This video brought back memories of doing a DIY renovation of a circa 1900 townhouse in Washington, DC back in the late 70s. It had lath and plaster walls and gas lighting pipes still embedded in the walls. Everything was 3x more difficult and took 6x longer than new construction.

At first I thought packing the walls was the nasty job of insulating with fiberglass since I’m from the U.S. “Furring” or “strapping” out the walls is usually what it’s referred to here. There’s really 3 main ways of doing it: ripping tapered strips and planing them (and the studs) to adjust (which is what you’re doing), sistering whole studs to an existing studs (which is the least amount of work but uses more material, changes your layout, & reduces insulation space), or my preferred method: ripping straight strips and shimming them onto the studs. There’s no planning involved, uses minimal materials, less cleanup, and creates a thermal break from the air gap created from shimming. You can even foam that air gap.

I love those little Bosch 12v tools. Lightweight, those batteries stay charged for ages, and powerful for their size. I use the drill and impact driver all the time.

Yes, thats the way we would it in germany too. But perhaps in NZ they have special regulations to do that way.

Generally you can use packers at the top bottom and middle of 1200mm sheet of gyprock. You get them plumb then apply walnut size balls of stud adhesive which will dry and hold the gyprock flat on the wall. In your case stud adhesive wouldn't have been able to pack out such a big difference. So your method was best. Love the channel

That little Bosch planner is brilliant, have had mine a few years. Lightweight but every bit as powerful as the bigger 18v. Great for finishing work and can go in a tool belt pouch, battery life is amazing too!

Loved this exciting episode! Didn’t get to see the full drawing but make sure your new oven is vented. The cabinet didn’t have the 45mm cut into the back. I’m assuming you can get away with the top being open 👍.

Scott- I have that same oven. My experience is that you might need a larger air vent than one shown in the manual (at back of cabinet). Maybe try doing a pryolitic clean before finalizing your install, see if it resets from being too hot. If so, you might be able to grill or vent where you have that white trim board vent it a bit better.

love your channel Scott! just ideas from a gyprocker's point of view when you pack walls, use metal furring channels of either 28mm or 16mm with packers and shoot a laser line at the bottom to align the concrete obtrusion, job will be done with less pain. the load bearing part is taken by the existing frame anyway.

There are indeed easier ways to do it, but in this case it looks like this wall will have bracing plasterboard screwed to it, so the packers need to transfer the bracing strength to the studs.

I have that Planer, it's the bomb!! Get the hoover attachment for it which can also go on either side! The 12v router is also really good. AND... the cylinder style battery which you have also goes in to their laser level, which I think is brilliant. But be careful folks, the 4 amp battery which I have (different shape) will not fit in to the laser but will with all the 12v platform tools. I was Slightly gutted about that.

Hey Scott. As a general rule if you're having your microwave above that oven and building a new oven tower the microwave should be in the vicinity of 1200mm FFL. Make the tower 700 overall deepso as the front edge nearest the bench top sticks out past the bench front edge. The surface the microwave sits on should be flush with the ends with a back the depth of the microwave plus 50mm from the front edge. Any overcupboards to be set back 20mm and 350 deep as is the drawer unit below. This however can be as deep as you want as the oven will be sitting on it. This will allow the oven to vent up behind the microwave as well as allowing the microwave to vent up behind the overcupboards. When the doors and drawer fronts are added all, including the oven front, should all line up. I could do a drawing for you if you'd like showing all approximate dimensions. I build kitchens for a living. I always ask for the bench tops to be 620m, set the cabinet front edges back 40mm, the sides are cut at 555mm, and use 16mm solid backs, except in the case of the microwave bottom and back, which are in 18mm plain MDF spray lacquered in the same colour as the kitchen doors, drawer fronts, and exposed panels and packers. The reason for using these dimensions is it creates a void behind the cabinets to allow for the walls to be out of plumb or with hollows in it. If I can be of any help please let me know. I have the same 12 volt Bosch planer. When I pair it with my 18 volt Bosch vac it's near 100% chip-free And is beautiful for working in finished homes. I use it mostly for fitting doors.

It seems it would have been much easier to knock out the horizontal blocking and scab the side with 2x4 nice and plumb. One on each end and run a line high and one low and just kiss the line with reminders. Then can add blocking as necessary. Wouldn't have to plane or taper anything. If wanted the wall crazy straight you can also do this with metal studs

That would be a bit faster for sure but it would also push the wall thickness out considerably which could be a consideration for the doors and their jam sizes. He is an experienced carpenter so he is probably well aware of your technique, but as I mentioned there are often other considerations that don't immediately meet the eye. I often have to go behind other less experienced guys ripping out their work because they had some genius idea to do something faster but hadn't thought it through properly.

I've got a Bosch corded planer and it has a flipper on it that switches the outflow to either side. With all that fiddly work I'd have been tempted to just replace those wiggly walls with new framing. Renovation is like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates, once you start trying to fix something you never know what you're going to get.

All that remedial work done to make do with the oven and its surrounding trim is a good example of finish renovation work done in the 70's/80's, its taken me 4 years so far to fix all the bad Reno done over those decades. I feel your pain with material shortages. Even materials for insulation like PIR is generally not easy and difficult to find here in nz at the best of times.

I have the Bosch 12v planer. It's an excellent little tool. A bit underpowered for some cases, but has many uses. I recommend getting a 6ah battery for it-you'll get a bit more power, and very long run times.

How do I pack walls? Newspaper of course!....I start by ripping up little pieces of newspaper and add p.v.a glue, sometimes we add glitter or food colouring if you don't have that we have used bread in the past....how does that work you ask? Easy peasy get 3 loaves' sandwich bread..toast bread...extra thick toast bread...works a treat and is waterproof. Cheaper than wood & structural. X

Why not just laminate some 70x35 to the side of the studs? Do one each end, string the wall top, middle, bottom. Put the centre ones in and shoot them off to the line. No planning required

I’m with the people that replied saying that use Furring channels on old studs. Personally think a much better result is to take off the Weatherboards and use Rigid Air Board outside (which also acts as bracing). Insulate between the studs and use furring and standard Gib inside. That way you can get a cavity (using battens) on the external wall. Don’t have to mess around packing (metal gives a better finish imo). Brit here though, so what do I know ;)

had the reverse issue in our old house, the kitchen cupboard wasn't deep enough. We took out the GIB and cupboard back board to make it fit. The oven always over-heated though. We ended up buying a different oven as a result, problem went away.

Been renovating my Manx stone house on the island for a few years now , Was told by an old school joiner here , as most walls are never straight , To lay a string line through the whole wall , using 2 by 1 , then use your packers , with your level to get it right Just saying , but am fan of your channel and love your work 👍

Very nice work...As a remodeler on the east coast of the U.S for over 30 years, EVERY job, seemingly, requires (we call it "packing out") it's very tedious, especially if it's ceiling and walls...But, I've never used my planer for it...Table saw and circular saw...Let the drywallers sort it out...

Hi there Scott, As the older having done a few oven replacements in the past - may I suggest as w'v realised if theres the space as you have - to install the oven on a plynth (raised shelf box) giving everyone safer, better axis&retrieval when using heavy cast iron pots etc.. Isn't it common in New Zealand to also insulate the floor before the concrete or screed is applied? Greetings from Northwest Germany PS: It's interesting how differently in the world walls are leveled and how much time is wasted doing this when it's quicker and cleaner to do the spacing with simple fully threaded screws. If you want, you can fill the space between the slat and the old wall stand with PU foam after you have placed all the new stands in water (spirit level). A side effect of this way of working and this method is that you then have a low-vibration and insulating wall.

New regulations are coming for insulation under the floor. In this case, the packers have to be a solid part of the studs because bracing plaster board will be fixed to it.

I'd just put 2x11/2 laths one either end string line it through and pack out to suit no ripping or planing.. I often just even screwed them and put expanding foam behind them

If you have wrapped cabinetry, having a gap or wood spacer between the oven and the cabinetry can minimise wrap damage. (Need to replace the front of my draw below the oven)...

Above the oven I would have made a drawer instead of just closing that small space, but I guess it´s more of comment on my cluttered kitchen then his workmanship. :D :D
