Today we return to one of the hottest trends of the last few years-bronze diving watches-and finally, one that has captured my heart. But this is no ordinary dive watch! This is the legendary Superman by France’s premier watchmaker Yema.
This military-issued automatic dive watch has been reborn as a GMT to take on new adventures. While previously reviewed bronze divers didn’t entice me enough to pull the trigger, this bronze Superman has changed my mind and has subsequently landed on my wish list. Join me for an in-depth review, including why this is one of the most compelling new releases of 2020, how it compares to my Rolex GMT Master II "Pepsi" and everything you need to know about bronze watches.

I actually own a Yema Superman. The Armee De L'Air special edition in 41mm with the house movement, but not the GMT complication. I will say these are easily the most underrated watches on the market. I have hardly worn any of my other watches for the last 2 months and the watch has only maybe lost a minute in that time. The watch is extremely well built with a great feel. It turns heads with watch nerds and its a brand I have yet to encounter anyone who has heard of them. The bezel lock is a little silly, but it is unique. It's a rare piece, at least in North America, and it wears like a more expensive watch. If you get the 41mm the lug width is 20mm. That was a necessity for me, because I only keep one size of straps on hand for simplicity. The down side is ordering out of France. You will get the joy of paying the import duty on top of the price, so keep that in mind. I also cringe to think what servicing a house movement Yema will be like someday.

TGV thank you so much for reviewing this piece! I was smitten with it the moment you shared a preview on your chat with Marc and managed to place an order for it on the kickstarter - cannot wait till February! I too loved the fact that while it has hints of the Tudor/Rolex to it, it had it's own unique design cues, brand history and character as well! While I love the Rolex GMTs, I have been looking for a relatively affordable GMT for a while and did not want a straight homage either. This would be my first 'expensive' watch and I have my fingers crossed that the servicing won't be too difficult. Lovely video as always, and thanks for shining a light on some of these brands I might not have found about otherwise!

Yet another outstanding video from TGV! I recently received, direct from Yema the Heritage Navygraf and fell in love again with the brand. I have a Sous Marine from the 70s too.. Naturally, I was “over the moon” when I received the KS offer ...and put in my order for the watch you reviewed. Next week will be dial color and size configs etc. I was leaning towards blue but your excellent review has me thinking black now.

Kudos on this video. I haven't viewed your channel in quite a while and this format is markedly different from those in the past. You deserve loads of credit for taking the time to research and put together all of the video elements. You'd be hard-pressed to find other channels devoting 23 minutes to a watch profile. I am here because I just purchased the maxi dial Superman Worldtime with steel bezel today, and I am chomping at the bit to take receipt of it. The totality of elements in this model are so satisfying that it defies logic, since most brands are keen enough to either put desirable elements in different models (but not all in one), or make you pay through the nose for what you really want. The price point made my decision for me.

I’ll tell you this little story. I started collecting watches a month or so into lockdown. I watched a range of KZbin videos including The Urban Gentry. I happened on an Urban Gentry video where you were talking watches, culture and stuff. I thought what is this guy on about, I tuned in for watch reviews... 6 months later I consider your reviews the most honest, balanced, entertaining and importantly the most enriching. I learn something every time, history, trends, and you have that certain gentry style which does not suffer from any form of male sexism. Bravo!

Thank you for a great review, nice to see this version as I do not really know if I like the black or blue version best. And also, I find that 19 mm is OLNLY a problem if you need a bracelet, and for this you wont, and for the steel versions you get it with the watch. Almost all 20 mm rubber, leather and canvas straps will fit. I now have 2 (soon 4 with the 63 and the GMT) Superman watches and the 19 mm lug width is not a problem at all. I recommend using 18 mm nato straps for the extra vintage vibe. Keep up the good work!

The GMT is my favorite complication, having it no less than twelve watches from a range of brands. I'm glad to see you covering some lesser known brands like Yema. When you get to covering Longines in the future, consider their Conquest GMT, a variant of their Conquest. Another brand to look at some time are the Certina, one of the Swatch Group on the same tier as Hamilton, Mido and Tissot that tends to be ignored. Enjoyed this video about the Yema, highlighting the brand.

As always, very nice intro editing with all those images referencing. Cool that you got to see the Yema Superman, a brand you love. I tried to get that bronze version too but with the blue dial but they when out so fast. Still could got a hold of a stainless/bronze green dial version. Not as beautiful maybe, but the aging process intrigues me. I also find it class that they made it in two versions, depending on your wrist size and that they give you two bracelets with them of different materials. A nice touch. As for the "Pure Class" translation, word for word it wouldn't make much sense. But maybe "La Superman Bronze, c'est la classe !" would translate the thought you have about it.

I own a Yema, I'm in love with their designs and the brand is getting a lot of attention as of late, but there are some things that really rub me the wrong way. Forums are full with people complaining about horrible customer service, numerous quality control issues with the Navygraf, watch service and repairs only in Morteau. Then there are the plastic movement holders or the fact that Yema launched the Flygraf this summer and only two months later they launch their new improved movement, so early adopters like me are stuck with a watch with the outdated MBP1000... That's not cool Yema!
@rwheller
@rwheller 3 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. I too was a customer of the first Flygraf M1 and was disappointed that Yema released the watch when they clearly knew that the improved YEMA2000 movement was on its way. I contacted them only to be told there was nothing they would do and if I wanted the updated movement I needed to pay for it.... Safe to say I won't be buying another Yema if this is their business model which is a shame because I really like my M1.
@matslundgren1632
@matslundgren1632 3 жыл бұрын
Be proud of your M1 and wear it in good health, and as many have written on the forums it is probably the small batches of the MBP1000 that will have the best value in the long run as it was the first in house movement. And also, I know some people have asked Yema about servicing and they admit that the MBP1000 is so similar to the 2824 that you could probably treat it like such and service it locally. It is an ETA homage you know :)

Gotta say, this has got to be one of my favourite intros ! Would you be open to talking a little bit about how you make them and how and why you learned etc. In a video ? That watch is incredible to.

I’m from Besançon, and I’ve been to Lycée Jules Haag (watch school of Besançon) such as my grandfather and my uncle. I’m very proud that you get interested by brand like Yema, and all the mechanical watchmaking héritage my city has. Regards Hugo

Top quality review, I enjoyed it very much. I was interested in the watch and thought about adding it to my Superman Heritage Blue, Navygraf and Rallygraf. But the bronze version is not my cup of tea, but apart from that a stunning time piece. Greetings from Hamburg and stay safe everyone. 👋😊

Hello from Malaysia! Already a proud owner of vintage Glycine Airman Special, I am so excited over this Yema Bronze GMT. I have a 7inch wrist and now having headache over picking which size, 39mm or 41mm..... and Black or Blue dial! Thank you for the wonderful review!

Yes, the metallic scent that bronze watches have. No other alloy used for watches does that. This is an entirely new dimension to your watch experience. I have a Tudor Heritage Black Bay Bronze and it was the first thing I noticed. Love it. No, complaining about the lug width. If after market providers can a produce straps in even sizes then then can do so in odd sizes. It would be like asking Picasso to “make that painting a little bigger so I don’t have to buy a custom frame” (I know he’s dead). The symmetry of the watch is vastly more important than pandering to stubborn strap makers refusing to service the community. Yes, I pressed like. Love you mate. P.S. Received a Grand Seiko SBGN001, my first GMT. Get a GMT you will love it.

I have one on it's way this February from the Kickstarter campaign. I already have a Navygraf and a Superman Heritage Blue, I couldn't resist the low Kickstarter pricing. I have had a Bronze Glycine Combat Sub for a couple of years now that I really love, it has developed a dark dull finish much like an old copper penny that I really like. If I wear the watch often, the patina wears off the sharp edges and points on the case slightly, giving it brighter highlights that really add to the look. If I had wanted to keep the watch looking shiny new, I think just giving it a light polish with a soft cloth periodically would do the trick. To get the extreme green corrosion that you see on some bronze watch cases, you need to make an effort, exposing it to sulphur or vinegar of other substances that massively accelerate the "patina". I tried it out when I first got the Glycine, decided it wasn't for me, and easily polished the watch to it's original, gleaming state. I also like the metallic smell of the bronze, although many don't. It smells like old copper coins.

Love my Superman GMT with the green bezel! Great everyday watch and built to handle the elements as well. Agree, 18mm is the better choice for strap size. The current 19mm is the down side but Yema does offer some good, strap choices on their website. Great review!

Great review. Some of the newer Mido Ocean Star pieces offer similarly good value too, though not with an in house movement like this. Been looking at an Ocean Star Diver 600 COSC or the GMT as my beater watch

I have the 2020 yema superman bronze black with the black bezel. It looks really good and I like pretty much everything about it. The nato strap it comes with is a bit lacking and feathers out. Although that gives it a bit of a rugged look and feel. I quite like that. Its a bit like underselling it. On the other hand it adds to the adventurous and military history of yema. To be fair it comes with two straps, but I don't like the black rubber one. Might upgrade the strap some time but for now I'm very pleased overall. Nice review as always and I can really recommend this watch to anybody who wants an automatic watch in that price range. It's my first automatic watch and after almost one year of daily wearing it I still catch myself staring at it and admiring it's beauty.

Wonderful video as always!!! Enjoy videos like this providing information on not so well known brands. Being a Hamilton fan will there be an upcoming review of the new Converter Auto Chrono? Given your love for the Navitimer and being one of my grail watches, the new Hammy does seem to have done a good job of being a potential alternative!!!

Nice video, and very gratifying after I backed the Kickstarter at €750 for the GMT. I will select the 41mm, which is still only 49.5mm Lug 2 Lug. I can’t decide between blue or black. Whilst black offers more strap combo’s blue works with white & blue shirts etc, and jeans. Can’t wait to get it soon after my Riese Field watch in green arrives from that Kickstarter. It’s going to be a great Feb.

Hi TGV I’m surely in love here! It’s ticking several boxes for what I wish for in a new watch. The GMT function (-can’t afford the king, the Rolex GMT...) the bronze finish and that elegant yet futuristic Yema case. And with a brand new in-house movement - surely an original piece... Hard to decide between the grey or the blue version. I think that the grey version, though more “boring”, will look better in a few years time with a patinaed case. But....?!? Anyway, we’ll probably have to wait for a while, the first portion is already sold out😊 Thanks, been waiting for this review. You’ve been fast, but as always a very professional and in depth video. Keep up the good work👍

@Peter Charron That might be😊 But I still think it will match a brown’ish/green’ish patinaed case more. A matter of personal opinion off cause....
