Three virtuoso musicians writing and performing music at the absolute top of their game. It simply doesn’t get better than this. It’s no wonder that Rush received the longest, loudest standing ovation in the history of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when they were finally inducted.

I doubt we will ever see another 3 piece rock group like Rush. They eclipse all other bands by a massive margin in technique, skill, creativity and especially longevity. Natural Science is an absolute classic from the mighty Permanent Waves album from 1980 & was the first album I ever bought. I don't use the term rock gods if I can help it but I'll make an exception for these guys.

The biggest compliment I can give this three musical genuises is that they always had a great time playing despite the complexity in what they are performing on stage. The seem so loose and at ease while playing and the smoothness that they can change between time signatures is sublime.

So very good, they really do epitomise the prog rock feel, with the best musicians playing together. And how fancy having the lyrics scroll up the video, love that! I just saw before this that Les Claypool, a monster on bass himself and huge Rush fan, is touring performing the '77 Rush album A Farewell to Kings. He did a similar thing with Floyds Animals album a few years back and it was awesome. You should try to get tix so you can tell us poor Aussies with no live music how good it is! Great reaction, as ever. 2112 is historically a really important track for the band, but if Alex wants a big technical opus then “Cygnus X-1 Book 2” from Hemispheres is the business, but I don’t know of a live version where they played the whole song through. If you want some of the more accessible tracks, then I would recommend some of their later stuff, like “Far cry”. There’s a degree of maturity in the songs on the Snakes & Arrows album that few bands have matched - some great rock songs in which three middle-aged men write about proper grown-up subjects without needing to strike poses. “Clockwork angels” from their final album is also terrific.

Great version absolutely. What’s funny is every time I see them perform live I always say “that’s them at the height of their powers” regardless of the era but they’re always at the height of their powers aren’t they? Lol. If you’re looking for some more technical prowess, you can check out “Freewill” off the same album, Permanent Waves. It’s actually a radio friendly song that got some play in the day so it’s kind of atypical of their other, longer progier techie tunes... Anyhow, it definitely packs a punch and will give your brain a cramp trying to keep up when all 3 go virtuoso at the same time. Definitely worth a listen, and it’s short enough that you can fit another reaction in. Though you might need time to compose yourselves afterwards!

Awesome reaction to an awesome live version. Neil Peart is the reason I play (attempt to play) drums....he inspired me and countless others I'm sure. I have watched Neil "mount" his drumkit....it was a tight squeeze with a section of hardware that sort of "swung away" like a little door. It is entirely possible that one of those 32 channel mixers is solely dedicated to the drums. 2112 is really cool....many would consider it their masterpiece. On the other hand, Hemispheres is probably what I would consider their "Magnum Opus" track. It has a sound and feel that is very similar to Natural Science.....2112, while proggy, no doubt, has a bit more of a 70"s hard rock vibe. Hemispheres was so difficult to pull off that there are hardly any full "live" versions out there.....it literally made them change directions musically and was the last time they would create a song of that kind of length.

This looks to be from 1997, only weeks before Neil Peart's (pronounced "Peert")) daughter was killed in a motor vehicle accident. It wasn't very long before Rush went on an indefinite hiatus. Back to this concert: two very good shorter songs should be here, "Nobody's Hero" and "Cold Fire." Both will show you a facet of Rush that you may not have heard yet. And the performances here are top drawer.

You mention the amount of equipment/mixing boards they have/use. I either read it or watched a interview piece once that said they’ll set up two entire identical rigs for each one of them in order to ensure if something fails in one set up they’ll have that fail safe to fall back on. So they’re only really using half of what’s there in terms of speakers, amps effects and such. I forget the technical term of something redundancy, but yeah that’s what you call complete, super professional set up.

Rush reached their pinnacle of Progressive playing on Hemispheres. The first side of the album is Cygnus X-1, Book II and that is an amazing continuation of Cygnus X-I from A Farewell to Kings. On the flip side, the instrumental track La Villa Strangiato is a 9+ minute instrumental song that they tried to record in a single take and couldn't pull it off. So it might have out-Rushed, Rush. Anyway, that song might be the pinnacle of the complex playing for Rush. It's amazing. They tend to show off when they perform their instrumental songs, so La Villa Strangiato, YYZ (live in RIO if you haven't done that one), Where's My Thing? Leave That Thing Alone, Malignant Narcissism (short, but good), etc. I know I have given you a long list of Rush tunes to react to in the past and you mention a lot of them in the videos. One not to overlook would be the Analog Kid, especially the live version from the R40 tour in Dallas. A great recording. You guys are mentioning 2112 and it's really good. They finally played the whole suite live in 1997. It's on a album called Different Stages (I'm in the audience for the version they used on the album! One of 25 Rush shows I fortunate enough to go see). If you choose to react to the studio version, watch the comic book tale, but don't try to show the comic book tale because it often gets blocked on KZbin. Oh, and one last thing. Cinema Strangiato! The Necromancer is a longer story &musical piece where Geddy uses diff tones of voice beautifully w Alex Giutar telling the story along from struggle to triumph. Where to start? Animate live. one of Neil's favs. Bastille Day. By Tor, or In The End Live. The Pass many said saved them from very dark place?? Bravado, not a love song but a song about love; Different Strings, Digital Man, Available Light, Workin Them Angels, The Way the Wind Blows, The Garden. It's a feast, where to begin? Up to you. But hope you enjoy. Certainly enjoy watching. One caveat, the lyrics are truely a works of art, and often profound, having you give them a read even just a couple mins, after would greatly enhance your and our enjoyment of the song in its full. Much to the chagrin of the record company, it was their last shot to make a more commercially friendly record. Yeah but using the studio for audio. There is a storybook version to go along with it. Gives you the complete experience because not many people really understand the whole plot from a first listen to the music. It’s an epic tale told through music

@@TheThamesmen Maybe not, like 99% of the bands that originated after them but there are some cases that the creature tops the creator. I believe Rush is one of them, imho ;) Could be a interesting subject for later videos :) Respect for you guys! Keep rockin' Peace!

Closer to the Heart Live 1998 Gonna keep spamming you
I'm making this comment 2 months or 2.5 months after you guys put this video out, but George and Alex please do me this favor: please DO NOT play the entire 2112 piece! It is roughly 22 minutes long, and it was the entire "A" side of the vinyl album 2112 when it came out. Why not? At the risk of being stripped of my Rush fandom, the entire piece is not that good. There, I said it (ok, everyone, pelt me now with rocks and garbage!) The first two sections of 2112 (the Overture, and Temples of Syrinx) are FREAKIN' AMAZING!!! The rest just isn't nearly as interesting, my opinion. If you want to go do a 20-minute-plus video from 2112, play the entire "B" side of the album -- much more enjoyable (but that's in my opinion, again.) Cheers!

@@TheThamesmen Hi guys, can I make an amendment? Rush did so many tours over the years, I know that they did not always play the entire 2112 piece in concert themselves. I am confident to say that you can probably find concert footage of Rush playing the abbreviated 2112 that every longtime fan and most casual fans of Rush are familiar with, which I mentioned in my first comment. It is the first two parts(?) or sections(?) of 2112 and I suspect that there is a decent chance that you guys might bestow the honor of "Krakatoa Banger" to that abbreviated performance. I can whole-heartedly endorse a Thamesmen reaction video to that! Thanks again!
