Definitely tone bender tones in there... This being said, lots of vintage gear have cheap parts but snake oil hype over them due to availability and mythological legends around them mainly due to famous players. Here comes a company like Behringer or Warm Audio demystifying the whole thing. Well, it's a good thing for us mere mortals... Rock on!

What’s special about the originals though are the actual components. It’s not so easy and often expensive to source germanium transistors with the exact characteristics today, and they play a part of the tone. But yeah, you could build a perfectly awesome sounding Tone Bender with Silicon NPNs and cheap caps.

It's a bit difficult to say for sure. Uli Behringer is Swiss, not German, and the company do tend to use the softened g for the brand. I'd pronounce it Beh-ringer, but I don't know if Swiss German is influenced by the presence of widespread French and Italian speech in the same country.

cool - nice playing - thanks. with the level up that high, isn't a lot of the OD/fuzz/distortion being created by the pedal acting as a boost thats hitting the preamp hard? anyway, i hope you get some behringer tokens/credits for this - i suspect you've help them sell a few.
@casanovafunkenstein50902 күн бұрын
Yeah, but that's how most fuzz pedals were used back in the day because the amps didn't have a master volume, so the pedal would be on the whole time and the guitar's volume control was the way that the player was expected to transition from distortion to clean sounds. It's not too dissimilar to a treble booster in that respect, just with an inbuilt short that routes some of the signal to ground so that you get more distortion. It's less common for that to be done now with the prevalence of master volumes and switchable amp channels but it was pretty much the only option for most players in the 60s and 70s.
@TheToneshack2 күн бұрын
Thanks very much and glad you liked it. No word from them yet but who knows what could happen. Boost wise, I wouldn't say there is tons of output volume in this one. A bit but not enough to goose the front of a clean amp.

I feel like there's arguments to be made about the times when they've copied more contemporary products, misrepresented their products in marketing, and Uli just being a generally unlikeable person who has a history of making some serious PR blunders (such as mocking up a pedal to ridicule one of his critics with a picture that resembled an antisemitic caricature. I don't think that there's enough evidence to claim that he deliberately intended to evoke that iconography, but he does come across as a bit of an ass who is prone to using edgy humour to lash out at people, which creates situations where he crosses the line into something bigoted. It's generally best not to publicly attack people in personal ways because they said something negative about your business as it may not be interpreted charitably by the general public when you screw up.) That being said, as much as I dislike their near monopoly on the supply of specialty parts for guitar pedals and synthesisers and think it's bad for the industry in the long term, they do put out some good products that can't be obtained elsewhere and their prices do make these things much more accessible to people on lower incomes, so I can't really argue against someone that buys their stuff.

It sounds really nice. No digital sound. Something between a fuzz face (clears so nice enhacing the tubey tone of the neck single coil) and mids enhaced as an mkii but not as fuzzy as a real one ( maybe with humbuckers). Maybe I would prefer to have both separatedly than an hybrid. The mod switch really sounds like a cocked wah for cutting in a solo but that switch may be not practical as a push footswitch or a real wah. This is definitely not a vintage bender circuit since it uses not 2 nor 3 but six SMD (what was that) transistors.

@casanovafunkenstein50902 күн бұрын
It's because they own a factory that is large enough to qualify as a small city in China where they manufacture pretty much all of the specialist parts that the boutique pedal companies are using. They're basically sitting on a monopoly and can get the parts directly from their own factory without a markup, then they're manufactured at a level of scale that no other companies can really match and that allows them to undercut their own customers (though only really with products that are pretty much generic. They don't come after modern designs so much for pedals, but if you're only selling clones of old circuits and not doing anything new to justify your product over the same thing from Amazon for £30 you're going to be in trouble)

I guess in Times when companies like Fender or Gibson make believe that they are curators of a museum, cultural goods, and history, using silly Buzzwords like "Legacy", pretending responsibility to be the keepers of alpha and omega, even spreading through PR a perception of an altruistic duty without commercial intensions, its hard to swallow for some folks that Behringer can make things sound as good, can "keep it real" sound and look wise, at a ridiculous price point, where other ocidental companies can't compete. It's not controversial. It's the fear that they can do as good as we do, maybe better and we are on the way to loose the alpha as we lost the actual omega.

my dislike of behringer is only partly because of his shameless knockery-offery; he's not the first & he won't be the last, & as his fanboys are so fond of pointing out, he stays *just* on the right side of the law. the klon clone has annoyed me, then; not because it's yet another centaur knockoff, not because he's copied the damn look right down to the actual centaur logo being identical, but because he doesn't give a shit about copying other people's IP (whether it's legal or not, it's immoral & lazy) rather than come up with an original design to house the things, & because he's poisoned the chinese slaves in his massive labour-camp factory city. whatever people say he's done for the cost-of-entry (which imho has cheapened music-making to a ridiculous degree), he's a bad boss. & yes, anyone with a bit of google-skill & basic soldering chops could make their own one of these in about an hour.

Funny they made the pedal accurately large (they could have made it much smaller). Can probably get a smaller fuzz from a cheapo AliExpress shop for the same money (or less). Honestly I'm not uptight about Chinese clones. When UK German or US companies clone a pedal everyone's fine with it. But when a Chinese manufacturer clones something, people act like it's an affront to decency. Haha. Well I can't afford an actual Protein, but I do have a Chinese copy and it sounds fantastic. :)
@duncan-rmiКүн бұрын
it's an affront to decency to run slave labour in a poisonous environment & to knock off other people's designs. I don't mind replicas, but there's a line being crossed when you copy the artwork to the tiniest detail, &... you know what? just do a bit of googling about the factory where this stuff is made.
