I would suggest getting the things that are classic for YOU and your body type and personal style. It doesn't matter about trends so much if you capitalize on trends that are exactly right for YOU. You can just put outfits together differently to make sure you don't look like you're lost in another decade. Also, and I suspected this would happen, as I have aged my coloring is fading a little bit. So I am checking in on The nuances of my best colors. I used to carry off black pretty well and it's looking like a variety of blues and deep taupes are going to be my new base neutrals. I'm keeping a few of my more vivid deep colors to go with my stack of black leggings because they work in the winter with my black fuzzy boots. But I think those will be on their way out when I find pants/leggings/shoes/boots that work better as my coloring continues to soften further. (I have multiple black leggings because of winter travel and not necessarily having laundry facilities available that aren't going to shrink my clothing). And I'm definitely in the category of someone who has worn out my basics. I am so thankful that they have been such great work-horses over the years... I have babied them with cold water, followed by drying on the hanger with a gentle fan blowing on them. Every now and again, I might toss a piece into the dryer on cold air only to briefly shake out wrinkles before hanging to dry. And I learned a great trick from an Italian who loves to wear linen: when I hang up pants to dry, I use clip hangers on both ends to pull out wrinkles, with the heavier hanger on the bottom where I have the waist. I rarely need to iron anything. That said, all the TLC in the world isn't going to protect a garment forever. Over this past week I have purged out things that don't fit right, things that look too bold like Stark, black and white, and simply colors and patterns that don't feel right to me. And I have identified items that are going to go when I find the right thing to replace them. Emotionally, I'm ready to move them out of daily rotation. Some of them will qualify for yardwork, possibly Sacrificed to create piping on another garment, or something else… If the entire garment is likely to be tossed into the trash at the donation center. And I've got a few things like that, loved by me, but they won't be loved in a charity shop.

After my late husband Steve passed, i sold the house we built and downsized. I had to get rid of my wedding gown, it had been cleaned and preserved and boxed. It killed me to do that as it was such a happy day and a beautiful wedding. But i told myself e had the puctures and video, I could see it anytime. Plus i simply had no room to keep it. I took it to my favorite thrift store and donated it with the headband that matched. But i yold them, whoever bought it had to call me so i could gear how muchshe loved it. The money helped the store and the lady who bought itcalled, she was also a second time bride and loved it! Plus it fit perfectly. Sometimes, decisions are hard to make, but once done we know we did the right thing!💗

That is so sweet! We had a very small house when we first got married, and I couldn't count on a daughter of mine liking a yellowed white wedding gown of a particular style 20 to 30 years down the road. So I advertised in a local paper for a buyer, And found someone who really liked the dress and also the pretty wreath and veil to go with it, and she especially loved that it was in her budget. I loved that she asked me if I was getting rid of the dress because I was getting a divorce😂, But I was able to assure her that I was happily married but that my hall closet was too small. We've been married close to 40 years now, and I wish I had a follow up like you did to know how things turned out for her.

I recently discovered a couple things: 1) If you have lost a significant amount of weight find a really good tailor and save yourself hundreds, if not thousands of dollars by getting much needed alterations on high quality clothing. It's not cheap, but will save you a ton of money over buying new. 2) I was ready to get rid of a black, longer length blazer (which was deemed outdated last season), only to see it featured as "on trend" this season. If it is high quality, I "retire" it and wait a season or two to see. Trends change in a blink of an eye.

As you get older too and your lifestyle changes you realise there are so many items in your wardrobe that are not going to be worn and many brand new and you keep for the “ just in case moment “ . Sometimes it’s just facing reality and then move on . I am in the process of doing that often 😊It’s actually hard and sometimes sad but hey life goes on .

I did a stint in a charity shop sorting donations, and it taught me that if it's the wrong season, clothes get recycled for rags, as most shops have nowhere to store things that aren't going to sell quickly. Now I hang on to stuff until it's coming up to the right time of year.

I really love that so many people like to donate their clothes 😊 sometimes stuff just has to go into the bin. I've helped out at the german red cross and... well, people were donating EVERYTHING. broken stuff, dirty stiff or old underwear. Takes hours to get through hundreds of boxes to get a few usable items. When you donate, you can help just putting in little notes which size the clothes are (in case you cut off the label), this saves a lot of time ❤

You are so right. I have got more clothes for somebody that doesn’t have any clothes. They’re nice and clean spot. Free and worn free. Very nice clothes. Not really expensive but nice. I was thinking about having a garage sale but it’s strange people won’t give you $.10 of garment, but they’ll give three or four dollars for it in town at a thrift store. So I’ve decided to donate. The boxes that I’ve packed a man or sized and marked on the outside of the box. They’re all clean smell good and fresh but but I’ve got more clothes hanging up That was holding on too hoping I could wear and came to the conclusion that I’ll never lose enough weight to wear those and if I do lose weight to go back to a smaller size, I’ll just buy a few pieces at a thrift store lol I hope to downsize so I won’t have near the room. I’ve gotten now which I don’t have enough room. That’s why everything is cluttered. too much stuff for the room that I have. give your things away. God bless you. For blessing someone else. The thrift store I hope to give to give those clothes away or have given now they’re selling $10 a garbage bag full to help with utility bills for those that can’t afford it…. God bless and bless his others. Can’t give God!…❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I just moved into what will be my retirement residence, and knew I had less closet space, so have before the move I got very ruthless in going through my closet and dresser and shoes. It has really helped me have only those things I really like and wear staring at me in my closet! I do have one closet for coats and jackets so they aren’t crowded in and a closet that holds my out of season clothes. None of these closets are large but by purging before the move everything fits well

Great list! I will be adding some of these to my declutter list. I already do this somewhat twice a year, when I switch out my seasonal clothes. I would suggest doing this when you switch out the seasonal clothes instead of just once a year. You are already going through your clothes and you know exactly what you wore this past year. Better to purge these unworn items now instead of boxing them up to have to deal with during the next seasonal change. I find when I switch for the next season, I don't miss what I had already gotten rid of the previous season. This also starts each season with a fresh closet of items you know you wore last year. On items I absolutely love but didn't wear, I may keep until the next cycle, but I limit myself to 2 items. That forces me to really evaluate how attached I am to the item before I pack it away. For shoes and bags, I have a one in one out rule. If I buy something new, I have to choose something to donate. This keeps impulse shopping in check.

If I am considering wearing something but decide to push it aside, I give it a second thought. If I don’t have a legitimate reason for not wearing it that day, I must use it or lose it. I must either pull it out and put it on or pull it out and toss it in the pile. It’s actually helping me decide, because, if not today, then when??

Great video. I have been decluttering a little, but your video made me realize I need to go through my shoes, nightgowns and tee shirts. Love your videos.

Worn-out pajamas, winter coats, and shoes are at the top of my declutter list! Followed by clothes that don't fit, jewelry, and purses. I don't have a lot of time, so I'm going to select one or two categories each month. The first step, though, is to find your video on selling things. Thanks for this content! Very helpful!

Absolutely agree with all of the comments. I have found I have quite a few jeans, yes the style is still current, but I don't need 5 of the same style and I only need one for gardening. My grandchildren have aged, so print tops that hide stains aren't so necessary anymore.

I lost 50 lbs, 20 of it in the last year which resulted in clothes in 4 sizes = 1X, X-Large, Large and Petite Medium. I also lost 2 in. in height as a senior citizen. I worked 45 yrs. and had to be presentable for the public. Purging clothes is a necessity NOW. This has been helpful.

I totally believe in declutterring closets. But, I have kept a few things that are 20-25 years old that still work! Classic, Tailored silk blouses, slacks, coats. Maybe because my shape has basically stayed the same, I still wear these pieces. I have decided to stop wearing costume jewelry except for cute vintage pins for holidays. have gotten rid of too many scarves. I live in a very casual town and I have gotten lazy with "the uniform". But, I try to spruce it up with interesting accessories. You don't need much!

Definitely good advice. Only thing I will not be getting rid of is the promo t shirts. I spend a lot of time gardening and cleaning up after my horses and goat so I need lots of those and tend to wear them right out. I will be getting rid of some coats I think. That is a weakness I have. Yet living in a mainly warm climate they don’t get much use.

Just start small and do one classification at a time. Perhaps you start with your jewelry or accessories. Then start going through your t-shirts and pants...once you get started on it, it does get easier. AND think about how much you're going to love your closet when it's done!

A 60kg weight loss saw me shopping my wardrobe for items that suddenly fit again. I have an expensive 25-year-old dress, trousers & even underwear with tags on that have been wonderful to rediscover & would have been costly to replace. So if you think you may lose weight, please hold off on ditching those smaller favourites. Definitely agree with the other points especially black pants, shoes & handbags. Anything stained, damaged or uncomfortable is gone!

Yes, I just take clothes that fit no more out of my daily wardrobe. I keep things which are in a good estate. Just lost 10kg and went shopping in by boxes. I modified several pieces to make them temporary again and some trousers became temporary again because the skinny jeans got out of fashion.
