Yding Skovhøj which was once considered the highest point, includes a burial mound from later part of the stone age or early part of the bronze age. As this is manmade, it should not count. Ejer Bavnehøj a few kilometers further east has a tower which can be seen from motorway E45 between Horsens and Skanderborg. The hill itself was also for long time considered the highest natural (not manmade) point, but some years ago it was discovered, that some of the soil on the top is not in its original place, so this is not a natural point either. Since then Møllehøj a few hundred meters from Ejer Bavnehøj is considered the highest point by a few centimeters margin.

Tim, I would like to invite you to another challenge. You may have seen the highest mountain in the Netherlands (and now Luxemburg) as well as the cliff of Urk, but you haven't seen the most beautiful mountain. It is situated on the island of Texel (pronounced Tessel), just off the coast of Den Helder. Rather surprisingly it's called 'De Hoge Berg', which means 'The High Mountain'. It's been formed during the last ice age and is one of the main reasons the Dutch dunelike coastline is were it is today. So in other words: it is the anchor on which the western Netherlands has been built. No Hoge Berg, no Amsterdam, nor Rotterdam, nor Scheveningen. Furthermore it's a nature reserve and the views are ABSOLUTELY stunning. And, if you visit in springtime, you can pet the cute lambs that are jumping around in the meadows. And of course it's a great opportunity to visit a real Dutch island instead of URK or Aruba (which is sooooo overrated). Will you think about it?

The folks in Ecuador made a similar mistake. For them it must be especially embarrassing since their country is named for being on the equator. Anyway, back some decades ago they built a monument on what was then thought to be the equator a few kilos north of Quito. It is quite an elaborate thing with even a tourist trap showing how water swirls one way in the northern hemisphere and the other way in the southern hemisphere. It cost you a few bucks to witness this "natural phenomenon. However, the advent of GPS shows the actual equator is about 500 meters to the south. Makes one question the veracity of the water swirling exhibit. Could it be a scam?
@0LoneTech5 жыл бұрын
It has been tested fairly thoroughly, and the effect is real but tiny. Matt Parker even made the experiment with one sink. It would be nearly impossible to demonstrate at the equator.

Speaking of the Netherlands' highest mountain, that was directly responsible for Switzerland getting to host the Winter Olympics. When the Winter Olympics first started in Chamonix, France the Summer Games were in Paris. This wasn't a coincidence. The Chamonix and Paris Games were at the time considered part of the same deal and before World War II all countries that hosted the Summer Games also hosted the Winter Games with one exception. That exception was in 1928 when Amsterdam hosted the games. Now you can have some wonderful skating and cross-country skiing events during the Dutch winter, but the one thing you CAN'T do is alpine skiing---not when your "highest peak" is ridiculously low. So the winter games were played instead in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Things stayed that way until World War II and for the 1948 Games, London hosted the Summer Games and St. Moritz hosted the winter. I believe it IS possible to go skiing in Britain, but they were having their hands full just hosting ONE set of Games that soon after the end of WWII so it was easier to do in in St. Moritz whose country had stayed out of the fighting. Ever since then the two set of Games were split up, and then in 1998 they moved the Winter Games to a completely different year.

Hi Tim, nice video. Sometimes a high mountain can be much more interesting than the highest. For example, in Hungary, Kékes is the highest, but you can almost get to the summit by car, while the less high mountain of Köris Hegy (number 8th high) is a very long walk in a beautiful environment.

I don't know if you are still in the Benelux, but maybe you could do a video on Belgium's Grands Travaux Inutiles? They are a series of bridges, buildings and roads that were planned and partially built without ever finishing them. The city of Charleroi has an unfinished metroline which has been there for about 35 years, and too expensive to demolish.

I'm back in London now, but I would love to do a video on the unused part of the Charleroi metro some day, thank you for the great suggestion!

@@TheTimTraveller You're welcome! Here's quite an extensive list of unused buildings and engineering works in Belgium, The Netherlands and surrounding countries. It's in Dutch because that page seems to have the most info on them, but translating shouldn't be much of an issue I reckon. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grote_nutteloze_werken

I enjoyed the train journey (what's not to like about a loco hauled train for 4 euros?) But not sure I'll put Kneiff on my list of things to do when I get round to visiting Luxembourg!

I loved the Playdays music! Haven’t heard that for at least 25 years. Also I live in Luxembourg but have never visited this incredible mountain.

Many Europeans I met thought Luxembourg was extremely boring, but I spent a full, snowy day there and thought it was beautiful. It has a unique quaintness for a city

Have you concidered travelling by steamtrain with the ZLSM (Zuid-Limburgse Stoomtrein Maatschappij) when you were in the South of Limburg? www.miljoenenlijn.nl/ Another area you might find interesting is the area of Coo in Belgium. You've got a underground powerplant in a mountain which you can visit from a viewing platform inside the mountain, you've got some beautifull waterfalls at the village of Coo and at La Gleize you have one of the few remaining King Tiger tanks in world just sitting in the street. At Remouchamps you have some strange and ancient underground caves , a little up ahead lays Spa which is a beautifull old Monaco like city with it's racing track and just a little further you have Signal de Botrange which is the highest point in Belgium.

Going to have to go back aren't I? :) Didn't know any of those places, apart from Spa and the Signal. The powerplant sounds v interesting - I think we have a similar one in North Wales

@@TheTimTraveller Yeah the whole area has a lot of hidden gems! Did you also know that at Moresnet you have the longest railwaybridge of Europe? And around the corner at Plombières you have a hiking area inside the old Belgian Zinc mine (Bleyberg, which was competing with Moresnet's Zinc mine) with a waterfall that goes inside a mountain (50°44'10.5"N 5°58'00.1"E). If you ever want to go back and need even more tips feel free to contact me :)
