@@linger4605 In many systems, the curriculum is more of a framework than a rigid script, giving teachers the flexibility to decide how to teach the required concepts and skills. Example: A curriculum might mandate teaching fractions, but the teacher can choose whether to use worksheets, games, or real-world examples to explain the concept. It’s okay that the world isn’t as black and white as some want it to be. It never has been

I am a retired teacher who just spoke with my still teaching friend this morning. She was telling me about the new math curriculum the school district adopted. It's a whole lot of fluff and not much substance. Guess who decided to adopt this program? It was the higher ups that do not work in the classrooms. Teacher pay is indeed important, but so are teachers' voices. It's about time that we not only ask their opinions but listen to them.

They are all missing the point. H1B visas are not a relatively new thing, we’ve been relying on them for quite a bit now. But H1B visas are meant to fill the void of a lack of professionals, not replace them. Tech did massive layoffs of AMERICAN workers not too long ago which they now want to REPLACE with H1B workers. This is absolutely a case of the tech industry pursuing labor exploitation.

Many of the students who do poorly in schools (or misbehave/fight) come from parents who did poorly while they were in school. The parents don't really know how to parent and don't always understand how to encourage and help their child when it comes to their studies. So, at home, the kids are exposed to parents bad-mouthing their teachers and schools, showing apathy towards their child's achievements, and being too busy to be able to put much effort into it anyway. Of course all that's going to be carried into the classroom and the cycle continues. I know of what I speak. My parent and step-parent were poorly educated, and both worked, and never got involved in their children's school activities unless one of us was getting in trouble. Luckily, I was able to work my way beyond that.

Absolutely! Elon’s been laying off qualified American workers at Tesla and replacing with with H1B employees. Everyone who’s been in the tech industry is well aware of this. When I worked for a large software company there were huge layoffs but then they brought back the same workers as contractors for a little more in salary but no benefits. It has nothing to do with qualifications at all.

This is when Sunny feels ingenious to me. Sunny AND her Husband are both First-Gen Caribbean people. Sunny always mentions how her husband was taught by his immigrant parents to be a surgeon at a young age. Similar to herself, she became a lawyer. The first female vice president is a first generation American. Immigrant families do prioritize education because, they are trying to survive and build a better life for their families while forsaking their native lands. Their mindset and hustle is different than those living in this country, as would anyone who is leaving a country and coming to a new one from ground zero.

Yup, people who are as you stated are called elitists and snobs and all kinds of things. If I tell people my resume, I've been accused of lying and witness such a level of insecurity and defensiveness that I try not to even speak of it much anymore. What we are seeing is an almost comical full circle coming on where the side that pressured society to become more stupid and distrustful of experts and facts (partly because they know the college educated demographic usual votes blue and stupid people are easier to exploit and manipulate) now wants to stop all immigrants including the highly skilled ones (which the Right likes to exploit) so that we can keep these jobs for Americans many of whom have been dumbed down and we don't have enough qualified to fill those highly skilled jobs. The Right also faces a dilemma that they would also have to actually pay higher wages to American workers in those jobs so I'm not sure they have really thought things through or are just unreasonably all about wanting their cake and eating it too. The even more comical part is a stupid, low paid society won't be competitive in the world and also won't be able to sustain the wealthy fat bank accounts of these super rich people like vivek and elon. Honestly, the circle goes round and round with these guys on the Right. Bless their little hearts, I guess.

Young women have not been encouraged to display intelligence throughout history. I was a military brat so I grew up going to 9 different schools in 7 different locations. In all of them I felt like I had to hide the fact that I got the highest grades in order to be tolerated by my classmates. Those students did not appreciate being told the grades would not be "graded on a curve" because there was a student in their class who had scored 100%. I even got harsh looks for that while getting a graduate degree. And no guy likes the smart girl unless he's a really smart guy. We must change the attitude of this culture to encourage study and academic achievement in females! Tell the little girls "It's OK if you know the answer and he doesn't. This goes so much deeper. I would really love for these ladies to get people who have actually taught in the classroom in on a live panel to ask these questions and really truly have the courage to answer these questions without fear of losing their job. This would be more than an hour long to dig into what our expectations truly are as a nation. Seriously, we need true discussion and listening. This is more than telling kids what they can't do. That never works. Everyone deserves their dreams. It's how we begin. What needs to happen is an overall system rehaul where a STEM and STEAM curriculum is interwoven with the expectations of what we need our children to do. You cannot just expect a human to meet a standard and not apply critical thinking. That is what state standards do. And it is all for the benefit of a vote or lack of a vote. The beauty of STEM and STEAM is that when it is interwoven properly with the arts you get a person who sees big picture, knows how to collaborate, knows how to communicate, and can apply a process level thinking which is so much more precious than meeting an assessment. We also need to be pushing back for the blue collar jobs that really are the lifeblood of a community. These are not "bad jobs" these are amazing jobs. These people have skills, know their craft, and have the ability to teach. Give them where credit is due. I've been teaching for 23 years and I can tell you that the expectations in this country for education have considerably lowered. A lot of it has to do with politicians their expectations and what they agree to lobbyists is important for your children to know. In other words your children are easier to manipulate than you are because they are not given the same level of education that you were. Like I said this goes deep.

Retired teacher here…… also did not vote for Trump…..but the national department of education is a joke. They make standards and such for every American student when in fact, the state and local boards of education know what’s best for their students. Give all that federal money to local schools. I know it’s an unpopular opinion. Have standards, of course. But quit micromanaging the teachers. It’s criminal what’s expected of these poverty level income teachers.

The one and only time I agree with Vivek. As a teacher of 40 years, I have seen the dumbing down of the education system so students can pass standardized tests. Students look for the easy way out of doing their work and rely on calculators and AI to do their work for them. They want everything to be a game and fun. I tell my students that expecting everything to be fun will not prepare them for life. If they get a job and it isn't fun, they quit? Sadly, that is the case with some young Americans I know. If I had to use one word to describe American students it would be "lazy".

When my son came home with a spelling test that was 8right 6 wrong I asked him why he didn't study the words and he said "oh, thats not how they do it, they just want to know who knows how to spell already" Same problem with hospitals... seeking information rather than providing information.

I know a few of those folks with work visas. They’re highly smart and get the job done. It is a cultural thing, cause most American parents don’t push their kids like Indian/Asian/Latino parents do. It is also an education thing. America is so behind on education and I noticed every state has a different curriculum which makes it even worse.

At the same time we ( DJT ) is going to deport tons of people. So how are we measuring IQ? Them compared to us? I'm a first generation American. There's two side to the argument. 1. Yes, prioritizing your kids developing useful skills and want to put in the work matters. You cannot expect society to do this for you. American parents need to stop expecting someone else will do the parenting you aren't doing. 2. Yes, the rich are exploiting these visas to hire cheaper labor. They use this to simply save money. Not all, but some are. 3. Americans imo, are generally entitled and lazy. I'm sorry, I've worked along many and....the nonsense I hear. Most don't want liveable wages, they want above it starting. Go to any construction site in America and see who is standing around gossiping and who is in the trenches.

Here’s the bottom line. Remember back in the 90’s and 2000’s call center jobs were shipped to India and the Philippines. Not because Americans couldn’t do the jobs, but because of corporations want to save money. Now they are doing the reverse flooding high tech paying jobs with cheap Indian labor. The visa holders get paid less, don’t complain because they will lose their job and be deported. All the jobs that were lost at twitter were American jobs. The people left, visa holders that will be worked into the ground. Just for the record. I am 1st gen Indian. My father came here on a student visa in the 70s and applied for citizenship. He was a mechanic.

EVERY SINGLE KID with one or 2 female exceptions ALL think they are going to make millions as GAMERS. Kids of all socio-economic background live in their basements playing video games ever waking moment. THAT, in my opinion, is the ROOT CAUSE of so many problems in this country. AND, with all due respect.., whoopi, putting this all on low paying teacher is a sliver of the problem. PARENTS must take the Lead on what is going on in their kids lives. Parents blame the schools and the teachers while they are spending their free time watching football, shopping or spending time entertaining their spoiled kids. I was there, I saw it.

People that are born and raised in the United States don't see the value in 'working hard'. They've seen how that doesn't amount to the same advantages that their parents experienced, due to rising living costs and an income that doesn't match. Whereas people coming in from other parts of the world are willing to work their behinds off for less, because the alternative is a life of poverty. Why not address the value discrepancy and promote the quality of life for US citizens and this issue would be addressed? That's the conversation that I think needs to be had.

The issue isn't cultural differences; it's that countries like India and China have been significantly increasing their federal budgets for free higher education and providing more resources for students. A key factor to note is that many H-1B workers come from generational wealth and have access to opportunities in their home countries that many of their peers do not. In contrast, here in the U.S., Congressional Republicans have been working to cut funding for free education, forcing many students into significant debt just to pursue higher education. This lack of support creates a disincentive for pursuing advanced degrees, particularly in STEM fields.

Why not take a look at the STEM statistics? The U.S. is focused on attracting the top 1% of global talent, as it struggles to surpass countries like Indonesia in STEM education metrics. The idea of competing or equating with nations like India or China, each with populations exceeding a billion, is almost laughable. As comedian Russell Peters humorously pointed out, perhaps it's time to push children harder to excel academically. If the H1-B visa program were canceled, have you considered the consequences for your country? It's clear that the U.S. is already facing a decline, and such a move would only accelerate it.

Unfortunately she is a white girl who does not play sports. She did not get any special scholarships. And I don’t know if we can afford to keep her in school. She commutes and works two jobs. She works so hard and even finds time to volunteer with me. She sees all her minority friends getting free rides barely making an effort is school and it just is not fair. If anyone deserves to have help, it is her. So the reason I think we are falling behind is because we are not supporting the people we should in school. There should be an incentive if you are doing so good. That is who the scholarships should be going to. It should not be based solely on your ethnicity.
