Christ experienced inward knowledge of the depths of human sin and confronted this reality with the deepest charity. Therefore, He also held the deepest mournfulness or contrition of heart that any human being has ever known.
Yet at the same time, Christ is consoled on the cross in his human soul by the knowledge he has of the Father, of the victory of divine life that is occurring through His passion, and by the confident hope He has in the eventual resurrection of His flesh.

How would we be able to identify with Christ with our sufferings as human beings,if He did not suffer! It is consoling to know whatever we suffer on this earth, we know that Jesus suffered it first! So, we can endure it and accept it!

What needs to be stressed in explaining this is often missing in explanations on this topic, namely WHY humans need saving and FROM WHAT they need to be saved. The answers to these questions are almost every time taken for granted and thus skipped. This is also (mostly) done in this video. E.g. "Christ suffered a human death for us at our hands", but WHY? "Because He loves us" is not a sufficient answer because it does not address the question directly. A dad saves his kid from running onto the street and under a car because he loves him, yes, but mainly because *he doesn't want him to get run over*, the latter part is the answer. And he doesn't want him to get run over because he loves him. Skipping this step makes it all unclear. So, in explaining this topic, you need to stress the component of *SIN* and its effects, ETERNAL DAMNATION. It is, I think, precisely because the modern world has lost (almost) all notion of SIN that it has lost its capability to return to or adopt Christianity. Putting therefore the needed emphasis on SIN and ETERNAL DAMNATION in explaining the Paschal mystery is crucial for it to make sense.

We have covered St. Thomas's treatment of original justice, original sin, angelic/human choice and vice/sin in previous Aquinas 101 videos (which can be found here on our KZbin channel or at Aquinas101.com). The topic you speak of is also mentioned several times throughout course 6 of Aquinas 101, as we move through Aquinas's treatise on Christ.

Another reason, in my opinion, that it was fitting that Christ would suffer and die is that if God gave no punishment for sin it would go against God’s role as judge. A good judge should give punishment for evil doing. And Christ accepted our punishment for us satisfying divine justice against the human race. Yes, God did not have to do this. Out of his freedom he could have willed something else, but I believe that he wanted his justice to be satisfied. I think that the Bible speaks of this. Christ talks about his passion as a ransom he is paying for many. Our sin has us trapped and so Christ’s payment to the father for our sin frees us from our sin. Isaiah 53 also makes it very clear that Christ is bearing the punishment that we deserved for our good. Great video guys.

You said, "Christ's payment to the Father for our sin frees us from our sin." Which role does our believe plays in that salvation? If so, how?

Your theory is actually an official theory! It’s called the Penal Substitution theory of the atonement. It was the belief of John Calvin and is currently the position of Calvinist and many evangelical churches. However, it is opposed by the Catholic Church, for the simple reason it would be unjust for God to punish anyone who was innocent, like Christ. The main catholic theory of atonement is similar, but not the same. It is called satisfaction theory of the atonement. However instead of God punishing Christ, Christ offers himself to the father. In doing so, he satisfied God’s *reparitive* justice, not *retributive* Justice. e.g. god was satisfied by the outweighing of all sin by the sheer goodness of Christ’s sacrifice, Instead of God being satisfied by seeing Christ suffer, this venting his wrath.

@@tritongeeves9371 I’ve done some research on this, and I’ve thought a lot about it. I don’t believe in penal substitution, but I do believe in the Satisfaction theory of the atonement. The reason I gave is pretty much what Aquinas says in the third part, question 50, article 1. Aquinas says that it was fitting for Christ to die to satisfy for us by taking on himself the penalty for our sin. While God could have saved us without the death of Christ, it doesn’t satisfy God’s justice in the same way. God desires justice and so while just forgiving us isn’t unjust, it doesn’t truly give justice. God could have saved us through other means, but this way was most fitting of divine justice.

The Bible clearly stated that we need not BABBLE (repeating over and over in a single prayer) from our prayers like the heathen (pagan/gentiles) do. Christ Jesus taught His Apostles to keep it short and simple, because before they ask GOD thru prayer what they need, GOD knows it already. Christ Jesus taught a simple and short prayer to GOD which is the "Lord's Prayer" as a guide pattern to our personal prayer... Could anybody justify the logic and spiritual explanation why we need to pray more than 50 times (actual 53X) the "Hail Mary" and "Holy Mary," respectively in the rosary? Why not 10 or 12 times, nor 40 times only? And also why not 7 or 3 mysteries instead of 4 or 5 mysteries? These numbers 10, 12, 40, 3, 7 are all Biblical numbers written. Can someone logically explain to us why?

Constantinople was a Persian. Scholar etymologists might derive this notion from the fact that he had Windex© in his tomb. Was INRI, really an acronym; or was Christ already moving about without converted condemnations, like the time that he literally, 'disappeared, seemingly divinely, from behind a childrens' puppet stage' once upon a time??

I sometimes believe that the work of God and Jesus on the Cross, is a level of work that encompassed all of the known good God had to offer us, at the same time showing us the depth of his love and every attribute, and I mean absolute depth. Also this fellow who does these videos is an outstanding theologian, who I am learning a great deal of insight into the thought of Thomas. Good stuff.

Why does the Salutation/Greetings of Angel Gabriel to Blessed Mary was made for pray? Why does the proclamation of St. Elizabeth (cousin of Mary) was also converted to a prayer? Do we have a right to choose any passages we do like in the Bible and make it into a Standard prayer to God? Why not make a prayer out of the written BEATITUDES it was also in the Bible, just like "Hail Mary?"

Based on the other blog, the Rosary came to existence around 1214 A.D. only thru Saint Dominic given by Blessed Virgin Mary. Therefore, the Apostles and early Christianity do not have the practice of praying the Rosary. Christ Jesus did not teach his Apostles/Disciples about the Rosary prayer but instead, He taught them the "Lord's Prayer," as a simple and short prayer without repetition (babbling) as a guide pattern for our personal prayer to God. I truly love, respect, and honor Blessed Mary in a Biblical way (manner) as the surrogate mother of Christ Jesus humanity (Body/Flesh), but not the Divine Nature of Christ (LOGOS/WORD). It is not appropriate to call Blessed Mary as the "Mother of GOD" for she has nothing to do with the Divine Nature of Christ (GOD) for the Son of God existed along with the Father God in His bosom and before Blessed Mary were even created/born. Therefore, "Mother of Jesus" or "Mother of Christ," is the right and appropriate title and acknowledgment for her, but not "Mother of GOD." I also have a problem with the title "VIRGIN" attached to Blessed Mary... The bible stated by Mary herself, who said, "I will be called BLESSED among women." She did not say, "I will be called BLESSED VIRGIN among women." The original manuscript that was written and prophesied by Prophet Isaiah was "Ha Alma" which means "Young Maiden/girl." The word maiden/girl does not always necessarily mean to be virgin, based on the bible... Remember the only daughter of Jacob, after Dinah was raped, she was still called "Ha Alma" (Maiden), as a young girl without a husband. God the father just needs a "Full of Grace" young girl (Ha Alma) who happens to be a virgin at that time without a husband yet, (only betrothal/fiancee) when the visitation of Angel Gabriel occurred to ask her own permission (freewill) whether she will accept or reject the task given to her by GOD, to use her WOMB as a vessel to carry the Humanity (Flesh/Body) for the Son of GOD. in modern terminology, it is called, 'SURROGATE MOTHER."... Why is it so? In Hebrew 10:5 (paraphrased) Christ said, "a PREPARED BODY (flesh) was created for me by my Father." In this sense, there was no fertilization of the Egg of Mary by the Holy Spirit to create the Flesh of Christ Jesus. It was already a prepared body by God the Father long before Mary was born. It was placed by GOD the "Prepared Body" (most likely perhaps a 3 to 7 days old fetus) to Mary's womb. In modern technology today, it is proven to be successfully possible to implant a fetus to a surrogate mother, the same way what GOD have done 2000 years ago in Israel. Now, regarding the "PERPETUAL (Forever) VIRGINITY of Blessed Mary," the Bible does not support that because according to the scripture, St. Joseph himself attested and said, "I never knew my wife (Mary) until (after) Christ Jesus was born and called HIm Jesus" (paraphrase Matt. 1:25)_. The word "KNEW" was a modest way of stating a "Marital Sexual Consummation" relationship between husband and wife... Therefore, regardless of whether Blessed Mary has other children, (which is debatable) the fact supported by the Bible, was that her virginity was gone after Christ Jesus was born... To deny this Biblical narration by St. Joseph means the Bible is wrong and lied to us. Regarding, ASSUMPTION of Blessed Mary which means she did not taste death, for her body was taken by the Angels in Heaven as a doctrine of Catholic was also not supported by the Bible. Why? First, it was not written in the scripture, and second, is it odd, that Apostle John who happens to be the caregiver of Blessed Mary did not even write a single letter/epistle or document to prove the Assumption of Blessed Mary?... How come Apostle John did not even recognize in Revelation 12, the woman clothed with the Sun with a crown of 12 stars on her head? Why John did not recognize the Woman as Blessed Mary? Apostle John should have written, "A mystery in Heaven, I (John) saw Blessed Mary clothed with the Sun with a crown of 12 stars on her head." But it was not written that way because the woman was not truly Blessed Mary, for the woman symbolized as a Nation like Israel (People (Jews) of GOD) or perhaps Church of GOD (Christians) but definitely not Blessed Mary. Another thing, the title "IMMACULATE CONCEPTION (without original sin) of Blessed Mary," was not also supported by the Holy Scripture (Bible). The word "FULL OF GRACE" does not mean without original sin for St. Stephen was also called Full of Grace with Power, yet he tasted death from stoning... In Luke 1:46-49 (paraphrase) Blessed Mary said and proclaimed, "My (Mary) soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in GOD, my SAVIOR." It is very clear from her own statement, that Blessed Mary acknowledged that she needs a Savior... A person who is "SINLESS" does not need a Savior. In Roman 3:23 (paraphrase) it says, "For ALL have sinned and fall short of the Glory of GOD." It did not say, "except Blessed Mary, all sinned and fall short in the Glory of GOD." To deny this written scripture that ALL (no exception/all human) sinned and fall short means the Bible is a fraud, incorrect, wrong, and lied to us... Lastly, the titles "Queen of Heaven" and "Queen of Peace", this titles were nowhere to be found in the Bible. From Isaiah 9:6 (paraphrase) Christ Jesus was called the "Prince of Peace." Now, if Blessed Mary is truly the Queen of Peace as the Catholic proclaimed, logically speaking, it only follows to show that Blessed Mary is higher than Christ Jesus, for a Queen is higher in position or rank than a Prince... That is why the "Queen of Peace" nor the "Queen of Heaven" are not appropriate titles for Blessed Mary, biblically speaking... Amen.

If "FULL OF GRACE" meant that the Blessed Mary excelled in all the virtues and gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit starting from her conception/creation, in other words, "SINLESS," then why does St. Stephen was also called "FULL OF GRACE with POWER" and yet he tasted death from stoning and his body/soul was not taken by the angels in heaven. He was buried by the Disciples. Does St. Stephen also "SINLESS" from the beginning of his conception just like Blessed Mary since both were called FULL OF GRACE?

I would like to share my thought, I have been obsessing about this and I feel like this video speaks exactly my thought process, but there are still some gaps. From this video, I am thinking God does not come to redeem us, he come to prove us (gravity of sin and intensity of love as you said). All of the effects of the Passion already can be done by other means (as you said). Please let me know if I am getting wrong somewhere, thank you father!

Father, I know the Dominican’s place a high emphasis on intellect and knowledge. However, does such a detailed explanation really help the average soul in understanding the mystery of salvation? Ex: few of us really knows how a wind-up watch really works with all of its complex gears and moving parts. We simply know a watch helps us know what time it is and thus serves its purpose. Showing all the complex gears an inner workings might be an Popoy for awe, but since we’re not a master watch maker, does that knowledge add to the function of the watch? The Paschal Mystery is God’s plan for our salvation. Is it essential that we know the working “innards” of that plan, or shouldn’t we just accept it? Ex: one doesn’t need to know the specific and precise ingredients or method of cooking let’s say coq au vin, but our true appreciation of the meal is not knowing how it was prepared, but accepting it and relishing in its deliciousness and being thankful. Sometimes I think Catholic theology over-explains what is a mystery and simply cannot be explained.

Because Theology is “Faith Seeks Understanding” as St. Anselm put it. we use our GOD GIVEN intellect and philosophy to aid the mind and Heart to know our faith more intimately and closely. Furthermore if we do not know the faith it would be impossible to defend it or evangelize.

It’s not Catholic teaching that he bore the wrath of God or was a penal substitute. Rather, Christ offered himself as a propitiation to the Father as a gift.
