This is Chả Trứng Chay, also known as Vietnamese Egg Meatloaf (made vegan!) It's a very comforting homestyle dish that is so easy to pull together, very protein packed, and great for meal prep (and lunches!). It's also great for a summer meal especially when it's so dang hot. It's refreshing with fresh veg and the sauce, and savoury and comforting served with rice (or if you have it, broken rice)

Why isn't your logo using the Vietnamese flag? - Actually I use the South Vietnam flag because it represents Viet Kieu (Vietnamese immigrants after the fall of Saigon), my parents were both boat refugees before immigrating to Canada. My logo combines two parts of my identity: Maple leaf because I'm Canadian, and the South Vietnam flag because I'm Vietnamese :)

You can put a kitchen towel to drape across the steamer and then put the lid on. That way it will catch the condensation and no drippy drippy! :)

I think sometimes people have a certain persona and life they want to keep on KZbin and I think it can be healthy to have your work life and personal life separate, but for me that sounds exhausting and I can't keep up with that lol. What you see is what you get XD

I live in a city with a lot of Vietnamese people and I go to tiny little Vietnamese restaurants where I'm frequently the only non-Asian person there. No matter how humble the food is, they seem to take great pride in adding fresh vegetables to the plate. The minute you added the two slices of tomato to the plate next to the cucumber the dish became more appetizing.

So I made my version, but substituted the vegan ground meat with rye bread (store bought). It turned out surprisingly pleasant but I guess it's not as good as yours. I still consider it a success! Thank you very much!!!!

I'll definitely try this!! Thank you very much! Yum yum. I've tried NP Family recipes' version of chả trứng chay with only tofu and it still holds together. I can't wait to try a version with vegan ground.

I've seen people put a cloth over the pot then place the lid on top of the cloth to prevent the water from gathing up onto lid and then dripping onto the food.

Oh I gotta make this ❤️ I miss eating this from when I was little. The one that’s abit jelly with lots of black pepper and black fungus is nice too.

Hahahah black pepper, fungus, and pig ear XD I've had it recently made vegan and my mom's friend replaced the pig ear with shredded mushroom! It was actually so good. I don't have a recipe for it, but if you can understand Viet, I've seen chay versions on KZbin on Viet channels (which is how my mom's friend made it)

My local Viet Buddhist restaurant makes a vegan version of this. It is the best. They also make the vegan chicken meatloaf. So good! Thanks for sharing your recipe 😊

If you have like a large pot with metal colander that's low enough for you to put the baking dish in with some water in the bottom, you can cover the lid and steam! I've done it that way before back in my uni days where all I had was 2 pots and one pan haha.

@@Thevietvegan ah! I was searching exactly for this kind of comment & reply! Thank you! I was thinking about the water dripping problem, maybe i could cover the pan with aluminium sheets so the water can't reach the loaf. What do you think?

@@glitch84- I think you still need the moisture to help it cook... so I'm not too sure! Someone suggested that you drape a tea towel on top so it doesn't drip in?

I know this recipe is now perfect but for future reccipes have you tried 'Liv b's' mung bean egg recipe, its a 'just egg' copy, we dont get 'just egg' in Ireland so i have no comparison however, her recipe is brilliant and super easy. P.s, I love 'those vegan guys' as well!!!

I love vegan food...but WHAT is wood ear/ black fungus? I saw it in the Asian grocery store frozen section (no hard to find vegan items there, sadly). I've never heard of it before...very interested in making this meatloaf though. 😊

It's a type of mushroom/fungus lol. Actually I learned that i can grow natively in Ontario too! Its pretty cool.

Parallelogram = rhombus that is not extreme. Yes that's 100% what I was taught in high school geometry LOL jk. Dude this dish totally takes me back!! I never wanted to eat the bbq meat in com tam so I just ate the rice with the egg loaf thing. MEMORIES.

It's vegan fish sauce, I can't remember the brand but I've shown the bottle recently in my spring roll video as well as my WIE video (half bread half viet food) I believe. I got it at B&Ts in Kitchener (also have seen it at Coven in Hamilton)

Lisa girl I so wanna make this but can’t find the Lightlife Ground Round WAH!!!! I bought Lightlife crumbles, Lightlife ground sausage and Impossible ground. Which would be the most favorable from your perspective? I’ve been to five stores including Wegmans to no avail.....😭

have you seen youtuber Maddykoko's omelette chilla vid? kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoqYqaynZ76eprM [he does indian vegan recipes] the consistency and texture is very interesting. maybe his mixture might help with the egg part of this meatloaf? something to play & experiment with. its a blend of (chickpea) besan flour and oat mixture that looks exactly like an omelette. the flavour may need adjustments according to taste. i am going to test it out. im thinking of adding a bit of silken tofu to get that eggyness for a thicker omelette.

Ahhh it's chickpea based T_T I admit that I've come to dislike chickpea eggs haha. Honestly the tofu part works PERFECTLY in this recipe. I've tried making it a few different ways and it was just so simple and tasty with the extra firm tofu!

I'm Vietnamese, I'm living in Vietnam and I have the access to all the ingredients to make the traditional meatloaf but not this vegan meatloaf. Now I am sad.

@@Thevietvegan New sub here, sorry I wasn't sure. I live in Cambodia but I I've never seen a vegan fish sauce. In Thailand and Malaysia they have tons of delicious vegan restaurants (Buddhist-Taoist affordable restaurants), I was hoping to go to Vietnam to check out the food but a sudden serious health condition is forcing me to be unable to walk, cook and do most other stuff. Please teach me new recipes 🤗. Here in Cambodia, I'm staying with a family, sometimes they make incredibly delicious vegan spring rolls. How do you make them crunchy outside and creamy and soft inside. A big hug and thank you, sister! 🤗☺️😁
