The downsides would have been huge. Like take your phone out of your pocket in a hurry and one of the side modules slide and fall off on the floor, street, bus, cab, etc. You talk on the phone and a thief/snatcher subtly steals just one or two modules from behind without you noticing. And to think of the dust accumulation and scratches as result this would have under the modules.

If this phone took off, market would have become way different. The components/specific functionality modules would have cost way more than the base model of phone with basic function. So those is what kisses me off, they are ripping off a phone called Phonebloks, and guess what the had working prototypes and guess what the had groups like Verizon atnt and Samsung's and many other complains as third parties to creat there own bloks, and the only reason it didn't get in to development was because they where I think 50,000 of the asked donations. Oh and another thing, it would have many price ranges for the bloks them selves. So yeah screw this project.
@rydude998
@rydude998 10 жыл бұрын
Jacob Bewley You're mistaken, Phonebloks was the concept that inspired this. Phonebloks never had working prototypes nor did they ever plan on making them. The creator of Phonebloks wanted companies to join together and build a phone that could use modules from different retailers. The 50,000 number you're thinking of was the requirement for a "shout". A shout was a worldwide acknowledgement of the concept on every form of social media. This project is a HUGE step to the future Phonebloks envisioned. Please educate yourself.

Is that such a bad thing ? I get the impression that you think this is in some way a step back? I don't think so. @OliverHamilton
@OliverHamilton 10 жыл бұрын
And look at what that did for PC hardware! Imagine how far behind we'd be now if you could only buy a PC as a unit item. They'd be more expensive because the volumes of components sold would be much lower. Software (games) couldn't push the latest hardware all the time because people would only buy a whole new PC every 3-4 years and the devs wouldn't want to slash their potential market by coding something only a small percentage could run. I'd be well happy to have a chubbier phone for those capabilities. - Today my phone is going to be a 2x4 phone with loads of battery modules. - Today my phone is going to be a monster 6x4 media device. - Today my phone is going to be a photographers dream (light meter module?)

yup, it's great. for example, i'm a broke ass student and even though i want a smartphone with decent or superior camera, all the phones with good camera sensors are extremely expensive, because they do not only offer a good camera but also a bunch of other stuff that i might or might not need but would have to pay for anyway even if i only want the quality camera. with an ARA phone, however: i could simply purchase a cheap ass phone for basic functionalities that i'll ever need, and buy a camera module to snap it on, and da-dah!! ø want and upgrade in RAM or SoC to play that new game that just out? no need to buy a whole new phone, snap! upgraded. ø damaged mic or speaker? snap! replaced. ø parents want to borrow my phone for a certain function that my phone has that's better than theirs? no need to borrow the whole phone. here, trade the parts for mine! ø using phone as a backup, hence don't need all these expensive parts? guess what, i'll just trade with my brother's less expensive ones so he can get an upgrade for cheap and i can get some monies dollarzz in return! ø oh crap, my phone is out of batter and i need to call someone real quick, but i can't find the battery or charge the phone, and i also need to power it on because i don't remember their number! no worries, let me borrow someone's ARA phone and put my internal storage module on, so my data along with all the contacts is instantly on that phone! boom. and not just contacts, exchanging gigabytes of data is now at the snap of a finger! ø waitaminute, if that's the case i can upgrade the whole phone without having to set up and transfer everything, because i can simply carry the one essential part with all the necessary data on it! what sort or sorcery is this? ø oh, what is this, a new censor they just developed and just appeared on the market? i guess i'll replace that finger print scanner module with this module of 3D motion scanner then! oh, going to the pool and want to take some shots under water? guess i'll just pop out that 13MP regular camera and put on a lower density, 5MP camera in exchange for water-resistance! ø i have no need for this 4GB of RAM and in need of some cash, anyone with a 2GB module want to trade? by the way, i don't even need the money, if you have a better camera than mine - then we have a deal. ... yup, definitely endless possibilities.

i was working on a similar project like this.but we can also change the ram and processor module. the body was not sleek also the finger print module was biggest challenge.the we also had to maintain the security so no one can get your rom and take advantage of all the saved files. there were lots of challenges and after 2.5 yrs on working on this we lost the funding. sad

it's a good idea tbh like to have a phone like this that has different parts etc like you can add 2 cameras for wider pictures add more batteries to make it last longer add speakers and other features like they could sell the parts in shops etc and have people just customise the device to your own liking and if you can replace the screen than that's awesome

I said it was a great idea when they first came up with it. Do you know how nice it will be; to be able to replace any broken part on the phone without having to replace the whole phone? Something tells me this phone is gonna be a killer among all people. I think the majority of people are going to love this phone. As long as ARA gives the people what they want. For myself; I would like to see you compete with other smartphones in terms of latest software. A lot of ram, storage expansion, resolution, great front & back camera with DIS, finger scanner, a great removable battery with super charge speed, Lollipop 5.1.1, and an Octa-core Processor. If it at least comes with this; I would definitely buy it. The concept of the blocks is great as long as you can accommodate all the updated software. I'm sure your designers can come up with some beautiful designs. I wish all the best. May you succeed in your project. Good bless.

keep in mind the pieces only come off because the magnet is in the off state. they'd have something on the software side to turn the magnet on and off changing between 3 newtons (easy to pull off but doesn't fall) and 30 newtons. which you couldn't pull off if you tried.

Cool technology, but I doubt that it will take off like the iPhone. The whole appeal of the iPhone is that you get everything in one slick, integrated package. You can do all the customization you want just by downloading software apps. I could be wrong if they start offering a whole bunch of modules for functions you can't do on an iPhone, but even if they do, Apple still has the option of coming out with a more advanced iPhone 7 or 8 or 9 that includes those functions. You can already swap out memory cards and sim cards and batteries. About the only thing you can't swap that you really need to is camera lenses.

Ur roommate could just take the whole phone, really there is no difference. If I leave my phone lying around, someone could steal it (a normal, non Ara phone for now). So if I leave a project Ara phone, maybe the thief would "borrow" (steal) a useful component. Or actually maybe the whole phone coz that way the thief leaves no trace behind. And u would most likely put a case on to stop the "problem" of components slipping if the 30N semi permanent, passive electromagnet isn't enough. Or just for the look, you would put a case. But then the phone gets thicker than it already is!! First world problems!!!!
