Great video. I have friends that are engineers for legacy and trucker MV’s. They purposely pushed out their semi EV’s to appease their investors. They wanted to prove they could do it and if they could before Tesla did, they’d gain prestige. They’re all working on new designs but most don’t think battery powered is the future of trucking. The power grid can’t come close to handle the necessary energy requirements of many cars let alone many semis. Look at Texas! They’re having major issues already. A natural easier solution is in our midst. It may be hydrogen. But I think there’s a simpler solution here. This seems like a fad

I think it is very practical. When I drove over the road my goal was 500 miles a day. The limiting factor was mostly the loading/unloading times, limits on speed, gravity in mountainous areas and the law. Considering you took a 30 to 60 minute break in route to the destination you could easily to do more if the law allowed since you would charge during breaks. The only problem now is missing charging infrastructure at truck stops and parking areas. Plus I would NOT miss the slippery, oily results and smells from diesel.

My favourite semi story. A logging company is desperate to get hold of some semis. Why ? He hauls logs from the top of a mountain to the bottom. When going downhill, the fully loaded truck regenerates all the energy needed to drive back to the top of the mountain. Result is, his fuel is actually free, saving on both fuel, and brake maintenance !

This is already being done at least at one mine where huge electric dump trucks are filled at the top and then put at least as much energy into their batteries on the way down as what they use to drive back to the top while empty. My best guess, having worked for a major school bus manufacturer in the US, on why the other companies are using legacy designs for their electric trucks comes down to tooling and parts procurement. They are already set up to make those parts and chassis systems, so to save money they're retrofitting the electric designs onto legacy platforms.

The tesla semi with its 500 miles of range, is really close to being practical for long haul, and then a sleeper will be needed, and I can't wait to see what design they cone up with! actually it's already quite practical especially for solo truckers, because of regulations that limit truck drivers for driving a maximum of 8 hours, a duration that is almost the same as driving 500 miles, the final task that needs to be completed is to provide a sufficient number of megachargers

My personal opinion on your 2 major questions, design and battery cells: Designing a new cab will take R&D hours (cost increase), production change and construction (new machinery, new training for personnel and time consumption that means cost increase), lowering the production of the current model parts (increasing the already existing part shortage thus increasing the part cost) in a time period that trucking companies already battling with increased costs in fuel and fees. So my guess is the companies are using already existing designs, to actually transition smoother into the new era. Battery cells are a whole different situation. If we take in consideration the time that took the batteries to come to the level they are today, the curve of maximizing current technology to the maximum gain in output is getting to a flat line, so the next best thing (again it's personal opinion) is charging time. From what i have read and watched the 2170 has a higher charging time than the 4680, so in a more compact environment (like a sedan) the 4680 would make a better choice since it has better efficiency from charging stop to the next. In the case of the semi, the choice would be the 2170, since you need longer trips from stop to stop (getting in account the truckers brake times). In conclusions, your video tackles both worlds perfectly since, as you said "they are capitalizing in the space gained by removing the diesel engine" Thank you for this content!

I think the 1MW power architecture may have emerged from first-principals thinking (i.e.: how much inertial energy a loaded truck traveling at 75 MPH naeeds to be captured with regen when the truck does a quick stop). Squeezing maximum regen will extend range. This may also be why they have 3 motors. They need the regen capacity to capture the maximum energy as the truck slows. The benefits of 3x the power of a normal diesel is a performance bonus that Tesla gets from needing to honor Newton's first law as they slow the truck down.

Hate to be the 70th comment, but have to say, the reason all other electric truck manufacturers choose to go with standard design is that they are standard design, they can use the existing supply chain to build their trucks fairly easily with limited capital. This also allows them to deliver their product very quickly to attract more investment and possibly get the quick cash they want if any big car manufacturers decide to buy their company. They are running their company silicon valley style

They could fill the tops of the trailers with solar panels, and have an area at the front of the trailer filled with ultracapacitors, that would always provide extra range. Maybe connect to regen for going down hills or mountains as ultracapacitors charge much quicker than batteries, when ultra capacitors are full then send charge to recharge batteries. The computers could handle charging and recharging.

The electric people are learning more about the trucking industry. But there is some to learn yet. The Cascadia Freightliner is not a long nose tractor.long nose is more what the Peterbilt and Kenworth OTR models are. The short nose tractors are designed to contain the diesel motor and be fairly aerodynamic as possible. It also maximizes handling in tight spots. Where Freightliner has gone through much development to make a tractor as aerodynamic as possible, they can use that already proven and currently under production model as a platform to begin their program of producing an electric tractor. A quick and cost efficient way of getting their start into the EV arena. Once they have a system developed that they are happy with, I would bet you will see a whole new chassis and cab to go with it. Tesla started from scratch, and started early, so a ehole unit needed to be designed and built at once. Ad far as a sleeper berth design for Tesla, that is probably not a very big or current push. Pepsico, Walmart, and other such companies are getting the first EVs, and most will be on dedicated runs amongst company locations. The driver will be returning to the origin location to end the day. And all their locations services by the electrics will have charging stations. But as the electrics become more numerous, and infrastructure becomes more consistent, they will start OTR work and the sleeper berth will become more necessary. The European tractors may remain in their current type design because they are not out in the open stretches running highway speeds such as our American semis do. Aerodynamics are not as crucial for them, where the compact design is. I am glad to see that many EV enthusiasts are beginning to see the concerns of tractor net weigh and distribution and the need to fit truck performance to match the limitations of "hours of service" that drivers have to meet. I am now retired from driving, but would really love to try out one of those Teslas. I started driving when the mirrors were still less than desirable, and always hung out the window when backing. I wonder how that would work when I would be sitting smack dab in the middle of the cab! I am watching with enthusiasm as the times are changing.

I hope that it is using the best Air Brake System... A start lone haul company would set up a relay system... Using this truck in the mountains of a route - switching to standard Diesel Trucks on the flats... Let say from Sacramento California to Eugene Oregon on Interstate 5 was to use the Electric Truck.. From Los Angeles to Sacramento California Eugene Oregon to Seattle Washington... This would speed up the current situation of getting over the mountains - improve business road trip time and lower it's fuel consumption. But it does this at a lower cost - as for fewer electric Trucks would be required up front to have a major change in the bottom line. The same thing for those routes over the Great Divide and other mountains. Then the cross the country - those lines below Below Interstate 40 - like 20 and 10 - not as cold as the ones north of that line... This could provide the charging stations to use Solar Panels and Wind at the Warehouse. Again cutting the fuel pump cost - then the routes in the Northern area could be used if the weather risk of vehicle loss is worth it. That's my view...

Seems like Tesla should be working with state governments to install mega chargers at the various rest stops which these trucks are required to stop at anyway. If they could put maybe ten chargers at each rest area starting in California and working their way north and east we could see them dominate the market. They could even design an attachment that would allow the other vehicles to use their proprietary chargers so that it isn’t seen as a monopoly or unfair business advantage between the state and one vehicle manufacturer. The antitrust laws are important but Tesla could prove its altruistic ideals by allowing other heavy truck manufacturers to utilize their charging stations. If this were to occur then they could manufacture one mega charger design and install them in Europe as well.

The issue is lack of a seat for a 2nd driver for long haul. There should be enough room for a bed (I might be optimistic). If a bed and 2nd seat fit in, drive 300 miles (500km) and charge, then again... This should be able to do 90% of a diesel. Good enough.

Are you simply stating Wh/Kg as though the chemistries are the same in 18650, 2170 & 4680? Because I'm pretty sure they're different in all 3 battery formats. Otherwise your comparison implies it's the size & format that defines an inverse capacity to that which is expected, but chemistry makes the biggest difference.

If the trucking company owns the trailer as well as the Tesla Semi, they could add multiple battery packs to the underside of the trailer frame to give a vastly increased range. Say, an additional 5 battery packs per trailer, giving the driver a potential 3000 mile range, without stopping to recharge. Where this would be of greater benefit, is if there is two drivers doing shifts or where the sole driver could sleep while the self-drive function continues the journey, once the technology to do so has matured. Thus, it may be possible to deliver a cargo from Los Angeles to New York in under 40hrs. With intelligent computer-controlled streamlining in convoy, the Dollar per mile efficiency cost could be further improved. If the intelligent convoy breaking and acceleration system is employed , this could conceivably work for a sole driver to coordinate his sleep time with being one of the central vehicles in the convoy, where the control of the convoy is controlled by the lead vehicle. Then, they can swap places with other trucks in the convoy to allow that driver to sleep to mitigate stopping.

The biggest questions should be how much freight can the Tesla hold without going over the limit, second the range on the sheet it says 300 to 500 miles what will it be we dont know yet. Freight is the biggest issue if a truck weighs in on average 35,000 lbs and max weight is 80,000 lbs then you can hull 45,000 lbs. The normail truck can travel around 2000 miles on feul it caries so that is 4x the distance feuling takes 20 min incl coffee and it can go another 2000 miles. So lets say that the truck charges back to 80% in 20 minutes so i get a 4th of distance so to get to 2000 miles i need at least 4 charges to 80% meaning 4x30 minutes of extra time to travel 2000 miles so thats an extra 2 hours. Then the biggest issue how much freight can it take with it without going over the limits you should be able to calculate the weight of the battery so if you cant take the same as normal trucks transporting gets more expensive if it can only take half of the weight of normal truck you need two Tesla’s to transport the same amount that means the following. Two trucks cost, two drivers, 8x30 minutes to travel 2000 miles its getting expensive and if its less you’re in trouble you cant compete with normal long hull trucking.

How many of you that are commenting are truck drivers? There are many reasons the center driving position will be inconvenient. When backing into a real tight spot or backing out of a tight spot. you have to roll your window down and stick your head out and sometimes open the door and hang a quarter of your body out back up to make sure you have a clear view. Can’t do that if your sitting in the center. And then there’s a little stuff like I like rolling the window down and sticking your arm out to wave somebody down, smoke a cigarette, I know that’s the tiny things of life but it’s what were used to. And why isn’t there room for a second passenger? Yeah, I know I’m nitpicking. But there’s a lot of stuff that I can see that would be inconvenient sitting in the center. Any truckers on here?

i think Tesla will drive the industry for several years. Then - likely drop off. I don't know if they'll make the transition to long-term manufacturer. But the trucks, the cars, the chargers are driving the industry and making other manufacturers pay attention. This is a good thing. Love the semi. The central driving position is not my favorite, but I'm sure some will find it acceptable. We'll see if it sticks, or if they offer to slide it to one side at the driver's discretion (which would be my preference.)

Chicago for example (where I'm at) has 6 nuclear plants (11 reactors total) and a lot of renewable energy but still gets 24% from coal, as coal can accommodate fluctuations it's "necessary". Highly likely unless FSD runs into some large unforeseen problem. Hope not. All vehicles need FSD so we can reduce the >46,000 deaths due to bad drivers in the US alone. That's not even to mention the hundreds of thousands more who are seriously/permanently injured. Globally, there's something like 1.35 million people slaughtered on the road by human drivers. Now multiply that by 10 or more to see how many are seriously injured but survive. It's ridiculous when you really think about what we're doing. Not to mention all the premature deaths and disease we're causing by burning diesel and gasoline and the further destruction caused by drilling our land and ocean bottoms for it.
