I am not however an 'Aussie' myself, but a descendent of Poms before the label existed, although the family who went in the 1950s were certainly known and called 'Poms'...as were those who went out for work in the last decade. The term came into use apparantly around the turn of the last century. 'Whinging Poms' is a popular term too, meant to describe immigrant Brits unused to the heat, rural life, the many creatures that want to kill them, and complain about it. The northeast have lost all the large manufacturing industries , and been sold out by Labor and Tories for years, as Nigel mentioned the REDCAR steel plant shipped to India and the steel made there. But in the North East what about all the large engineering companies that employed apprentices to learn a trade such as C.A. Parsons, and a 100 others outfits that made GB and the northeast famous. like building the Sydney harbor Bridge and supplying all the steel components to do so.And Dorman Long, the list goes on and on, this also applies to many towns and cites in the country. All sold of to wanna be rich types in Westminster aided by the banks, None of them interested in keeping GB strong and powerful as we have always been.
