Ive been stealth camping for over a year in a converted box truck. I have learned that it is easier to have a leveling system on my bed and on my hot plate, then it is to level the truck. As soon as you put those blocks under your wheels you are advertising that someone is living inside the truck. I built a sturdy box around my mattress and then use linear actuators to raise and lower the corners to get the bed level. For my hot plate for cooking I just wedge a towel under it to get it level.

I saw a short bus conversion once that had a similar idea. Their bed was in back and suspended by cables. Then they would just adjust the cable lengths to level it. And on top of that this had the added bonus that they would just hoist the whole bed up and out of the way when they weren't using it. Absolute genius.

My stepdad once told me to never park where you can't just pull straight out to leave, mostly because one night I went to emergency room and pulled straight into a parking spot that was headed downhill, during an ice storm, and when I came out, my car was dead, and ice had flowed under the tires. I called him to come give me a jump start, but he couldn't because I was parked with several cars on either side of me with the nose of the car headed down into the fence at the edge of the parking lot...and he couldn't push the car uphill, esp. on ice. We ended up coming back for the car later... Moral of the story is, back into dead end parking spot, for several reasons...

Most people who can live in a storage facility either works there or is a family member of the owners of it. There are several storage facilities I've seen where the manager and his wife would pull in after the office hours, they'd park inside the gate and get lost in the storage halls. Actually they live there as one section of the area is a built in apartment disguised to look like several storage units from the outside. It's also how they keep an eye if a fire ever starts or someone is tresspassing. Someone lives in 'Every storage facility'.

I manage a storage facility and I can’t tell you how many people I have thrown out that are sleeping in their vehicles or in the actual units. Their leases are immediately terminated. Our leases specifically state NO sleeping or cooking on the property. The fire liability is huge and it’s the other tenants that will lose everything because of selfish people and their negligence. I even had a guy that would lock his dog in a unit while he went to work all day, in 100 degree heat. Idiots!!!

💡Also, just a note for anyone who cares: I have a friend who owns a couple of those storage facilities. The storage facilities will 100% know who comes and goes and when, what time, how long you stay etc. If you try to park and stay overnight every day or often. They will know. They know what’s happening on their property and when they discover / figure out that you’re doing what he just did, they will cancel your rental space. Sometimes they go so far as to red flag you so sister locations won’t rent to you. I will also say, sometimes you get a property manager who doesn’t care. They know what you’re doing and as long as you’re not causing a problem or bringing attention to yourself….they don’t care and won’t say anything to you. 😂💝

Hey, I am pleased to find your channel. I have been a detailed builder of many things for years and appreciate your attention to details. I long time friend of mine has made several stealth vehicles conversions. One was a Dodge Caravan but his current live in favorite is a Ford E250 panel van. An interesting point is that he went to a great deal of trouble to install about 6 micro video cameras around the vehicle at very strategic points. He uses a 12 vdc operated video camera multiplex recorder/playback unit and can watch all cameras on 1 LCD monitor (also 12 vdc). The controller has movement detection for all cameras and will enlarge any image that detects pixel changes. So this greatly increases his "situational awareness". Here another one of his ideas. He has athe male end of an extension cord that hangs discreetly behind his rear bumper. When it's available, he plugs into an outdoor electrical outlet and it recharges various battery banks while he lives inside. If he has to start up the van and leave quickly, the cord just detaches when he drives off. He also used super thin solar panels on the roof to recharge during daylight. Hope you guys like his ideas. Everyone keep up the good work and HELP ONE ANOTHER! Cheers from Missouri.

We have 2.5 acres with hens for eggs, a huge garden, and 4 sheep to keep the grass low, and we do meat chickens and pigs every year. We both work full time. It's a lot of work getting everything set up, but once that is done, the daily work is minimal. We process all the meat chickens ourselves. It takes one day and we have enough chicken to last all year. The pigs we have someone do for us. We get to pick how we want the meat done, and we get everything back in labeled packages, just like what you buy at the store. We do a few specialty things like Hawaiian sausage links and Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage links. I can't even eat store bought pork, chicken, or eggs anymore. It tastes weird to me. I'm in Northern California, about 40 miles north of San Francisco, 20 minutes from the beach. Our weather is fantastic, so our garden is year round.

Everyone who says that using leveling blocks was a major blunder, was correct. NOBODY storing a vehicle levels it. It absolutely screams "person living in this allegedly-stored vehicle, at least intermittently". Everyone who says that cooking there was a major blunder, was also correct. Think of where the word nosey comes from. You could have completed the trifecta by leaving a row of 28oz PowerAde bottles full of pee lined up as a fence around the truck. Overall a very ill-conceived plan, basically doing something to violate a storage lease you presumably need/value. My deceased friend Glenn Campbell (the Area 51 researcher, not the singer) was the master of using self storage locations as a home base. Early on, he learned the lesson "Never sleep, camp, cook, do anything out of the ordinary, or spend the night anywhere that you actually store your stuff or care about keeping your space." In your case, that means pulling this trick at a storage place completely unrelated to the one where you want to normally store your truck. When they caught him (in a unit, but the idea applies to a stored vehicle also) they canceled ALL of his contracts for storage units and banned him from all their locations, permanently. So, he ended up having to move everything he owned to a different storage place with different ownership. Then he had to rent another unit in yet another place with different ownership from either of those. Then, if he got caught sleeping on the property and they canceled him, his stuff was still perfectly fine. He just needed to walk to yet another place/owner and rent a unit. His "base of operations" was Las Vegas, so there was no shortage of places to rent a unit in anytime he got caught. I had the honor of buying him a buffet lunch at Orleans, then dropping him off at his "base of operations", a storage place near his pre-divorce house, but kept as an "undisclosed location" until he trusted you. The one thing you did well, was figuring out the space was pretty sheltered from cameras. I once stealth-slept in a casino parking lot one or two weekend nights per week, for years, when hotel rates there were astronomical. I figured out which 6 spaces were most sheltered from their multitude of cameras and lights, and which one of those was best for drawing no attention for other reasons. It had to be a space which made sense to park in when the garage was almost empty, or choosing it all the time (and then having an oddball walk to the elevators from a seemingly lousy space with no good reason to choose it) might raise suspicion. I finally got a knock from security a couple of weeks before the casino got shut down for the pandemic. Pretty good timing to not get caught until 2 weeks before I gave up being a professional poker player. And it wasn't a big deal. I just had to leave or go inside the casino, and know they'd be more likely to catch me sleeping in the car from then on. Don't assume that the storage company contacted you just to get your registration info. It may or may not have been a shot across your bow, with them deciding to see if you repeat the sleepover. If they can solve the problem without having to confront and embarrass you, that is a good business decision. They can escalate if you don't get the hint. Not everything which seems to be a coincidence, is a coincidence. It won't be a coincidence if you do it again, and a week later a camera is pointed right at your space. Or if you do it again and they boot you out. Decide how much you value the space, and figure out a Plan B, C, and D if you choose to continue the experiment.

I have a masters degree I want to complete in Toronto and I'm not too keen on paying $3k a month for rent (especially since I haven't paid rent in years and own a mortgage-free house). I often thought about camping out in a storage facility and haven't heard anyone else talking about it. So thanks for sharing your experience. I don't think they'd care as long as you're paying the money to them. Another way around it (i.e., not paying) is to camp out in their parking lot overnight and when they come in in the morning (if you haven't managed to leave before that time), simply say you were there to inquire what the price of a parking space inside was. The result is that you get a free night sleep out of it. Of course, you couldn't do this at the same place more than once but I've heard from other channels that you really shouldn't do that anyway (i.e., multiple nights in one location).

i would love to buy one of these box trucks. i saw many videos of campers but this one is my number one choice. the bed addition towards the wall as a couch and table is perfection.
@tdhawk1675 ай бұрын
I think that call wouldve gone differently if they hadnt seen that you were already off the property. Parking lots at businesses and hotels are much better places to stealth in your box truck...and bonus of being free! Have fun w it!

The storage place we rented tracked when you entered and exited by cell number, so they could tell if I was still behind the gate… but I have rented other places less fancy that this would probably work at

Don’t the block defeat the purpose of “stealth”?
@motopolak3 ай бұрын
First off, I think if you sprayed all of them black they wouldn't stand out so much as those yellow ones. But also, I'm going to assume if the average person saw a truck sitting on some blocks like that their first thought would probably be that it's being parked there and being worked on. So I agree it's not 100% stealth but I don't think it would draw too much attention in most situations as long as they were painted a dull color.

Rule # 1 NEVER push down on a burger just leave it. That will do two things, 1st the burger will be juicy like there supposed to be and 2nd you won't fill the uhaul with smoke.

how did you charge the battery that's my issue at storage stealth places - do you rely on solar panels on truck or alternator battery to charge battery before usage top up everyday for night time ?
@AlwaysOnP0int8 ай бұрын
Have you considered adding air bags to the rear? Or both front and rear? That seems like itd be perfect for these box trucks, would allow you to level the truck on almost any surface from the dash, as well as improving the ride. The sound of the electric air compressor might not be very stealth though. Maybe a belt driven York 210 build under the hood? I'd totally do it on that rig

I moved to, built a "hotel-type" room in a storage warehouse, lasted 3 years. Poppa's pad when momma got mad, lasted Jonathan anticipated. Saved enough for house down payment !!! 😅😅😅

Cameras aren't usually monitored 24/7.... they are more likely being recorded and the video will only be reviewed if they an an issue such as a theft or property damage.

While parking at a storage place is not desirable having the option because your home is 100% stealth is. It opens up so many options for cheap living basically anywhere you can park it legally, I don't have an instagram worthy view at the industrial estate Im in but its quiet and secure, close to everything I will ever need and dirt cheap. When this living arrangement ends I will simply find another one eventually and park around the city until I do bringing true peace of mind that most with a house mortgage dont have. I like the term "parallel society" its the kind of thinking required to maintain freedom in our current system. Your murphey bed/desk set up an excellent example of a true no compromise multi use space which is why I did the same thing in a small apartment with a studio nook....Great minds and all.

You should go up to the front gate and use your code and pretend like you left before you hunker down for the night. Some storage facilities check to make sure everyone who has coded in has also coded out. Or, you could try to draft in behind someone going in the gate and avoid entering your code entirely.
@fahqahsowl64984 ай бұрын
Then you'd have to walk up to the front gate in the morning to code back in, so you can code back out when you leave. That's a little tricky
