Thank you for this great video! One tipp which I would like to share here is that you can actually reduse the anchor-points in a very comfortable way: Select your path > then go to Object > Path > Simplify

Instead of deleting a lot of anchor points when you use the width tool and expand appearance, You can right-click on the object and click on "simplify" and scale the number of points just till it retains its shape. Then manually delete the few ones left. That's what I do. Don't know if it helps. Amazing Tutorial by the way!

you can also do the following for tracing: 1. make the image greyscale/grayscale (mode change in photoshop) in order to be able to colour/color it in illustrator using a swatch of your choice, so for example you could make the image orange. No need for opacity change. You can also set the layer to dim image to your liking by double clicking the layer where the image is kept (in the layer panel), this double click gives you the layer options....a template option is also available in there too.... 2. put the image on its own layer and lock it. 3.make another layer for the actual tracing and then set the layer to keyline mode by control-clicking that layer's icon for visibility (in the layers panel). this means that, in my example, you will trace black lines that are super thin (regardless of zoom level) against an orange image - plenty contrast. this method works well for tracing images at full opacity and having the best contrast for following detail.

@@gendengben8258 i am not able to make a video at this time but just try each point in isolation and you should be able to understand the process....try placing grayscale images in Illustrator and applying different colour swatches to them.... then try making layers with some set to key-line mode and others to preview mode i will try screen capture at some point but i have an ancient computer

Thick-to-thin trick using the simplify feature to automate anchor removal - Say for instance you want to use the the width tool that was mentioned @5:20... You can remove all the extra anchor points that illustrator creates after expanding by going to object > path > simplify. This feature allows you to remove extra anchors and preview how your shape will look before you save it. This way you don't have to remove each individual anchor point by hand you can automate it with the simplify feature.

good option for tracing is to place the graphic, double click its layer and select the template option. this reduces the opacity to 50% by default and locks the layer

I have a vintage decal from the 1950's that on my 1950 Larson Crestliner aluminium boat that I'm restoring. Your tutorial will help me trace and make a digital copy of this decal. Thank you. The decal is 8.5 inches x 10.5 inches. Can illustrator output actual size in a pdf, then printed to vinyl or silkscreen actual size?

This video is as close to what I'm looking for to help me with my project, that I have found. What I've got is an old small image of a business logo which has has a specific word font; spacing between letters and words, and a few big letters for the abbreviation (that makes the logo more than just words lol). I just want to find a way for Adobe to read that image and basically make the colors editable and maybe sharpen up the design, is that wishful thinking?

If you double click on the layer the sketch is on and check 'template' it'll lock and put down the opacity by itself. No need to manually do that. Cool tutorial!
