I'm not sure what the visitor numbers have been in recent (normal) years. But, on the first of my visits over 40 years ago, there were only a handful of tourists in the place. Stunning to have the run of the place pretty well to myself and the slight dilapidation of that time allowed you to see all the different construction methods. A lovely place in a beautiful setting just a short walk from the train station in the town with the appropriately medieval name of Craven Arms.

Thanks for the great comment! I’m quite fortunate that my job is a history teacher, so I get to talk history for hours each day! Hopefully one day i’ll be able to retire and tour castles full time haha! Thanks again :)

This video was great. But I have to ask, was this footage filmed recently? Or sometime else in the year? I ask because it's the dead of winter (here especially) and there is green grass everywhere and nary a peck of snow. I ask this as well because I have no idea how weather fares over there compared to here in Newfoundland.

Thanks for the great comment man. The footage was filmed around 3 weeks ago. In the UK, we rarely get snow. This usually comes around February and we had some of this last week as we’ve just had two storms. Usually during winter the most extreme weather we get in the UK is heavy rainfall. If you come and visit sometime you’d see how the weather is rather different. During summer it stays rather mild, however we do have some weeks in July/August when it is rather warm. Last year we had 40 degrees Celsius on one day.

Yeah definitely man! I’ll have to pop over for a visit. I love Norwich, it’s such a great city, family holidays used to be in Norfolk every year so we’d always visit the city but rarely pop into the castle. The chips in the market place are great!

shadiversity has a great video on the evolution of castles. long story short, you needed a permit from the king to build a castle or even a fortified wall with crenelations and a fortified manor house was as big as you could without permission.
