I think I got some traditional taste. My top 10 includes the Beatles, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, etc but I have to work Starfish in. The album sounds like it was beamed from space into the middle of the ocean. Edit: Holy crap I just realized the coincidence with my description and the title.

"Reptile" off this album also had a lot of airplay. This song was in the Donnie Darko Halloween party scene when there were only "six hours left''. They played a good two minutes of it.

My first introduction to The Church was back in 1990. I was shopping in a record store and they were playing an album on their overhead system. After listening to 3 songs, I really liked what I was hearing, but didn't recognize the band. So I went to the counter and asked the clerk to tell me what we were listening to. She told me it was The Church's new album "Gold Afternoon Fix". I had never heard of them, but I bought the album and loved it. So of course I had to go and buy their earlier albums also and became a big fan. My next suggestion for you is "Reptile" but a couple other favorites of mine are "Destination", Night Of Lights" and "Metropolis".

Loved everything you had to say about this one. I just wanted to call out what sounds to me like a "melodica" (part keyboard part harmonica) instrument in the bridge section that had an Irish folk feel to it. A little bit reminiscent of the Dropkick Murphys' hit, "I'm Shipping off to Boston" (2005) and the Hooters hit "And We Danced." (1985) That little added touch gives this song a bit of optimism and whimsy with a few major chords amidst what's otherwise an angst-filled flood of Gothic minor chords; and keeps the awe and wonder factor front and center as we collectively stare up at the night sky and ponder the meaning of it all.

This song was amazing when I was a moody 16 year old, which is why it still resonates with me today, 35 years later. It is legit a great track, glad you guys took the time. Oh yeah, and the original Miami Vice series has some shockingly good and memorable episodes. A surprisingly gritty show.

It is interesting you mention the Cure - because it is speculated that The Cure's Lovesong was heavily influenced by this song. Not to mention Robert Smith invited The Church to play at Meltdown (they have a mutual respect - although somehow have never met each other). They are also kinda similar in that both bands make heavy use of the Fender Bass VI.

This song gets better everytime you listen to it...so definitely recommend you do so...it's mesmerizing for me and one of those songs that I NEVER get tired of listening to it...mesmerizing much like The Cure's Fascination Street and in the realm of songs that I never get tired of like Level 42's Something About You.

I've seen THE CHURCH many times live. One time, about 2002, at First Avenue in Minneapolis, this guy noticed me singing along to every song. He came over to me and asked, "Hey, are they going to play any of their hits? My friend here is bored, and unless they start playing their hits, he's leaving!" All I could do is reply, "Well, they'll probably play "Under the Milky Way" later in their set". If you are all in on THE CHURCH, every song is a "hit". My favorite band!

Australian music in the 70's and 80s, wave, was a golden era in English Speaking music history much of the world missed out on - From the 80s, Go-Betweens, Mental As Anything, Mondo Rock, Cold Chisel, Rene Geyer, Eurogliders, Hunter & Collectors, John Farnham, Hoodoo Gurus, and Icehouse just for starters. Great Southern Land from Icehouse is the next step up from this song in a similar mood.

The Church definitely deserves all the praise that they can get. They weren't hugely successful like their Australian counterparts, INXS, (I think the best Aussie Band tied with AC/DC) but The Church has its place in the 80s-90s New Wave, Indie, Goth, Synth Pop music scene

In this same "genre" if you will, of the 80s, you simply MUST review The Plimsouls, "A million miles away" and Modern English "I'll stop the world and melt with you". Mainstays in the clubs and at the parties then. Much like the Cure, and the Church. 👍 As for Miami Vice? Super Cheesey, but probably hilarious to watch now. Well done, as always!! other Church songs that were popular in Australia that you would probably like would be "unguarded moment" and "metropolis". unguarded moment is one of their earlier garage band type songs. metropolis is more jangly jangly guitar and radio friendly pop-ish.
