I had to jump on the laptop to add a reply to this excellent video. I started my decluttering journey about 6 months ago after watching your video with your mother on Swedish Death Cleaning. I started with an overflowing 4 drawer filing cabinet, then my photos, the rest was/is easy (ish). Then tonight watching this list of 100 things to declutter made me realise just how far I've come! As you were going through the list, I remembered....the handbags, socks, swimsuits, underwear, towels, sheets...the list goes on......books, clothes, hats!......goodness, how far I've come! AND IT'S ALL THANKS TO YOU! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I still have the shed, the garden tools, and regular 'house sweeps' to do, but thank you for all the fun, laughter and encouragement to have a tidy, clean, useful home. Love Goldie XX

But Im proud of her. It will take another year to orgnize everything since she wants to donate to credible Outlets, but i think everyone at any age should do this.

Hi Shannon. I'm over 66 years old, and love that you showed decluttering with your mom. I watch a lady with a page called Downsizing Pro. She tells if collectables are worth anything and talks about tales about family intervening and step children just taking what they want, although they were told "NO", not until I'm gone. All things very helpful to me, although I don't have any step children. My main clutter is with my hobby -greeting card making. It has exploded all over my kitchen counter, dining room table as well as the very small bedroom I have. I continued to purchase supplies but not getting rid of much - 1 in, 1 out. Thanks for all you do.

First, I have to say that floral top is great on you and the floral curtain behind you fits so well in front of the wardrobe. Now to what I was actually going to write 😅. Don't forget furniture. Often we declutter a lot of things without thinking about the furniture. If the bookshelf becomes empty, it is easy to fill it up again. Make it a habit to reduce the number of furniture after you declutter a lot of things so that you don't see opportunities to fill them up again😊

Excellent tips. I wish I had been following them my whole life. After 6 kids, 14 grands, and now 21 greats and still going, I have accumulated more than I can handle. Also, I sew for myself and family and do art work. Now that I am almost 90 years old it has become depressing and I don’t have the energy to declutter. My relatives are so supportive, but also burdened with their own responsibilities, so my advice is to start young and keep decluttering to be able to focus on real living.

I have been downsizing for over 20 years. I found a Christian run donation center in a small town outside the large city where I live. They help local families in need by raising money from donations that they sell in their store and online at eBay. If donations are needed by families directly, they are able to pass those things along. (I don't donate to the nationally known centers like Goodwill.) TIP FOR DONATING: I use small moving boxes or shipping boxes to donate items. I label each box with what is inside. I always wash, iron and fold clothing and donate only what I would want to receive. Your idea to donate old towels to pet shelters is a good idea. I use old towels for rags around the house.

We want to downsize in the next year. I have a 5000 sq ft house and want to downsize to a 2000 sq ft house. I’m attacking the basement first. One area at a time. I’m retired now. So I’ll give myself several hours sometimes a full day. Whatever I have time to do. It has to be done so your video was very helpful. Thanks Shannon - I know there are 3 areas in my home that I need to target. Papers/paperwork are a road block for me - something that has overwhelmed me a number of times during my life - I managed to get it all perfectly filed and sent a huge secure bin for shredding a few years ago, but it has crept up on me again. I definitely need to deal with Christmas decorations, garden tools/tools in general, bed linen (again), the clothes that I moved to the guest bedroom closet and haven’t touched since, books - mostly reference, non fiction, history, genealogy (another roadblock), a couple of large kitchen appliances and craft supplies (buttons are an issue for me though - I collect vintage buttons). I definitely need to go through all of our pens and stationery - I run the admin and bookkeeping for our 2 businesses from home and my office definitely needs some work. We have been through our bathrooms in the past year or so, but I think we could do that again. I think I’ll print out your list and highlight all of the areas we need to attend to.

Tip: To clean rubber surfaces that have become sticky due to age just carefully clean with cotton ball or small rag and isopropyl alcohol 90% works best but any is fine. I’ve used this for the rubber on the backs of calculators, handle of a hand mixer, hammers, garage tools, etc.

THROW PILLOWS - A previous video you did about decluttering throw pillows inspired me to get rid of several extra pillows including regular bed pillows that were really in my way and old. SOCKS - When I watched your mom decluttering socks about a year ago that also inspired me to do my sock drawers and try to get rid of ones that get holes. OLD TWOELS/CLOTHES - My husband reuses those that can't be donated for rags when he is working on the cars or other projects. I use some of them for cleaning projects that are really messy so I can throw them away afterwards. PURSES - I used to be a "purse collector". I had so many purses! I even bought them at thrift stores. I have changed my ways! LOL I have decluttered about 80% of my purses/bags. I even had a few brand-new ones with tags still on them that I had for several years and never used so they got donated. BASKETS - I like to collect are baskets. I use them around my house but one day I counted that I had about 100 baskets!!! I decluttered about 25 of them and gave a few away. I still have a lot, but I do use them for various reasons. JACKETS/COATS - I need to revisit those. I got rid of several but still have too many (husband too). BLANKETS - I used to be bad about buying blankets of all kinds especially if they were on sale. I have some that have never been used! i got rid of some but need to revisit blankets. DECOR - I have decluttered a lot in the past few years especially this year. I'm planning on getting rid of more Christmas decorations this year. I don't decorate as much as I used to. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I did declutter pic frames years ago, among other nick-nacks. I just didn't want to dust around them anymore. However, now that my kids are grown, my dad recently passed, and I've lived with a more simple house for a while now....I now want to have picture frames around again. People are the most important things in my life and that is what I want my house to reflect. They bring me joy. So I don't overdo it, just one per shelf and no other nick-nacks. I can't have ANY plants because my cats destroy them (no matter how high I manage to get them, LOL), even fake plants. You'll notice that when your life is less chaotic (children grown up) and you've lived simply for a while, you then find that you have a little more space to bring in some very intentional, meaningful, things.

Minimalism is always different for people who live in places with a full winter season. In Ontario, we need coats and jackets, and I would also advise against having only one daily handbag. In wintertime, we need one heavy-duty handbag that zips tightly, ideally in a dark colour so that it doesn’t show the dirt that snowy, windy weather also brings. In summer, we can have another handbag in whatever style or colour we like.

I used an empty (Large) peanut butter jar to store Sharpies. They don't dry out. I have had them for 8 years and they still work. Yes we use them for projects with the kids.

Puppy potty pads are great for cleaning up large spills, place on spill paper side down, it will absorb the spill in no time making clean up easier and saving on paper towels!

I am not a minimalist but I don’t have several things that are for the same purposes. As an example, the plant pots situation, the ones I have are in use; and if I have a plant that needed to be transplanted I have to make a trip to the store to buy one. I don’t have any of the things that you have shown in this video. Also, I usually get a call from Diabetes Association when they are going to be in my area for pick up, and I would often put together things that are worthwhile for them to collect at least two or three times a year.
