I got called out on a Facebook page for my baby Eastern musk turtle. (He was the size of a penny when we bought him) I was asked not to post pictures of "illegal" turtles on the page. I called Fish and wildlife and another number that they gave me (can't remember what it was called). Both locations told me, that they weren't really sure if the under 4 inches applies to buying or just to selling. You can't sell them in West Virginia but no one seems to know if you can own them. The law is very non specific in this state.

My friend is gifting me a turtle that they picked up from Florida as a baby. She can’t take care of it and knows I am a fiend for reptiles and inverts so she’s handing it over to me. I live in Maine and laws are confusing about this species of turtle. It’s a yellow bellied slider. Red eared sliders are illegal to own with and without a persons they’re all sorts of banned from being kept in captivity because they’re highly invasive. However… there are no laws about yellow bellied sliders in captivity in Maine that I have found and the state website doesn’t say anything about yellow bellied sliders. Woot woot.

My turtle is also illegal. American turtles were banned in Europe since 2018 and i just never knew it. For people that already had it you simply had to file a notice and make sure it doesn’t escape, reproduce, and don’t dispose of it by freeing them in local lakes.

Preventing families from buying a hazard for young children is a good reason for a law. People would suffer if there was no such law. Less people suffer if it’s followed. It’s actually good!
@cathy47352 жыл бұрын
@@rogeliorodriguez8518 than there should be a law for all animals , no breeds of dogs that bite or have bitten ever. Just go down the whole line of anyone that got hurt by any type of animal and no longer allow them. But, you can have a predator ,thief, murderer, pedophile, drug addicts anyone live in the house right next to you. Just not a baby turtle. If they wanted to make it a law the law should say if you have a child under 16 you can not own a baby turtle.

@@TheTurtleGirl yes I think it could shed some light on how harmless it is to own a baby turtle. It's the parents responsibility to watch over their babies- children. A child can get hurt when you own ANY PET. They pull a dog's tail and it could turn and snap at the child. Be responsible for what you choose to bring in your home. How many times do you think a child put a turtle in their mouth? How many more were bitten by their own dogs?
