Great episode! I read Force Recon Diary 1969 & 1970 multiple times. My dad was battalion reconnaissance in 1970 and it was so cool to see in the book some of the stories he had told me as a kid. Semper Fi

Force Recon was always the pinnacle of Marine bad asses, the Raiders just took it a few steps farther. And yes he is right not just about Recon/Raiders, there is now and has always been a big difference and rivalry between West Coast and East Coast Marines.

I see John Dailey, I click. Of all the special operations guys I have watched, he comes across as the most professional and humble. BTW LOVE the Appleseed t-shirt JACK. I had one of those graphic novels in the 80's. GOOD TASTE!

All very interesting! Just saying as a former Canadian infantryman... U.S. Marines are the closest to how other western armies operate. You know, the British, Canadians, etc. Forget about maritime operations. I'm talking about regular infantry stuff such as section/squad battle drills, platoon battle drills, company battle drills, etc. The U.S. Marines actually do those things very well as opposed to the U.S. regular army or Big Army which doesn't any of that. If you don't know what a section battle drill is then you've obviously never been in the infantry. We Canadian infantryman like section battle drills. We also do patrolling the moment we get into a defensive position. You send out a 4-man patrol, always, every night. It's military doctrine that goes back hundreds of years that's called "keeping in contact with the enemy". And U.S. Marines usually operate in the same way. But Not BIG army. And U.S. Marines actually know how to fire 81mm mortars, for example. Exactly the same way I was taught as a Canadian soldier. One hand, facing backwards, as opposed to the U.S. Army which uses two hands, is all over the place, and is VERY dangerous for either getting your hand sliced or a round in the head. And I worked with U.S. Marines n Norway during the 1980s... So, kudos to the U.S Marines for actually knowing what they're doing!

A lot of that might also have to do with the size of the countries. USA has a massive population, and the Marine Corps is the smallest of the branches, probably similar size, if not even a little bigger, than most other countries entire militaries. So other countries infantry battalions are probably roughly as big as Marine Corps infantry battalions

Interesting that the Polish GROM is mentioned so many times in this interview. I know of the Polish GROM, who they are, what they do, etc. But ALL very interesting in that you don't hear very much about the GROM in terms of actual operations.

@@jadailey I have a great appreciation for the USMC even as a limey, and for me Andy being a “halfbrit” (sounds like halfwit ;-) ) I find it fascinating he was able to serve during such an evolutionary and revolutionary time in the corps. All joking aside I have a huge amount of respect for Andy, his book is fascinating, gripping, heart wrenching and yet he maintains that classical British understated determination. Semper Fi.
