I have about 9 Joan Armatrading LP's and all are musicianship personified. She is always surrounded by brilliant musicians that help her great music shine. She herself is a fantastic guitarist.

Holy crap, that was great! Amazing piano & bass. Joan Armatrading was well-known here in Australia in the 70s and 80s, but I haven't heard much of her live.

Colorado? Haven't been keeping up. Why CO? Was blessed to see Joan Armatrading at Red Rocks. Wonderful concert. For those who do not know, Red Rocks is just outside Denver.

U2 did a great live album there early in their career. Lots of great shows out there. You’re lucky to have seen her live. I’m glad there’s KZbin vids of her live performances at least, as I was never able to get to one of her shows.

And she was only vocalist ever (except David Bowie of course)who made guest appearance on Queen album. It was on track Don't Lose Your Head from 1986 A Kind Of Magic album

Oh wow. Need to hear that again

I think she may have actually been the only artist aside from Bowie to do a full song, too. I think there were little snippets from other artists, such as the guy who played the flamenco guitar at the start of Innuendo, or their engineer doing little uncredited stuff like handclaps or whatever, but only Joan and David did a full song.

I have always known the name Joan Armatrading, but if pressed I could probably only name one or two of her songs. As a young bloke, this style of music was never on my radar, in fact, it probably still wasn't as recently as five years ago. It is the magic of KZbin that has allowed me greater exposure to world-class artists like Joan. So, thank you Sean, George, Alex and Chris for taking a punt and putting an artist like Joan Armatrading on the channel. If Day One is anything to go by, we are in for a week of music and musicianship of the highest quality. I can't wait to see the whole week unfold.
@sean---the-other-one Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Len. Glad you enjoyed Day 1. Yep, she’s not easily marketable and most people have tended to not look deeper than her singles. I was lucky enough to come across a best of from hee called Track Record soon after it came out and was immediately struck by the depth of her material and it’s unique and quirky, but accessible nature. A mate of mine got us to play one of her deeper cuts in a band I was in and I was sold. Hope you enjoy the mix of songs ahead.

She was Black and a woman who had her own ideas. Record companies and radio often made bad decisions about those who would not fit a mould. I recall hearing about severe stage fright ( or was it fear of flying?) and that probably did not help her financial career. At first. Check out Love and Affection...make ya stand up and sway as if in the thralls of ecstacy.

Well now you know how brilliant Joan is and the musicians she chooses. Show some emotion is one of her best as far as I'm concerned, I love that jazzy style. 😘👌💖 Another lesser known favourite of mine is Friends, but unlike this one, it's more of a wistful, nostalgic, waltzy style. But Joan can do any music style she puts her mind to. I love her! 💜🥰
@sean---the-other-one Жыл бұрын
It’s true. It definitely feels like there’s no genre she couldn’t contribute to if she decided to tackle it, and yet she seems to also have songs that defy easy pigeonholes.

Thanks, mate. Chris is also a fan of hers and he had great suggestions and input, too. Hope you like the choices. I think there’s only one absolute must have in a week like this for Joan. From there it becomes a tough choice as to what gets in and what doesn’t.

Opening with an inappropriate priest joke, back in form! And then Alex insults the artist that you have 5 tracks coming up from. Never get a marketing department. As a fan of funk music, I appreciate the backing track way more than a lot of the recent tracks you guys have done. They are truly a great band. Joan is a wonderfully restrained singer for how emotive she is. It has to be difficult to be a performer for an audience that doesn't give anything back. You can hear it in her voice in the intro. As for the level of talent, I agree. It also shows a wonderful ability to write on Joan Armatrading's part to set all of that up. I give it an 8.8.
@sean---the-other-one Жыл бұрын
8.8 I reckon that’s pretty fair.
