I started karate back in the early 80's. I am 53 now. When we trained back then it was for fighting. I lived in South Central LA. I got knocked out and knocked out fellow practioneners. As I got older and wanted to continue training I started see the rise of the so called Mc dojo. I was in the military and moved around and it got harder and harder to find a true self defense school. I reached rank of 3rd degree black belt in Kempo but stopped looking for a place to train because everything got so watered down. I recently found your channel and love what you are doing about practical applications. I also like how you drop knowledge on the history. Please keep it up

Yo this is insane, literally, so I throw my blows with the principle of going from soft to hard. Or like water flows from loose to crashing which gives me a real nice snap on punches and kicks (learned the principle from my pops) I was literally experimenting with my whole body movement to gain that same sort of speed and I was using these same principles. Albeit I didn't know they were karate principles. Love your channel, looking forward to more karate breakdowns, always seeking to learn more on the martial path. Thank you sir

I can't tell you how many people were surprised when I told them that GSP's base is Karate and Wrestling. Most of them think his base is kick boxing and bjj. Side note: What's your thoughts on the Wilder vs Fury fight.

He does have a Karate base but after that he got into BJJ and actually holds a black belt in the art, then that led him to wrestling

@@gyrox0031 True but GSP uses wrestling (combined with karate) to get his opponents down and keep them down. Most of GSP's wins are via decisions (ground and pound).

@@gyrox0031 : Since this channel is not ran by someone who makes a living off of you tube, I can afford to be truthful. At that, here are the facts: GSP, in his prime was NOT a black belt in BJJ. He was a purple belt. Add to that what the EYES see-WRESTLING. GSP has been known for many years as MMA's best WRESTLER. THAT is what you see when he fights as is the case with 95% top MMA fighters.

@@TheUmmahFightCamp I'm well aware of that, I was just pointing out that he does also do BJJ, they way the original commenter worded it, it sounded like he has no BJJ training at all, which isn't true

GSP got a karate black belt before he was 12. Once he learned about BJJ and wrestling, he focused his attention there.

masha Allah coach you really master so many type of martial art; Boxing, Wing Chun, Karate, I wonder if you also train in BJJ, Wrestling and Muay Thai also. People trashing Wing Chun like crazy but I heard Tony Ferguson uses Wing Chun technique in his last fight there are so many things to dig and learn. What I am worried is that, when there are no young martial art practitioner step up and show how traditional martial art can compete also with the current Boxing, BJJ, Wrestling and Muay Thai mixed up, people start to leave traditional martial art while there can be so many thing that you can learn there. And perhaps maybe boxing is not the best way to protect yourselves, because I found blocking knuckle punches with the way boxer block punches, especially the way they block hook, it is not even really blocking it just absorbing the punches and the shock with your hand, it can be effective with gloves but without gloves you will still get hit hard, harder if the opponent larger and stronger than you, they maybe even can crush through my block.

What an interesting time we live in now. 60-80 years ago, which isn't too far, you would be called crazy if you said that you witnessed a fully bearded American Black Muslim Kuro-Obi, in Karate Gi performing Kata! Martial arts transcending man made barriers, borders, ideologies.

When i learned karate in the 70 s the ckasses were NOT big because karate was dangerous. Id routinely come hone with injuries. Sparring was mandatory and full contact from the neck down. No gloves. We were not permitted to punch to the face but we were allowed to kick thete. So yiu could potentially get hit with a spinning back kick tobthe head. I was knocked out by that technique. Also if you DID get hit with a punch ti the head you were encouraged to suck it up and endure it

@@TheUmmahFightCamp people skip out on Silat ground fighting and Kali. BJJ wouldve never got so popular if the judoka from japan didnt send their students to live and teach overseas. They migrated just for that fact. Silat and Kali has striking, clinching and takedowns with submissions and destructions on the ground. The crazy thing is these arts are thousands of years old but yet have the Striking to Takedown techniques mastered. Modern MMA evolved on its own but ir they had Silat or Kali as their base to begin with, we wouldve got further a long time ago! But it is what it is

@@bobm3250 : Good points. I do believe though that because of its innate rules of execution, wrestling would still prove Superior. The reason wrestling is king is because it simply is more ballistic as a rule. The response is not to "flow", but to hit the point quickly with power and speed at the right time leaving little to no time to defend. The flowing of other arts make them easier to defend.

I just want to say any Black Male who grew up in the streets of Philly like Brother Carman and is still alive and well, already has proven Street Wise Combat Credentials. Add to that Brother Carmen has Old School training in Boxing, Karate and other Martial Arts that he does'n't even reveal. Furthermore he's a strict disciplinarian-which means he can analyze other MMA participants & boxer's skills and concepts - and then apply his wisdom and knowledge in a real street combat situation. Anyone out there who thinks he's a fraud-is just totally ignorant-especially individuals who have not grown up in the inner city!

Next, the fact that you are talking about being in some MMA league tells me that you are a white hater who thinks Joe Rogan is a fighting God lol. listen bitch, I do not play with people like you. My credentials are REAL fighting. NOT sport. I teach people to hurt people as quickly and as much as possible when they think they are threatened. Now if you think your BJJ and medals can hold up, make an appointment. My last student just beat trial for attempted murder after he beat up a man for punching his sister. THAT is what I do, faggot.
