Why Denmark Has Never Really Been Sure Where Its Highest Point Is

In February 2005, Denmark discovered that its highest point wasn't actually its highest point. This was a bit of a surprise - but to be fair, the same thing had happened in 1953. And 1924. And 1847. But how can it be so difficult to find your highest point? Or does the point actually change? Do Danish mountains somehow move around every few decades? I went to Denmark to find out for myself...

Danish archaeologist here. "Bavnehøj" literally means "burning hill", which was a common manmade construction in the iron and viking age to as a system to alert your territory about oncoming enemies by lighting a visible fire. The reason why the height is so hard to determine (man made/natural) is that they were often built on already constructed Bronze age grave mounds which were also already constructed centuries before, because of their natural peaks in the landscape, but some and many were over-plowed. So yeah, considering this history and erosion, who knows.

The English equivalent of "bavnehøj" is "beacon"; for example in the Malvern Hills you can find the Herefordshire Beacon and the Worcestershire Beacon which are both named from their use for signalling beacons even though they're both natural rather than man-made. Herefordshire Beacon also has an iron-age hill fort, known as British Camp.

Historical reference for the international audience; The inscription on the Tower at @04:54 reads "North-Schlesvig reunited with the Motherland" - Denmark was actually neutral in WW1, but after Germany was defeated, large parts of Jutland (which had been occupied by Prussia, and later Germany) since the war of 1864 were returned to Denmark in 1920, in an event known as the "reunification". It is a massive part of the national romance of Denmark, and there are a great number of monuments just like this tower.

Being a danish guy who grew up in Luxembourg (now living in not so flat Norway) and who used to go skiing in the Alps, I can without a doubt say I was underwhelmed by Himmelbjerget. As kids, my sister and I were so excited to see ‘the famous mountain’ but it soon turned into disappointment when our parents said “We are here!” (While dring in to the parking lot) and we could only reply “where is the mountain”. Keep up the good work!

The change in 2005 was that they started using Danish Elevation Model (DEM), which is a laser scanning (LIDAR) of the surface, the most recent is from 2022 and in the process of being released.

I live in New Zealand, and visited Denmark in 2019. Denmark feels quite similar to the rolling farmland in New Zealand, except there are no hills or mountains off in the distance, which was weird.

Yes, they have one train a week that you can take from Vatican City to the Pope's citadel in Italy, but not back again (at least you can't take the train all the way back, you have to get out in Italy). I'm not sure if it's running at the moment though, you'd have to check.

Can be quite literally if you go back to Aarhus and scale the TV tower just slightly outside of it, I'm pretty sure if you include man made structures that is the highest point in Denmark. If you want to climb something slightly easier than a TV tower though there's also the not quite a skyscraper being constructed at the top of Randersvej, if you go onto it's roof and bend over so your chest is sticking out then the highest point would be very close to your heart.

Seems like a lot of the Germanic countries use the word "Berg" rather loosely, especially in the plains of the Netherlands, northern Germany, and Denmark. EG. Berlin has a neighborhood called Prenzlauer Berg.

Around 35 years ago left Ireland and went to Denmark to visit friends. they took us to this area to show us the highest mountain. Whilst at the area of the peak, I spotted an abandoned bicycle in the ditch. ( Very rare in spotlessly clean Denmark). Pulled it out, and jumped on the bent rims of the bike to straighten them enough to make the flat wheels turn. Proceeded to ride the bike to the supposed peak. Put it carefully back in ditch afterwards.

With regards to the lowest point in The Netherlands, that does shift around. Just as they finished a piece of art in a small lake at the lowest point (and having to the top of the structure be exactly at 0 mtr NAP), it was measured again and it moved, two towns to the east :-) . We suffer from soil subsidence because of pumping the water away to keep our feet dry. And the rate of subsiding is not everywhere the same.

In Lithuania we have/had similar situation. For a long time it was believed that highest mountain (hill rather) is Juozapinė, but after new measurments it was discovered that actually the highest point is few hundred meters away at Aukštojas hill. But in both cases you wouldn't know it's the highest point of anything as the terrain is littered with small hills.

The Faroes contains some pretty lofty fells.I went up one called Sornfelli which I think was around 730m and it had a weather station on top and an unmanned military instillation below and very interesting ladders to get from the weather station to to military base plus signs telling you not to!

Brilliant. I'm wondering if tectonic movements might change the heights over time? Or indeed, the tilt of the land after the ice age. In the UK, the North (Scotland) is rising and the South (England) is sinking - all due to the land (in the north) recovering from being covered in ice. If this is happening in Denmark too, new high points may yet come into being.

Same thing is actually happening here in Denmark. North-western part is rising about 1 mm per year, while south-eastern part is sinking. But other than the peaks in that general area, I doubt there will be any other contenders any time soon. There are a lot of peaks on the ridgeline of Jutland, which is in the part that is slowly rising. But that is also where the peaks in the video are located, so...

Yes I think you're both right! The sources that I read suggested that these peaks are actually sinking - and that this movement was part of the reason why both Ejer Bavnehoj and Yding Skovhoj measured lower in 2005 than they did 1953. But that doesn't explain how Mollehoj ended up higher. So I wasn't fully convinced. There are doubtless a bunch of other factors involved too...

This can be seen on rocks on the coastline (where it is stable), rocks that once were under the ocean and are today on dry land.

Funny how the Netherlands is generally speaking one of the flattest countries ever but we don't even have the lowest highest point in Europe! I never expected there to be 7 countries below us. Especially not Denmark since I know Denmark has a lot more (landscape) curves than us. I always thought that since we're the flattest, we've also had the lowest highest point. Interesting!

I remember as a child we were driving toor from Legoland and my dad told us that we were passing Denmark’s highest mountain… I looked around confused and he pointed and after I finished laughing he confirmed that because Denmark is so flat the slight hill we could see was indeed the highest point in the country… well so they thought in the 1980s!

We have a similar story in Wisconsin when it comes to the highest point from sea level to highest point from local terrain. Rib Mountain in Wausau is believed to be the highest point, and still is from surrounding terrain. But is only the third highest point from sea level. Timm’s Hill in Ogema is the highest point, but is hard to tell because it is a gradual slope for most of it, and you really don’t notice it at all.

hi, another random Dane here... I remember climbing up Himmelbjerget on a school trip in the 5th grade, and it really is the closest thing we have to a mountain.... and I think I remember Ejer Baunehøj (strangely impressive pronounciation on that one, by the way) being the official highest point in my childhood in the late 80's/early 90's, but then later it was maybe Yding Skovhøj, and then I was just confused.. I've been biking in that area a few times, and you barely notice being at the so-called highest point.... the big hill near Leestrup in south-east Sjælland was more impressive....

Well done pronouncing those pesky Danish place names so well, Tim! - Lovely video, I learned quite a bit about the devil in the detail of the Danish mountain race. Please come back in the summer so you can take the lovely trip from Silkeborg to Himmelbjerget on "Hjejlen", the world´s oldest paddle steamer still in existence. Or.... is it? Because Norwegians claim that their "Skibladner" is actually the oldest. But, hah! They´re wrong, because Skibladner was heavily rebuilt, and is practically a Ship of Theseus, whereas Hjejlen is almost completely unchanged, even sporting the lovely original steam engine. However, they did swap out the boiler of Hjejlen in the 1930s, so eh... - Anyway, Hjejlen is amazing and the trip even more so, and that controversy would make for another of your great movies, Tim!

Well, if we are to go very technical on Norway, then "Skibladner" isn't even theirs historically speaking, as they were ruled by Sweden from 1813 until 1907. Before 1813, they were ruled by Denmark. A rule which started in 1397. On paper they were part of a union with Denmark, but in reality they were ruled by Denmark, as Norway didn't have a king or queen for the majority of those 416 years. In 1813 they finally declared independence... But that only lasted 6 months, before Sweden took them and kept them for another 94 years. "Skibladner" is allegedly built around 1888, which places it directly in the period of Swedish rule.
