married guys and their wives hung out socially and did things together while Dave partied alone with the crew. VH was 24/7 gig for him, 2 hours + a sound check for the other guys, at least what I saw. (All of them were extremely nice to me, btw. Mike introduced me to his brother and parents, I played cards with his mom in Vegas and was FB friends with his bro. Super nice people. Mike, when we met, offered to get me a beer. I was 19, totally freaking out - a rock star bringing me a drink, wow.) But Noel told me his publisher told him to pick a hero - he couldn’t write sht about all 4 of them. So he obfuscated any incriminating stories about Mike. All the guys in the band were full-on rock stars. There were no angels.

Lukather said the tapes' sync track got erased when Ed did the solo, and Quincy made him and Jeff Porcaro re-record all the tracks. Porcaro made a click track from the ambient bleed on the tape and the had to redo all the tracks from scratch and fly in the vocals. Steve played all the other guitar tracks as well as bass on Beat It. Also I recall Ed bragging in early print interviews about how they all split everything 4 ways. He was not money-wise and I guess later came to resent Michael, sad story and regrettable, Michael was a huge part of their sound it bums me out he was treated so poorly.

The TRAY TABLE device ED patented actually wasn't so much for slide players or lap steel but a way of holding the guitar up horizontally in fixed position so you could use all TEN digits on the fretboard coming OVER THE TOP OF IT ..Like a PIANO ..Ed even composed a piece of music using this technique which took his 2 handed technique even further than all those rock players who were copying him. I think he didn't want it on the record though (because of copycats) so he only used it LIVE on the 1984 tour. The interesting thing is that during 1991 during For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge on the track 'Judgement Day' Ed took this two hands over the top technique and some of the music he had written for it back in 1984 & re-adapted it to play it WITHOUT the use of the tray table. I think his guitar roadie Rudi Leiren built Ed TWO tray tables. One of WOOD and another of transparent PLASTIC....But I don't know what happened to those.

@@andrewbroughton65 I’ve NEVER seen any close up pro shot footage of the tray table device being used…Only still colour and B&W photos of it but There MIGHT be some. Somewhere amid my dvd collection of gigs there was this one show of VH MONTREAL 1984 where the gig was shot from the audience but not very clearly in close which MIGHT have footage of it from a DISTANCE. But he didn’t do it at ALL the 1984 gigs. I think he did it in Chicago Spring 1984 (but I only have that on tape in SOUND ONLY. By the time he Ed was playing the European leg of the 1984 tour like at Donnington UK he had stopped doing it.

@@andrewbroughton65 You can actually see Ed perform the technique without the tray table but just with him with the guitar on his lap while sitting down in TWO different sight and sound interviews in 1985….One at this Kramer guitars interview and one with his wife Valerie while attending this NY Hard Rock Cafe venue to give away one of his axes for charity. But in BOTH cases he was playing the two hands OVER the neck technique UNAMPLIFIED with his fingers on the fretboard on an electric without being plugged in ..Hope this helps.
