BRUCE LEE nor CUS D'AMATO would train YOU! (The reality of great teachers)

This video was inspired by a sight I saw almost 10 years ago. I went into a gym where trainers I had never heard of or seen before were training "fighters" while Ray Lampkin (a man that fought ROBERTO DURAN) was in a far corner teaching a young kid how to jab! Today, men who claim they want to train have a personality that few great teachers would tolerate. This is my advice to them. UNCUT and TO THE POINT.

This is the total truth. Discipline, knowledge makes the best trainer. When I boxed when I was younger, my coach was in the military and he was hard on me.

love your analogy about making a great fighter is not a painting it's a sculpture The karate I was taught was very conservative. Sensei said it consisted of grabbing the gi punching the body and sweeping the leg. Not flashy but all of us could do it as our go to techniques

Salaam coach. I agree. A bubbly personality shouldn't be the deciding factor. My current coach who I've been with for over 4 years is a wealth of knowledge. At times I've been close to quitting on him because of what I see as his personality flaws; e.g at times he speaks to me as if I'm a child (I'm a grown man). For the most part he's actually a great person, and I'm glad I've not let how he speaks to me terminate our teacher student arrangement, as I've grown immensely in my ability to defend myself and also as a person. Blessings from London.

TO THIS FORUM: USMAN does his thing to COLBY COVINGTON and yes, I am happy about that! The problem is this: that white man fights with a BROKEN JAW and shows he is one of the best fighters in the UFC, yet I cannot cheer for him because like so many like him, living in America stymies his moral and ethical growth. Until the primitive idea of a great America is a white America is seen for the moronic ideology it is, whites no matter how well dressed or spoken will be of a primitive mind. Enough!

My sensei Sam McGee loved kids . And because he loved them he trained them HARD and did not baby them. I recall one time this kid was under so much pressure sparring that he was crying hysterically but still throwing punches Sensei did not comfort him or stop the match. When it was over he said Of rather see you crying and fighting than running and folding.

I love Bruce Lee and he is my hero, but he primarily used his students more as training dummies to work his techniques and get better. Its no different than great athletes not making great coaches because their expectations are way too high, and can mot relate to the needs of the average human without great abilities. What makes Freedie Roach an effective coach is because he was a limited fighter and knows what it took to improve because of his great coach Eddie Futch. And when these coaches train gifted fighters it will take them to the next level.

A smart teacher will use their students to practice and as a dummy. My teacher does it with me. Nothing wrong with this as long as they are TEACHING their students, and aren't abusing them.

Rollo Pollo Bear: Wrong on most that you said actually. Since I am old enough and have studied the psychology of performance, here are the facts in-depth: 1) ALL teachers that are able-bodied should get into the training themselves. I do and my students learn fast that way. 2) If Bruce was sadistic his students would have been injured. He and they were not in large numbers- if at all. 3) Freddie Roach trained MANNY, COTTO, and others with INSANE work habits! THAT is why he trained them. He said himself that James Toney was the best fighter he ever trained and what happened? He let Toney go because he was disruptive and did not want to do road work. 4) Eddie Futch let more fighters go than he ever trained! He was not one to play around with. 5) People like Magic Johnson and Sugar Ray Leonard stopped teaching NOT because they wanted people to be natural talents, but because the people did not have good work ethics. Finally, people like Micheal Jordan and Kobe Bryant WORKED from morning to night on ONE shot! What all great athletes and teachers know is that hard work has no substitute.

I did not know what true martial arts discipline was until i started training shotokan karate with my second karate instructor. He was straight out of the military were he learned his karate and he taught at a warehouse free of charge,so it was his way or the highway. To say he was a strict disciplinarian and a perfectionist is a understatement. Those who stock it out became great karatekas and very discipline people in society. It is that discipline that has carried me through every obstacle i have encountered in my life.Thank you very mush sensei James Pool R.I.P.

Already 1 dislike? This fixation with personality is what bothers me about Boxing Promotors and Fight Fans as well. All smaller Promotors care about is how many Instagram followers you have because the responsibility of Fighters today is not fighting but selling tickets. It seriously broke me as a man and made me question the entire sport to learn that an outspoken desire for risky fights against winners with high KO records instead of "Star Building" by fighting paid losers gets you labeled as a problem amongst Boxing Promotors today. I don't know if MMA is any better in that regard, or if it's just that there really aren't enough people willing to pay to see live fights outside of Vegas and the largest cities on the coasts.

MMA is the same way but even worse.MMA fights are sanctioned by boxing commissions for each state.I've known a few BJJ black belts that turned into pro MMA fighters and can barely get fights. Here in Florida, there were an MMA promoter scamming pro fighters out of their money (last I heard of that situation, the same promoter left the state). Personalities & looks sell fights nowadays. These promoters (the UFC especially), in order to make a profit, basically have to appeal to the masses, most of whom know almost nothing about fighting, let alone MMA.

I am 26 years old and humbly can admit that I respect your age and wisdom you have, but may I ask a question. When does a student draw the line from a great teacher “personality?” I am not so sensitive that I cannot handle harsh discipline but at the same time I have enough self respect that don’t allow ANYONE speak to me with a disrespectful tone or speech because I believe respect goes both ways. So I would like your opinion. When is the line drawn that you tell a great trainer “excuse me but you are not gonna talk to me with a lack of respect?” Character and respectful speech go both ways, should it not?

Noah Knight: Great question! If the teacher insults you by calling you out of your name, let him know you are not taking that nonsense! NO question. What I am talking about is pushing you to do what he knows you can do, expecting you to be on time, expecting to NOT get challenged, expecting you to practice when you are not in the school. All the things I think you agree with. But certainly he must treat you like an adult. Thanks for asking rather than assuming. Be well, S

TheUmmahFightCamp That makes perfect sense. Thank you for your generous and wise words. I am all for being pushed by an instructor to reach above and beyond in the martial arts, as a warrior and life scholar. I currently go to college full time in the Bronx and my Sensei teaches in Brooklyn during my class times, so unfortunately I can’t train with him till I graduate.

For me these mentioned instructors are a throwback to the ages of conquest. The people today have forgotten, on the whole, that fighting is brutal, true no sport fighting - When I left high school in 99' I went to the Marine Corp because I felt like life was too cushy. As the saying goes, "soft times make soft men"- and when there are no "battles", the perception of martial arts (or sciences as "I" like to approach them) can be distorted. Have you had any interaction with Masters Victor Moore, Sijo Steven Muhammad, or any other (so-called)- black masters hidden from history? Thank you again. - one more thing, do you have a video on the "Black Murderers Row" boxers- I believe that your insight on that subject would be most appreciated.

I appreciate your concept of loyalty and sticking with a genuine instructor. However, in my experience the time may come when you need to move on. If you are a sincere student who has trained for a while you will know when that time comes. Of course that time may never come. Just my 2 cents.

I am somewhat of a Bruce Lee historian. He used so called students to test out his concepts, but when he had access to real fighters he would focus more on them including Mike Stone, Joe Lewis, Bob Wall, and Chuck Norris. And Cus heavily favored Tyson. He was the fighter he waited to train all his life and lived as long as he could to see him get good.

@@TheUmmahFightCamp "listen and shut the F up" That F word, that way talking and behaving....It is not suitable to all humans... There is a lot of truth in many things you say that is why I listened. But if you want to pull people in even the "right people". I believe positive approach is better. I was a paratrooper slept in the mud in the rain I lost friends in battle I did grow up in a difficult neighborhood and many people had bad mouth. I try to be in peace of mind and look at the world in a positive way as long as I live.
