The Train Story

Күн бұрын

General Motors EMD (Electro-motive Diesel) locomotives have dominated the non-electrified tracks of India since 1999 when the WDG4 started operations in India. But the WDG4 and WDP4 were not the first EMD locomotives in India. That honour goes to the WDM4 a.k.a EMD SD24! The WDM4 was EMD's offer to Indian Railways against the ALCos DL560 series locomotives in the 1960s. Even though the EMD SD24 (WDM4) was technically superior to the ALCo DL560 (WDM2), EMD could not gain foothold in India because of its refusal to transfer technology. But 30 years later, EMD chastened by its earlier error in Judgement, offered full transfer of technology with its GT46MAC (WDG4) and GT46PAC (WDP4) diesel electric locomotives. Today the EMD siblings dominate the non-electrified diesel territories of Indian railways. This video tells the story of these iconic locomotives in India.

Really good explanation of these locomotives, I learned quite a lot from this! What really interested me was the early EMD competitor with ALCO being preserved at the National Railway Museum, and the issues of running such a long locomotive with the long hood forward - EMD makes locos like that for use here in the states, where it is common to see two or three leading a train, but it definitely makes sense why some of the WDP4s had the second cab added. Good motion graphics as well!

The EMDs were designed for MU’d operations where the long hood forward would never have come into play. In India where the locos are used as single units, the LHF visibility became a problem. IR has addressed this by adding cabs at both ends…In Europe, where single units are prevalent, EMD supplied twin cab units…

There are two reasons for MUs of EMDs: 1. Incase of loco failure, the other loco can take over. 2. Superior acceleration and deceleration so as to speed up trains between single line/heavy traffic sections.
@TheTrainStory
@TheTrainStory 3 жыл бұрын
In the case of the Kochuveli express the MU was probably for loco failure/loco testing. The 2nd option doesn’t seem the case here because other trains on the same route were running with single locos.
@trainfanner47
@trainfanner47 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheTrainStory The second option is being used in zones like SBC (Bengaluru) division of SWR, due to surplus amount of diesel locos available. Examples include: •Jaipur express from YPR (Yeshwanthpur) •KCVL express to MYS (Mysore) •BGM (Belagavi) express from •Rani Chennamma express (To Miraj) •Mayiladuthurai express from MYS (after loco change at SBC) Another reason is that, as a single loco, hauling a 21+ coach lhb rake or 23+ coach ICF rake takes a toll on the loco and reduces it's efficiency significantly.

Nice video. No hard feelings, but love the sound of alcos much more than wdps. And even more, the steam engines. The sound and the look of the locomotive I feel, is key to the journey. Looking at the mammoth steamer, the horn and the sound the engine makes the journey feel complete.Inckudimg the alcos. The sound on acceleration is so awesome. instead of a steamer, Imagine, the grand Indian train driven by a wap. Wouldn't it be great? Well, it saddens me that the waps look like dhabbas. No acceleration sound, no looks nor the horn sound. Zero personality. I feel Its like better to have the train driven by self electrified boggies than to have that dhabba in the name of a locomotive. I mean a local will also do. Ah yes, it's pollution free. But not what I account for when traveling by train. Once upon a time a train lover. It's been almost 7 years now I stepped into a train. Thanks to wdp and wap replacing everything.

U left the story of WDG5 BHEEM. The transfer of technology given for 4000-4500 hp sd-70-mac 16 cylinder 710 engine was used by DLW in Making the 5000 hp 20 cylinder version of the same engine as used in emd sd-80-mac. This engine was tweaked up2 5500 hp and the model is known as GT50AC.

@@TheTrainStory There is also another small experiment of BLW wrt to the WDP4 class. It is the Sri Lanka Railways M11 class, which is a smaller WDP4 with 4 cylinders less 3000hp prime mover, i.e. a 12-cylinder version of the EMD 710 series engines. Not sure if BLW got any support from EMD for that, like they did with the 20-cylinder version. It is also I think the only export version of the EMD based diesel locomotives from India.

Yes right that if GM agreed to share technical aspects to IR then it was the PRIMARY MAIN LINE DIESEL LOCO INSTEAD OF ALCO DL560 ie WDM 2

I think they should stop the following things : 1) Using wdp4 locomotives 2) using freight locomotives for passenger trains and vice versa in any situation. 3) 100 percent electrification. 4) development of wdap5. They should tweek the wdg4 and wdg4d to 6000hp and wdp4b and wdp4d to 4800 HP instead. They should believe that diesel locomotives can haul large amount of goods than electric locomotives.
