Eljay's Recap Review: 8595 Takua and Pewku

I love this titan set. It just looks so gosh darn adorable! Pewku's little crab-walk is one of my favorite play features, it looks and functions amazingly! It's the only Rahi that I feel truly lived up to the excellent play features of the 2001 Rahi. It also helps that this is the only set featuring the hero of the MNOG in his Matoran incarnation.

The reason for the blue pins was to make them easily identifiable from the non-axle black pins. Even now modern Lego sets advise grouping parts by color before you start building. The same goes for making the shortest axles red in later sets. It was just for convenience.

I saw Pewku in action in another review. When I saw her "scuttle" across the screen... Oh my goodness, that was cool! One of Bionicle's finest accomplishments in my opinion.

the blue pin-axles are so small they are only a con for a person who cares tiny details too much. The tan ones are used for things that are intended to spin smoothly (helicopter rotors, spinning upper torsos and stuff)

I was completely okay with the mask being a different color. Dunno why, it just didn't bother me. Pewku was HIDEOUS, but the function more than made up for it. The blue pins were made to match Takua's legs, similar to how the tan ones were closer to Jallers, or at least that's how I always interpreted it. They didn't have yellow ones, so they had to choose the closet ones they had. Not to defend the pins, but I'm pretty sure that's why they chose it.

9 years into the future (still no Future Eljay lego Apple yet, thank goodness), and this review reminds me of my younger days when I was super lucky to get all four Mask of Light "titan" sets (this included). However, being in college, able to earn a little money and having full responsability... I'd buy this out for heavy cash in a heartbeat just for both nostalgia and the function of this set (this set and the Makuta set, since both were my favourite in the days). ... I need to come back to TTV again. It's been so long since I've seen the channel grow so big! Great Beings protect me when I have to learn the new members names (and who all is still in the group!). Much love to you all, and happy to see how big the channel has grown!

His colors represent the different levels of heat for fire so I don't consider it off lol. I think the designers were thinking about that when designing takua

I think the Kohli Matoran introduced the blue pins. I just got a sealed Macku and she used blue pins for attaching the head piece to the body. Unless Takua came first.

My problem with Pewku's function is just one: direction. Crabs (includind ussal crabs and puku from the online game) move sideways, not forward. But anyway it's such an incredible build.

Fun fact: in the movie mask of light there’s a scene we’re jaller and TaKuA are traveling with Copaka, and there’s a moment we’re you see copakas pov and there’s bits of the matoran language, if you translate it it said pk usselcrab foreshadowing Pewkus return later in that same scene

I had this set. A bit confusing for my 7-year-old self, if I recall, but I got it eventually. But I don't remember blue pins being an epidemic in Bionicle sets; I thought black and grey were most common. Maybe I'm wrong, it's been a long time since my Bionicle fanboy phase and I don't remember such intricacies of the sets.

Blue pins are cheap to manufacture apparently. Although tan would probably stick out less for this set, blue plays better with the standard colors TLG uses for most sets. Any other color would contrast more. This piece is so common that repainting it per set would be very expensive.

Im fairly certain that the blue pins were part of a campaign by lego to make parts easier to differentiate. Blue for friction pins, tan for free-spinning pins. All axels with odd numbered lengths were switched to light gray to help determine their size compared to similar length ones. Personally I think it was a bad move, the easy-to-read colors only matter once during construction, but they become out of place and ugly for the entire rest of the time you keep the model assembled.

Takua's 2001 form was created by somebody slapping a mask from a Nui-Jaga onto a spare Jaller. Also, try to do better than the dialogue writer for MoL and pay attention to the changed name spelling.
