I worked for Overnite/UPS Freight for over 20 years. I worked dock, city and road over that time. Being a “ road driver” for them was probably the easiest money I ever made but I liked my hybrid job of starting on the dock then doing short pud to finish the day as well. Never having a specific bid route really helped me become a better driver. One day I’d be delivering downtown in some very tight situations another day I might be on an out of town route out in the country . I actually still miss it!

You ran freight at night from hub to hub? What does that pay roughly? I may look for something new and I’d rather be on night work when nobody is around.

I have one more day of P&D here at my terminal and I am back to line haul, only having 9 months experience OTR and very limited experience backing anything via line haul, I gotta say man, I wish these companies would spend some time training us for situations and different types of backs instead of just putting you in a truck and say have at it 😂😂 It’s been a great experience working the docks as well as P&D work, I learned a ton and met some truly fine folks along the way. Thanx Chuck for all you do brother, be safe in your travels and god bless !!!

wow, looks like deliveries in your area are easy-going. In the case of the 3rd delivery where you had to follow the customer to another warehouse, here in Los Angeles area this would be a major ordeal. Receiver can not simply re-route a shipment to another location. First the dispatch needs to be notified of the delivery address change request, then the freight company will contact the shipper for approval of address change, then there might be a delivery address change fee of around $50 per pallet, then, depending on how long this takes, the shipment might go back to the HUB and scheduled for re-delivery on another day, off course that means storage charges for as many days it takes to reschedule the delivery. All in all this little delivery location change can cost the shipper (or receiver) easily a few hundred dollars, depending on how many pallets were shipped.

First stop yesterday was Time Critical Guaranteed. I get the and they have 1 dock with their semi truck parked in it and the only guy who has a CDL won't be back until 1700. I had to pull their truck out of the dock then make the delivery and put their truck back in the dock. Took 30min vs 5min if the dock was open

Some of the p@d drivers and dock workers are not getting 40 hours a week right now. Its slow and we dont know what fall and winter will bring. I believe some some of the dock workers may have quit because i have not seen them in a while. Times are kind of strange right now. Hopefully this downturn wont be the new norm. Be patient and dont make any quick decisions folks just take some deep breaths and think about what to do. You are right some days not bad others you just try and get through it as best you can.
