A gem of a 2 volumes study. Don’t ignore volume 1. The look at first will be my gosh what thick & Dense tomes. Just start reading. You will be amazed. Just enough maps and the story flows well.

Love Scott. Remember seeing him on those civil war shows from the 90’s and 2000’s, and he had no trouble getting chicks in his early days I am sure

No one mentions Joseph Harsh 's books anymore. Maybe because he focuses on Lee and the Confederates.

No, the ANV could not have been destroyed at Sharpsburg. Civil War armies were incredibly durable (the infantry point is sound, but not the entire story) and no major field army collapsed during the war until 1865. Morale had to utterly fail to achieve that result. Any move that might have gained a cauldron-like advantage would have merely prompted a retreat. Lee could have been smashed harder. He could have been forced to retreat (which, as described, would have been terrible for him). But not destroyed, not anymore than McClellan, Hooker or Meade could have been destroyed.

The South started the war over slavery. People take the North's point of view when they say it wasn't over slavery but over-all it began over slavery in the new territories. Lincoln merely took advantage of the cause.

I've known people who still insist it was the south defending their states and states rights from an aggressive oppressive north, they still don't want to acknowledge how central slavery was to the whole thing lol

@@FlameQwertLeave the Union...it matters little why. The States are soverign and they could just do it. Since they were dragged back into the union by the sword, the Republic died and we became a forced Nation State. The founders warned us that tyrants such as Lincoln would try to do what he did.

Slavery was the cause but it was the idea of states rights. Very similar as the abortion issue, gun rights, or the immigration issue. The South leans to the right on all these issues
