Do we need another Salahuddin to turn around our fortunes? Salahuddin Ayubi, the 12th-century general, statesman and sultan, is mythologised for his victory over the Crusaders in 1187 at Hattin and, ultimately, the reclamation of Islam’s third holiest place, Al Aqsa in Jerusalem. At a time when the Muslim ummah is undergoing what many suggest, with good evidence, to be the worst period in Muslim history - his name and mission remain an inspiration.
Yet many of us, have scant knowledge of the man behind the myth, the prevailing social and political climate that made him who he was and the geopolitical context within which he acquired his sense of mission. Like all historical heroes, there are periods of highs and lows in their lives and the deeper we dig, we find complexities that do not fit well into our idealistic rendering of history.
To help us understand the great Salahuddin, we invited Dr Abdul Rahman Azzam onto the show. Dr. Azzam has authored several books, including Saladin: The Triumph of the Sunni Revival. He is a scholar specialising in Islamic history, and we are grateful for his time.
If we are to recreate a Salahuddin, maybe his society the men with whom he surrounded himself, and the backdrop of a greater Sunni revival will aid us in understanding the chivalry with which he is famed and the mission of the man himself.

His uniting of the different elements of the Islamic world is perhaps an even greater achievement than the conquest of Jeruselum.

@@pebystroll All those personalities belong to different categories. Timur and Chengis (Temujin) were hellbent on killing & destruction. They both shared a similar Mongol-Turkic heritage from the Asian Steppes. Napoleon and Charlemagne were a thousand years apart. They both tried to unify Europe, but on their own terms and timelines. As far as we know Salahuddin was neither destructive, nor was he repressive & power hungry.

Very interesting podcast. @thethinkingmuslim has produced great content lately. Masha Allah brother. With regards to this podcast. There is so many things I’d want to respond. I agree with Dr Abdur Rahman Azzam when it comes to the portrayal of Salahedinne in modern times. He is often seen as this legendary general and leader. Even though I regard him as someone of a high moral character; when you look at the reality, there are more capable and successful leaders/generals in Islamic history. In the end, Salahedinne did not succeed in removing the crusaders from the region. On the point of the golden age. First and foremost, as a muslim, the golden age of Islam happened during the reign of Umar ibn Khattab. You can see the contrast between Salahedinne’s time and that of the companions of the prophet. Where the companions of Salahedinne became weary of war, the sahaba did not whilst the latter faced far worse odds. It goes to show that the companions of the prophet are really a special generation. May Allah reward them with the best of rewards. Lastly, I think the time we live in nowadays is not so dissimilar to the previous ages. We have liberalism that holds the most dominant position politically and economically. But to say that this ideology is not based in transcendent principles is not entirely correct. The framework in which liberalism operates is based on foundations that are based in metaphysics. The reality is that when practised, liberalism shows it many flaws and contradictions. The believer should always remain optimistic. During the last few decades we have seen a resurgence of Islam. Particularly when it comes to young men. Insha’Allah we can create the circumstances (with Allah’s help) to generate leaders that will revive the Ummah.

Saladin conquered Jerusalem by first uniting the Muslim community through educational and political measures. He established madrassahs and worked to remove internal divisions, making the Muslim world stronger. Then, he secured support in regions like Syria and Egypt before capturing Jerusalem. This approach strengthened the Muslim ummah and allowed him to successfully conquer the city.

As God lives, he who writes forgot all that Jesus had said: how that he should be taken up from the world, and that he should suffer in a third person, and that he should not die until near the end of the world. Wherefore he went with the mother of Jesus and with John to the cross. The high priest caused Judas ;to be brought before him bound, and asked him of his disciples and his doctrine. Whereupon Judas, as though beside himself, answered nothing to the point. The high priest then adjured him by the living God of Israel that he would tell him the truth.

It is important to protest the bad actions of the ruler Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "You will have rulers some of whom you approve and some of whom you will disapprove. Could you make a video on alMalik alDhahir Baybars? One of the greatest commanders/strategists, but also one of the greatest statesmen and administrators. (Unlike Salahudin, as mentioned at 1:08:30, though Baybars was far more ruthless/less chivalric) Creating the most professional army on earth at the time, perhaps in all of human history up to that point. And proved his skill by defeating the Mongols, a far greater for than Salahudin faced, whilst also dealing an immense blow to the crusaders. Administratively he strengthened the unity of sunni islam through his 4 madhhab system. and made Egypt-Syria more united than ever before. As well as many other major reforms All while being a slave from the distant Cuman-Kipchak steppe..... I've also heard, that before Europeans popularized Salahudin in the middle east, Baybars was far more popular.

Unifying the leadership of Muslims in the Grand Mosque after Muslims were dispersed in prayer for the four imams of jurisprudence during the time of the Ottoman Empire. 2. Restoring security in the Arabian Peninsula after tribes were warring among themselves, as well as the persecution inflicted on the Arabs by the Ottoman Turks, as well as the killing of pilgrims due to the lack of a strong state even during the time of the Ottoman Sultanate. 3. Educating the Bedouins after they were ordered to settle in villages. This was a historical moment in the interest in education after they were neglected by the Ottoman Empire. 4. Demolish the shrines that were built in the last three hundred years and return the Arabs to the Islamic monotheism in which the Prophet Muhammad and his companions believed. 5. Building a strong Arab state after the Arab division and fragmentation after the fall of the Abbasid state and the failure of the Great Arab Revolt by Sharif Hussein.

Sir,Salahuddin was a Kurd muslim warrior. In 21st century there are no warriors only politicians and army generals as presidents engaged in internecine conflicts. The center of Arab religion is S Arab and Jerusalem is under the control of Israel.

The Fatimid called Zangi for help in crises only not in their good time. One just wish that we would not act prejudice regardless we're Sunni or Shia. But historically Shia always acted more prejudice then Sunni and as a result the Muslim world was divided back and divided today as well.
