Last weekend in Nottingham will be remembered for the shocking moment a Leicester City supporter ran onto the pitch and assaulted Nottingham Forest players celebrating their third goal. Cameron Toner, 19, has been charged with “three counts of common assault and going onto a playing area at a football match” and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on February 24.
But for officers on duty in Nottingham, it was only one of many football-related incidents across another weekend that shamed the national game. Times Sport's Matt Lawton reports on the new face of hooliganism threatening the game.

Its not violence. Its posturing and adolescent hooliganism, they get very scared in genuinely violent situations, hence their need for police escorts.

What's the problem this is all part of growing up going to football with the lads is a right of passage for teenage and 20 somethings seeing the country learning to drink and learning to look out for each other. There are kids killing each other over postcodes in our major cities but police want to stop groups of young lads going on a day out and occasionally acting antisocially. What a soft country we have become.

This is horrendous , no not the behaviour of the fans but the inept journalism this country now has to tolerate. There are so many inaccuracies in this its liable tbf The Times have lowered themselves to the rag top brigad. I was at this match and on the train that was apparently taken out of commission, yes it was at Leicester its final destination, and it was Grimsby who got the last minute free kick and terrorised the wheelchair bound supporters.

Now the Eastern parts of Europe are the champions of it and even other European countries that wouldn’t have tried before have over taken. This is what makes this pathetic dishonest far fetched journalism (if you can call it that) so infuriating. The spineless traitorous cowards creating this would be the type to make a hit piece on innocent English fans who had been attacked within an inch of their life’s by highly organised battle hardened hooligans from Eastern Europe or South America.

This is pathetic journalism and video in general. Literally nothing happened other than a well supported non league game. So what if certain groups of like minded supporters goad one another and maybe even fight each other. Or chant on a train while having beers. From my many away days I can assure you the main problems are caused by police attitude towards fans. You can see it when players run to celebrate with fans and stewards act like they need to keep them separated at all costs so they grab fans and players alike. Same situation with no steward/police intervention would cause no issues whatsoever.

There is a clear correlation between high poverty levels, lack of opportunities and football violence. The UK in 2021-2022 is where we were back in the late 70's-80's. Large swathes of disaffected youth with bugger all to look forward to in life will behave like this. It isn't rocket science.

@@michaelharrison3602 nope. Back in the 1980's a lot of people were struggling financially. From around 1983 onwards the economy did begin to improve, but only in the home counties/London and things were pretty grim in the rest of the country, especially up North. The whole thing with Hooligans wearing expensive clobber had nothing to do with their level of disposable income and everything to do with one upmanship. I remember regularly spending around 80% of my income on clobber and a fair amount of it was nicked when I didn't have the money.

I'm in my mid 40's, this is the 1st town game I've been to in many years, but was dragged along by friends trying to help me through my mental illness issues. I saw no hint of drugs, no hint of violence, and to basically be labelled as guilty by association by lacklustre, uninventive and frankly juvenile journalism is frankly infuriating. For the record, I, and the LARGE amount of town fans around me that went from train, to pub, to ground and them home had an amazing, fun, and incident free day out. But I guess there's no sensationalism in that so you don't want to know. Amateurs.

I'm a 55 year old Stoke fan, and I must say , in the past I have been very naughty, and caught up in mither. Funnily enough in 1990, at Grimsby was one. I'm not proud of myself or some of my actions, but seriously, this half baked journalistic attempt misses the mark. There's Youth Firms at virtually every club, and yes, some of them are 14-15. But I can't recall seeing them whacking coke up their nose. Cocaine is a problem across the country , and trying to give the impression that 14-15 year olds at football are coked up is ridiculous and , dare I say , inaccurate .

Back in the 70's there were loads of lads of 13,14 and 15 going to the football and already getting involved in the fighting with "opposition" of the same age,it's not new and if anything it was unusual for older blokes to get involved...except Millwall of course. I was brought up in South London and you'd get mobs from different schools arranging mass brawls, most of us were used to violence from teachers and at home where no-one called social services if your Dad gave you a clump or a Teacher slapped you round the back of the head. Look at old videos on KZbin of Millwall's F Troop and West Ham's original TCF,bunch of kids mostly.

Sounds more like they are making excuses as to why they must introduce a police state. Some of the fans arrived five hours before the game says the appalled narrator.

So the only violence you could actually show was from entirely different games that didn't involve grimsby fans? And FYI, it was town that got that last minute goal. Can't even get that right and you call yourself a journalist? Editor should be embarrassed too.

Costs of policing football matches with high level risk classifications can be surprisingly costly, and as far as I understand it, the costs of policing football matches falls to the local authorities, meaning the tax paying residents of the cities in question are footing the huge bills for these gobshite kids to shout at other gobshite kids for 2 hours. Its appalling really.

I think the seventies was worse many more running battles involving hundreds of fans and the police hadn't worked out what to do back then. Also hooligans were younger in the seventies many were only 14, 15 or 16 and didn't care about getting knicked by the mid eighties most hooligans had become more careful and the police were dealing with it better with cc tv etc
