"Dear Winter" has been hitting me very differently after my dad passed away in January, because my dad /was/ the one that taught me how to curse (much to my mother's chagrin), and he liked sending me "love you have a good day" texts whenever I went to school, and he always asked me about my day whenever he started picking me up from college. We'd compare music tastes (his music being where I picked up a good chunk of the curse words in my vocabulary), and I'd ask him about history stuff or whatever show he was watching, and he was always willing to hear me out after an argument and I had time to cool down. My mom might have chosen my name, but my dad was who I went to when kids made fun of it and called me Amanda and Armada on purpose. I hate that I can't remember if I shared "Dear Winter" with him or not. He was the one who taught me and my brothers how to show someone you love them, because he loved everyone he met. When he was starting to get better, I promised myself I was going to come out to him, and that's still one of the things I regret not telling him. I really felt everything you were saying when you were talking about this song and your grandpa, Mr. Bill. Thanks for helping me remember all the fun times I had with my dad. ♡

Ok Orchestra was going to have a Turning Out Part 3, but Ryan, the writer of all the Turning Outs, realized he hadn’t had any serious developments in his love life like the ones that inspired the first 2 parts, and he didn’t want to force something less authentic just so OKO could have a part 3.
@mystariomoon1043 жыл бұрын
I doubt anyone will see this or take the time to read it but I decided to put my hat in the ring. As an Aromantic person (someone who doesn't feel romantic attraction) both turning out one and two hit really close to home, I relate to it cause it's that feeling of being told hey you just haven't found the 'right one' yet and being like hey but don't you want to see how this ends. I love my friends and family but sometimes theirs a disconnect when romance is expected to form in some sort of way. It's interesting I suppose.
@iamabirb27483 жыл бұрын
As an aroace, I feel the exact same way! Turning Out in particular just destroys me every time I listen to it, like it's putting my mess of emotions into something beautiful that I can hear echoed back to me. It also makes me remember a very specific moment in 9th grade, before I identified, where I was telling my best friend that I really had no idea the difference between romance and friendship, and we talked a little bit before settling on, it doesn't really matter right now but hopefully as I grow up I'll be able to figure myself out.
@megan20983 жыл бұрын
Same my dude. As an aro/ace I love both of those songs, but at the same time they're really painful for me with how hard they hit.
@abbyj27832 жыл бұрын
Same! The “this don’t feel like Disney” line is what hit me. Crushes always seemed like a hollywood thing to me. I assumed that since I wasn’t feeling it, it must not be real. I didn’t understand relationship drama and love songs and all of that. Then I experienced my one and only crush, and it was immediately denied when he got with a different girl. I finally got to see that crushes were a thing, but I never got that feeling again. I’m starting to accept that I don’t need that feeling to love. I still have doubts, but then I talk to my current BF and I feel better. I may not feel the same things he does, but that doesn’t make our love any less valid. So yeah. It doesn’t feel like Disney. It doesn’t have to.
@abbyj27832 жыл бұрын
AJR has a unique ability to make songs that are usually about very specific feelings that still become very relatable. Their song “Don’t Throw Out My Legos” really hit me since I’m currently at that transition point in my life where I’m on the verge of moving out and being independent, but afraid to lose that safety net of home. I also really like “Humpty Dumpty” because its about bottling away your pain and putting on a smile so as not to burden others with your own problems. The last verse really punches you in the gut as you hear his voice almost break. There’s also “The Trick” which is about a pathological liar who is afraid of the person he loves most finding out all his lies. If you ever return to AJR, please listen to these!

Seeing you react to My Play and knowing that you relate to it in a lot of the same ways I do feels so reassuring and validating right now. I'm 22 and am hitting that point in my life where thinking about my childhood isn't as much of a constant anymore, while still having a lot of feelings about it deep down. This song, especially the video, is the most accurate description of being a child in a divorcing family that I have EVER seen. It hits in such a guttural spot. Thank you for reacting to it, bud. Edit: dear god, I just got to the bit about how you felt during your graduation and that hits so hard for me. I've never been able to get over the absolute fear of even having both of my parents be in the same place, and that feeling was definitely a factor during my graduation too. It's a factor now when going to see my little brother's basketball games, and I've never been able to escape the need to go through an entire code-switch when going from one parent's house to another. During my graduation there was a lot going on, and it got to the point that I just wished one of my parents wouldn't even show up. Just, wow. I couldn't believe that I wasn't alone in having feelings like that about my graduation.

You said “child of divorce” and I immediately thought: Oh this is gonna be a ride if you listen to “My Play” and then you said the next song was “My Play.” We cried together on that one.
@RatGodofRats3 жыл бұрын
My Play hit hard. as a child with parents that didn't divorce, but split up and especially when I did make plays for them to watch, but my father did contact me anymore and my mom would never listen or pay attention. So like YEAH for me it really really hit home But the song is about the boys and how they felt with divorce of their parents, alot of the songs you'll see is about their own experiences.

If you do a part 3 I highly suggest Worlds Smallest Violin, Humpty Dumpty, Ordinaryish People, Christmas In June and Next Up Forever + Finale (can't wait to see what you do next) which these two are interconnected since it's the opening and closing of Neotheater
@RatGodofRats3 жыл бұрын
World Smallest Violin and Humpty Dumpty have the same vibes as Way Less Sad Ordinaryish People gives me the same vibes as Bummerland, it's very jumpy AND a collab with The Blue Man Group Christmas In June is a beautiful song and it's happy Next Up Forever and Finale aren't sad songs out you can feel the passion and it made me cry lol

Their new album is amazing I listen to it so much, also dear winter will always be my favorite song I idk y but it really hits deep, and another side note my play really relates to me because my parents are in the process of getting divorced so I really understand the lyrics and their music just always makes me feel happy and sad at the same time

Yes yes yes!!! I love seeing your reactions to music artist, and AJR just so happens to be my favorite band. I relate to My Play a lot too, and it had literally JUST came out when things started happening in my family, so it was a big comfort song for me then. Also, take all the time you need to get ready to upload more vids again, we'll be here waiting!!! 🥰🥰

Oh man, listening to him talk about My Play makes me realize that there could be more depth to Christmas in June than I originally thought... Good video, love hearing this guy talk and really think about these songs. I feel like he should check out Ordinaryish People, Growing Old on Bleecker Street, as well as Christmas in June.
