Its often overlooked that the North was also never truelly conquered. They surrendered knowing they would be able to keep their culture intact. The only time they travel north before Ned they in fact are the strongest remaining faction and claim the Regency before willfully surrendering the throne back to the Targaryens. They arent the only ones to do it but to my knowledge they are the only ones to never be conquered and then to claim a regency only to relinquish it. Edit: I correct myself. I believe the Hightowers were in fact regents and also surrendered their power without a fight.

I'll be frank, even if I root for them as heroes of the setting, it has always been hard to put myself out as a House Stark Fan. This is a House that has lasted for, apparently, thousands of years. This dwarfs all other real-world houses, whose reigns might last centuries if they were really crafty and ruthless. And yet, House Stark was able to be defeated almost entirely by book 3 following the deaths of Eddard and Robb Stark - just two guys. There is almost nothing on family branches, barring the Karstarks & maybe one others, of which there should be hundreds at this point, who could take up the mantle - it is all conveniently left up to the "bastard." By comparison, the Lannisters just ooze dynastic glory and never once faded as a key player throughout the series. What I mean to say is that I look at the current generation and, barring the fully grown Sansa, I don't see anything resembling true ruling stock in the family. Good warriors? Sure. Born leaders? No, at least not by medieval standards.

Should we view it as if it was written by a maester of House Stark? A steward of (a somewhat empty) Winterfell? A maester in the Citadel of Oldtown? Or even a holy brother or septon in the Great Sept of Baelor? And when was this history recorded? After Bran is named King of Westeros? Please accept my comment as it is. Just an observation of fan.
