Good stuff. Question, have you ever done anything on when hitting a short ball do you follow in to the net, or back up to the baseline? The default is to go into the net, but it's not always the right move.

Great video ! I can see a lot of top players and good players on the backhand side use the close stance when the ball is too far and in my opinion (of course it depends what kind of ball you receive and the level) it gives much more power than the open stance. What is your opinion about the close stance on the backhand ? Thank you

one of the best tennis youtubers thanks ashley, can you also do a video on sliding on hard courts
@TheTennisMentor3 ай бұрын
Thanks my friend! To be honest, I don’t advise sliding on hard courts to most. If you ask those that slide on hard courts how they learned they probably wouldn’t be able to tell you as it ‘just happens’ when you’re moving and stopping at extreme speeds. These athletes have trained for many years to be able to move and stop at speed, their ankles are robust and ready for it. If you try to slide before your body is ready, you’re likely to become badly injured. However, if you’re already training at that intensity and speed, then sliding will come quite naturally. Don’t force it!

Spacing is indeed so difficult. It requires you to correctly anticipate where the ball will bounce, and how high and how forward it will jump after the bounce. Since your ideal position (relative to the ball) depends on all those 3 factors, it's really hard. And even when we anticipate that correctly, many of us are clueless about different ideal positions for different balls. I have played many years and I still get myself into the wrong position every single time I play, lol.

Dear Ashley as you said we have to adapt in all drills situations but as usual everyone adapt better to his dominant eye and in my case as lefty one better to do it in neutral stance but depends if you play doubles you have to adapt as well too , always thankful for your videos greets from Mexico 🇲🇽 / E.

With pleasure dear Ashley the best to follow is Patrick Mouratoglou he has plenty of videos in the web , Instagram FB and You tube for this item and by all means it's a fact that you have to placement in a better sense to tracking on the ball with your dominant eye , with myself I made the amendment on this and it's true greetings ! @@TheTennisMentor

I've heard this many times - in stance, to get "behind the ball", like what does that mean - does the foot need to be placed so that if I dont hit the ball it will hit my leg ? Surely that is too close to swing with straight arm during contact or im just not getting the concert right...
@CH-yp5by3 ай бұрын
I think one of the most common footwork mistakes I see playing in comps is when the person serving fails to take a step back after serving only to find a good return landing the ball at their feet!

I’m 17 years old and my footwork kind of lazy so I really need to get back on track if I need to win more L3’s
@CH-yp5by3 ай бұрын
I'm a right handed upper intermediate advanced player with a singe handed back hand and one of the most important shots I have learned is the open stance backhand where you hit off your left foot usually by hopping in the air. You would use for a return on your backhand and for a backhand on the run out wide so you won't have that stance issue. Its hard but if your athletic you can do it!

Those are seriously good points, but very difficult to practice consistently without breaking the bank.
@TheTennisMentor3 ай бұрын
Thanks. I’d say that all of the tips can be practiced for free with a hitting partner. Yes, it would be easier to use a ball machine or hit with a coach, but the real skill is being able to do it when you’re receiving unpredictable shots. 1. Spacing - Whilst warming up, practice hitting some on the fall, some at the peak and some on the rise. 2. Recovery - Beat the hit. Recover before your opponent contacts the ball (easily practiced) 3. Stances - Raise your awareness of your stances during a normal practice. You may not be able to get as many repeatable reps in but you’ll definitely improve through being more aware!

I think your explanation of open stance on single backhand isn’t quite correct. You’re setting up open but essentially you’re hitting in closed stance. Hitting in open is nigh on impossible to generate pace unless you’re Stan.
