With water allready in the fields, ever consider using chicken tractors in the fields to raise broilers and sell all summer on a rotisserie and fresh. The grass hay fields would explode.

On the last picking of peas I just go ahead and pull the plant and turn it upside down and stand up and pick the peas off. They are easier to find and them just throw the plant down to decompose after you get all the peas off. Saves your back a bit too.

My crops other than herbs are all behind because of a combination of late spring, lack of rain and poor air quality. Your cukes look great! And that green lettuce was HUGE. I watched Luke at MIgardener today and he was talking about how great your channel is and how great all of you are. He mentioned how you were talking about how the air quality was affecting your crops. I've said it before and I'll say it again and again, Callie is the most adorable little girl. Oooops, big girl.

How would you like to garden all the time in a completely fenced in garden, including bird netting over the top? Thats how we do it at the garden i volunteer at here in El Paso. We used automated irrigation or we can’t grow veggies. But the cool thing, we can grow cool weather veggies through the fall and winter here with light protection! : )

I knew when Andy took the long way through the woods that they must be headed to pick peas so he was stalling lol! His love/hate relationship with the peas is hilarious. Petey is a smart one because he always seems to show up after the pea picking is done. I'm guessing some of the crops you said will be coming up soon will be sweet corn, beans, zucchini and squash, and cucumbers. And I suspect your red beets should be ready too

Hi Andrew and regarding your last pea picking (planning to reseed or replant the pea patch with another crop): It's my understanding that pea roots are particularly "nitrogen from soil captive", i.e., they create relatively high plant protein tissue, which can be "hayed' for animal fodder. The non-harvested or over-ripe peas and pods are always close to good grass/hay fodder. You may already be aware of all of this. I'm a 73-year retired environmental engineer, who emigrated to Calgary, Alberta, Canada - from Denmark - in 1974. I learned from my uncles (operating a family-owned 45-acre mixed farmstead - since the mid-1700s- that pea and alfalfa crops had great plant protein values (roots, leaves and pods) for animal fodder (dairy cows, pigs and chicken - and grass pasture and crop fields) or to plough it into the soil to rejuvenate soils with natural biologically available nitrogen fertilizer. Came 10 years ago, a long-term friend of mine decided to change career and become a sheep and goat rancher. He bought a 120 acre ranch east of Calgary with original prairie grass pastures that had never been under plough for 100 years (when being steer pastures with a nearby stream irrigation water supply). He determined that purchased round bailed pea straws were less expensive than locally available grass based hay, at least until the end of Dec. - with a relatively high plant available nitrogen/protein content. However, he had to expend on these purchased fodders Nov. through mid-Apr. when his pastures for 600 heads were not available to feed them. Just this info FYI. I'm one of your many subscribers because I like your episodes, which are a reminiscence of the numerous times I visited and stayed at my DK family farm since age four.
