TO THE FORUM: My stance on "styles" is this: The minute you think of "style" you are clogging the brain with limitations that can cost you your life. As you know, I have defended karate in the past. I want it to be known that I did it only because the narrative was written by people who did not know what the F they were talking about. That said, I am NOT, nor have I ever been in my adult life in favor of talking "style" in the same conversation as self defense.

Worse than awareness being limited by grappling is the limitation of mobility. You can't move away from the grapplee as a grappler, to defend or escape other attackers... furthermore clinching tends to enable the opponent to clinch back. It only takes one grab of your clothing. Now you can't escape immediately at will.

Excellent advice again, Shifu. I ran into a situation similar to the one you describe. A guy bumped into me when I was walking with my girl on a crowded street one Friday night and was clearly intent on starting a conflict. I was confused because he looked frail and incapable (not that looks mean much) but his friend looked very ready to join in whatever was to ensue. Too ready. I deescalated the situation and walked away “looking like a chump”, but after seeing this video I’m certain that the plan was to hold me in a conflict and for the other to stab me. I live in a city where people will hurt someone just to feel better about themselves, and I suspect it was a jealousy oriented your girl looks better than my girl I’m frail but you’re flashing muscles kinda thing. But you never really know.

It is important for any fighter or self defense practitioner to understand both how and the importance of creating space and turning your opponent. Executing such can involve grappling and/or striking means, depending on the situation. It is the equivalent of a boxer or kickboxer turning their opponent to the ropes, a mixed martial artist turning away from the cage, or a freestyle wrestler turning their opponent in order to avoid or initiate a push-out. This reminds me of the old school 'back to the wall' concept in streetfighting.

I'm not a martial artist!...... but one perceptual advantage i have over 70 percent of the martial artists i've met is i know all too well what REAL violence on the street actually looks like and feels like! ......i live in a place where lots of people are killed in street fights by people with short concealed knives! and rarely is a fight ever one on one! .......that fact alone without me having any formal training is enough for me to know that the last thing i want to do is start grappling with somebody when i have no idea whats in his other hand or how many of his buddies are coming to fuck me up from behind! you perfectly articulated so much better than i ever could exactly why BJJ never sat right with me regarding street defense!......i think a person should learn BJJ, learn it to the degree of being able to defend against takedowns, escape and fight your way back to your feet if the fight does happen to go to the ground! and subduing a person in the right situation!.....BUT i do not believe that any type of grappling should ever be anybodys automatic go-to on the street! and it should never be anybodys goal to go to the ground!! basically uless its 100 percent written in stone that the fight is 1 on 1 and the guy has no concealed weapons, and youre fighting on grass or something, by which at that time if BJJ is your thing, go for it! and you'll probably win!.....unfortunately in real street altercations theres too many things to go wrong!......also im not too keen on busting up my knees trying to leg dive somebody on pavement! and roll around on the ground!!.....it just all feels instinctively wrong to a person whose seen and been on the recieving end of real street violence.

Ashton Richardson: I think you will be a bit surprised about what I say about IQ as will others be. I will say that there is a political motive behind the use and the information on it. While blacks get anxious when the subject comes up, they should actually be proud of their advancement. I am NOT one who thinks the tests are useless. I scored as did my two sisters, in the top 10% of the nation (yes, including whites). That said, there is a very sinister reason why everyone can see that STEVEN HAWKING had an IQ of 160, but it is much harder to find the fact that Black Baseball great REGGIE JACKSON ALSO has an IQ of 160!!! I will also say that the people who generally score the highest which are Asians, pay very little attention to their high scores. Why? Because unlike many whites in America (not as much Europe) the need to justify their place in the world is not by the impression that they are superior. The fact that not even 60 years ago, blacks had their schools BURNED down and given inferior textbooks, and today can boast of Jackson and Micheal Jordan (IQ 155) as well as not so famous people is nothing short of amazing. And no, IQ is NOT the same as intelligence. No serious Neuroscientist believes that today. It does demonstrate skills that are part of intelligence, but it is not. If you would like for me to give an example of why, I will.
@ashtonrichardson3667
@ashtonrichardson3667 4 жыл бұрын
TheUmmahFightCamp I agree with this my research lead to a similar conclusion. I also find that although it measures and defines aspect of skills intelligence it doesn’t accurately define or determine for intelligence either. I read a couple of research papers determining the importance of the language portion and how it measures intelligence and the evidence was a bit weak especially compared to the other portions of the exam. I know some psychologists from what I remember are finding different ways to give the exam that maybe be a bit more accurate. Like spatial intelligence, arithmetic and reasoning. I don’t know if this actually defines intelligence because I haven’t looked into it and these probably could be categorized more as problem solving ability which seems like an aspect of intelligence than intelligence but it’s definitely interesting . My IQ is most certainly room temperature. I definitely didn’t know that both Michaels had extremely high IQs. I’m really looking forward to the project. If the article is published I will definitely pay to read it.

Does Wrestling and Judo also have the advantages of being more fast-paced/explosive and placing more of an emphasis on dominant positions? The faster pace means that maybe you can (maybe/hopefully) neutralize the 1st guy before getting attacked by a 2ed. And the emphasis on a dominant position means you are better able to both pay more attention to your surroundings and disengage fast if possible. But what you are saying about any form of grappling being a poor default definitely makes an extreme amount of sense. Especially about how it takes a lot more of your focus

This is why I love JKD because of the hand trapping and simultaneous block and counters which is not only direct, but simplistic and you end a fight in seconds. If grappling situation does occur, that wing chun root allows you trap(controlling the opponent) before you go for a takedown or submission hold if you decide to do so. In a prison situation(which is just like the streets) I would never wrestle with ANYONE, especially someone I don't know, because seconds matter when you're fighting and a fight can change from milli seconds to milli seconds. Even if no one jumps in for instance, you might win but by the time 30 seconds goes by to lock in an ankle lock or arm bar, you would be getting stomped in the head or shanked like he just pointed out!! All the people who don't understand, are not just people who've never been in real street fights but people who only train for sport and the ring is a controlled environment, and too many people don't get that and that's to his point that most of these dudes typing in these comments on youtube or social media have never been in a fight that wasn't controlled with a ref.

Kenny Lopez: I don't count on ending ANY fight in seconds. It has and can happen, but to assume it...no. I have seen people keep moving forward after being shot with a 380 in the chest! A fight is ended in seconds by KO. If not that, it is not seconds. Lastly, Bruce Lee would not like this jeet kune do. He talked about biting. This stuff about trapping and compound trapping is almost as bad as the bjj "I'll arm bar you" stuff. Cover the head, grab the clothes, spin around, head but or bite into the flesh of the face. Done! No JKD, BJJ, KARATE, BOXING, JUDO. Simple.

@@TheUmmahFightCamp Bruce Lee wouldn't of liked the version of JKD that people watered down by not including Wing Chun as the root(not as a fighting method)which weakens it because you can't always intercept all the time, sometimes you to have block, simultaneous block and counter and use the wing chun closer quarter principles in grappling range which most don't do and don't know how to because they don't use it the way it was intended to be, they use it how they interpreted by the book, instead of analyzing by pressure testing it and trying find the techniques that work best for them. And of course you have to knock them out in order to end it in seconds, but you won't knock anyone out if you don't know how to get power and precision in your strikes while being direct as possible.(And knocking someone out isn't always 1 punch, you create as much damage in the least amount of time because 1 punch isn't enough to always get the job done) Of course there are some people who can take good shots and keep coming forward but timing and precision can drop anyone if you have the correct structure, techniques, and know where to hit.(And most people don't) All depends on the situation, who you're fighting, how you're being attacked, where the fight happens etc. etc. So many different variables.

@TheUmmahFightCamp 4 жыл бұрын
@@kennylopezjeetkunedo5555 : lol! That is my issue with all this stuff about style: "So many variables". When you have "so many variables" that is a problem. The brain needs to have a simplified method and compound trapping and all that stuff is not what the brain needs. When punches unrehearsed start flying, you would be lucky to get a simple trap. Anything more complex is not likely. And Wing Chun has to be modified much to work.
@kennylopezjeetkunedo5555
@kennylopezjeetkunedo5555 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheUmmahFightCamp Jeet Kune Do techniques are simplified and simplicity is actually part of the JKD concepts.(Simplicity, Directness, and Non Classical) As for compound trapping, that all depends on how you train it. If you're sparring exactly how you do your drills, than you're training in it a rehearsed way. Compound trapping drills are still important though because you need it to train the muscle memory to develop contact reflexes and sensitivity, but you're obviously not gonna fight that way and anyone who does try to fight that way doesn't understand the purpose behind it and that's where the teacher should be explaining that to them. I've never had a problem trapping but the traps I use are after I block and hit, or if I see an opportunity but I don't go looking for it, I allow it to just happen on it's own because that's the only way it will happen because you'll never have a perfect situation and nobody is ever gonna do what you want them to do, so you take whatever is there when the opportunity presents itself. Remember, it's the person behind the art that matters, not the art itself. I've never had a problem using JKD techniques yet in unrehearsed situations and that's because I always pressure tested everything I learned. And Wing Chun was already modified when Bruce Lee developed JKD. Why you think he added other elements with the Wing Chun like the footwork from fencing and boxing? Because he knew Wing Chun by itself is mostly effective in close quarters, but when you have space, than another structure is needed to be able to close distance and have more mobility. You just have to train and do the specific drills necessary for it to be as effective as it was designed to be. Sparring is important but the type of drills you're doing are also important. Remember, it's the small details that matter and make a big difference.

@@kennylopezjeetkunedo5555 : I still say that when the mettle hits the pavement, there is no time for many of the drills popular in JKD.

I think in this day and age many people have come to the conclusion that you need both grappling and stand up striking skills. This is why I don't diss Karate or Kung fu styles. You still need to know how to kick and punch. I like BJJ but you simply don't see anyone in MMA competition today who only knows BJJ. Most fighters are more well rounded nowadays. The Royce Gracie you saw in 1993 wouldn't last long in today's UFC.

Anyone who thinks BJJ is good to use (primarily) in a street fight lacks common sense. Knowing some submissions and reversals is good, but BJJ is great for competition against other BJJ practitioners, not for the street.
