The downsides would have been huge. Like take your phone out of your pocket in a hurry and one of the side modules slide and fall off on the floor, street, bus, cab, etc. You talk on the phone and a thief/snatcher subtly steals just one or two modules from behind without you noticing. And to think of the dust accumulation and scratches as result this would have under the modules.

Oh and another thing, it would have many price ranges for the bloks them selves. So yeah screw this project.
@rydude99810 жыл бұрын
Jacob Bewley You're mistaken, Phonebloks was the concept that inspired this. Phonebloks never had working prototypes nor did they ever plan on making them. The creator of Phonebloks wanted companies to join together and build a phone that could use modules from different retailers. The 50,000 number you're thinking of was the requirement for a "shout". A shout was a worldwide acknowledgement of the concept on every form of social media. This project is a HUGE step to the future Phonebloks envisioned. Please educate yourself.

And look at what that did for PC hardware! Imagine how far behind we'd be now if you could only buy a PC as a unit item. They'd be more expensive because the volumes of components sold would be much lower. Software (games) couldn't push the latest hardware all the time because people would only buy a whole new PC every 3-4 years and the devs wouldn't want to slash their potential market by coding something only a small percentage could run. I'd be well happy to have a chubbier phone for those capabilities. - Today my phone is going to be a 2x4 phone with loads of battery modules. - Today my phone is going to be a monster 6x4 media device. - Today my phone is going to be a photographers dream (light meter module?)

Something tells me this phone is gonna be a killer among all people. I think the majority of people are going to love this phone. As long as ARA gives the people what they want. For myself; I would like to see you compete with other smartphones in terms of latest software. A lot of ram, storage expansion, resolution, great front & back camera with DIS, finger scanner, a great removable battery with super charge speed, Lollipop 5.1.1, and an Octa-core Processor. If it at least comes with this; I would definitely buy it. The concept of the blocks is great as long as you can accommodate all the updated software. I know I wouldn't mind a slightly heavier, chunkier phone. It gives it mass, makes it feel more like you have something in your hand, and not just a little piece of plastic. Great idea, I want to see it when they finish it.

WHY DIDNT WE GET THIS BRING IT back
@chrisweener922210 жыл бұрын
keep in mind the pieces only come off because the magnet is in the off state. they'd have something on the software side to turn the magnet on and off changing between 3 newtons (easy to pull off but doesn't fall) and 30 newtons. which you couldn't pull off if you tried.

This could never work. Mobile phone industry is based on consumers buying a whole, expensive phone and replacing it after a year or two. If phones would be modularized, companies would go bankrupt because selling these modules would just not make enough money.
@stevenjohnson42079 жыл бұрын
The future is finally at a major inventing stage. I feel like this has been a time of over saturation of the same specs or so called reinvented for that matter. I love this modular concept.
@dlwatib10 жыл бұрын
Cool technology, but I doubt that it will take off like the iPhone. The whole appeal of the iPhone is that you get everything in one slick, integrated package. You can do all the customization you want just by downloading software apps. I could be wrong if they start offering a whole bunch of modules for functions you can't do on an iPhone, but even if they do, Apple still has the option of coming out with a more advanced iPhone 7 or 8 or 9 that includes those functions. You can already swap out memory cards and sim cards and batteries. About the only thing you can't swap that you really need to is camera lenses.

Very inspiring stuff! This paradigm is clearly what PC's were supposed to be like, but have never been. And I find it interesting that Google has invested so heavily in robotics technologies, because in science fiction robots are often modular and easily upgraded. I'll be watching this project closely!

I'm so excited about ARA. I really think that this will soon become the new standard in cell phone technology and production. Now make a laptop PC where I can do the same thing. Just like a desktop, I want to be able to go inside, fuck with, switch out, replace, upgrade hardware or the screen, or the keyboard... THAT would be awesome as funk. Anyway, Jam on!
@macwas59009 жыл бұрын
LAIDBACKMANNER I think Razer had a project which had the parts of a PC in small boxes and you just push them into the case and it works.
@mewantbrains9 жыл бұрын
+LAIDBACKMANNER Somehow I think I would end up using one slot for a single chip solution and using the rest for batteries Seriously phone batteries are too low in capacity these days considering how much power the devices draw My iPhone 5S has a 1500mAh battery and at idle the phone draws 200ma per hour When playing games that goes up to 900ma per hour Making a phone call uses 350ma per hour Realistically it should have a damn iPad mini battery in it
@gate_way_9 жыл бұрын
+mewantbrains how about a module that adds battery... and you are able to easily swap that out and charge the used up battery? I mean... each one of those modules can have a seperate minibattery in them to sustain thier own needs or just have one of those bigger modules primarely for batteries... just think of it
@mewantbrains9 жыл бұрын
There are limitations to the size of the modules so I think multiple small batteries would be more easily manageable

Not really though if you'd have a password on it, since the magnets used would only go into the off-state if you'd tell them too. Awesome, isn't it? :D
@MikeTrieu10 жыл бұрын
Tony2dH Although 30N is fairly strong, it isn't so strong that a person couldn't still force the module off the endo.
@MrClassified1234510 жыл бұрын
Ur roommate could just take the whole phone, really there is no difference. If I leave my phone lying around, someone could steal it (a normal, non Ara phone for now). So if I leave a project Ara phone, maybe the thief would "borrow" (steal) a useful component. Or actually maybe the whole phone coz that way the thief leaves no trace behind. And u would most likely put a case on to stop the "problem" of components slipping if the 30N semi permanent, passive electromagnet isn't enough. Or just for the look, you would put a case. But then the phone gets thicker than it already is!! First world problems!!!!

This is the best mobile idea instead of buying a full phone with a ram + storage + (GPU) + everything, you can just upgrade your phone with cheeper price instead of buying full phone
