Too many people idolize Tony and try to pattern themselves after him. Scarface is a cautionary tale of wanting it all and people still miss that to this day.

Because he has aspirational qualities. There are absolutely impressive and aspirational qualities about him as a person. Intelligence, tenacity, bravery, ambition, all those are great qualities. The problem is when they miss out what all the things he applied those qualities on did to him in the end. As the Vile Eye says, if he put his mind into something positive that would get him slower money and success, he’d still make it. His problem was getting mixed up in illegal activities that got him there faster, but destroyed everything in the end.

Maybe there's a grey area with Micheal Corleone, but Tony Montana is definitely not an anti- hero because his actions didn't save anyone. I wouldn't count the mother and children in the car because he didn't set out to save them, he prevented them being killed circumstantialy. An anti-hero saves people or serves good and justice through evil means. The punisher is an anti-hero. Taxi driver (Travis Bickle) is an anti-hero.

@@jorgepluas6837 The Cuban-American community hated this movie so much they forced the production out of Miami. The movie was primarily filmed in California for that reason. The critics also hated the movie when it came out. It had a lot more obscenities and drug use for a mainstream Hollywood film than people were used to in 1983. Plus like you say it was way too real. Miami had a huge drug trafficking problem in the early 80s and it was very unsafe. People were just not ready for Scarface back then.

I think with that statement Frank gave, perhaps the Analyzing Evil guy can maybe do a video on Rafe Adler from Uncharted 4: a Thief’s End. Rafe came from a wealthy family, but was bitterly envious of Nathan Drake’s achievements and was desperate enough to try and outshine Drake.

I enjoyed the PS2 sequel tae Scarface. One thing I loved, in that great game was something that was pretty minor. You cannot kill innocent people. Tony can take out his gun, aim it at a civilian, but when you pull the trigger, he instead puts the gun away and says things like, "Get your fucking head straight Tony". It was 100% in character for him! Also, Jaws has a cameo in it.

Almost like he wanted an opportunity to take Tony down Manny's constant whining about how Tony should use the Fed Sidelbaum guy to wash the money and his going AWOL when Tony left him in charge. Both of these are very suspicious. I've read comments about how people think that Manny was trying to take over the organisation...

Tony’s relationship with Manny is the heart and tragedy of the movie, and their decaying friendship reflects the downward spiral of all his other relationships: his betrayal to Frank, disrespect to Gina and failing marriage with Elvira, which all brought down his empire. In essence, Manny was the one who got Tony a fresh start in Miami by receiving the Rebenga hit that got them green cards and the connection to Frank and the business, but throughout the whole movie, Tony kept stepping over Manny like his subordinate rather than respecting him as an equal. The other irony was Tony’s refusal to carry out the hit on that family for Sosa, which was really his only redeemable value in the movie, but that also sealed his doom and for those closest to him…except Elvira who got out before the hellfire rained down on the House of Montana.

Interesting take. I don’t believe he betrayed Frank as the character was portrayed. It was Frank that set up and tried to assassinate Tony, to which Tony responded the way he did. Even the dirty cop (that wasn’t a cop?) was part of what Frank had going on. And the discovery of Frank’s right hand man being an undercover and possibly being part of Tony’s friend I’m the beginning of the movie being murdered didn’t sit well. Tony admitted to doing things in the side, but not to cross Frank. The Manny situation conflicts me. Tony told him not to mess with his sister. Then Gina went missing and people were concerned about her. Tony was shocked to find Manny was behind her sudden new behaviors and disappearance. Manny and Gina hid the relationship. And Gina played to Manny’s ego, making him disregard Tony’s wishes. So rage took over Tony in that moment. I think if Tony had time to think, he wouldn’t have done that to Manny. The Elvira relationship is the dirtiest, low down thing that Tony did in my opinion. That’s ruthless to kill someone, take their woman, and then treat her like she’s nothing. But Elvira’s coke addiction might’ve had something to do with the treatment and disrespect. That’s why I love this character extremely flawed, but relatable in some aspects. At least in my opinion.

@@JesterJoker89 Here’s the sequence of events: • Frank brings Tony into his business • Tony covets Frank’s woman and position by calling Frank “soft” • Tony meets Sosa and tries to go over Frank’s authority on their first deal • Tony continues to belittle Frank by taking his seat next to Elvira at the club, which prompted Frank to send Bernstein (cop) to shakedown Tony, then the 2 hitmen to snuff him out…so I’d say Tony really drew First Blood.

True. Tony,despite being a felon,had some principles. He refused to carry out the assassination of the journalist after he noticed his wife and children being in the car with him(An act which sealed his fate,as he now made a very powerful enemy,Sosa,who probably would've stopped at nothing to eliminate Tony). I thought that was a very enlightening moment,and also made me wonder if Tony was not slightly remorseful of his actions up until then? Also,he wanted to provide for both Gina and his mother(despite her outright refusing his money,saying they were dirty). That demonstrated that he cared for his family. And yes,the scene where he shoots Manny,that was heavy,man... Although I think it was coke fueled rage,and probably Tony wouldn't have reacted so viciously if not under the influence of coke.

@@necrolord9908 There is a duality to Tony’s feelings toward women that comes to mind, which I thought the film brilliantly examines in the case of Gina and Elvira, which were his true loves, one as his sister and the other as his woman…but he doesn’t really know how to Respect either. He does have a fondness for children and he was hoping Elvira to mother his, so that carries over to his decision to not carry out the hit on the activist and his family. That was his only redeemable virtue, which may have absolved him from absolute Evil, so there was a poetic justice to having Elvira and his mother spared from among his 2 biggest casualties, Manny and Gina. If he had gone through with that hit in NY, he would have lived longer and his empire would’ve continue to grow, but karma would eventually take everything and everyone from him including his mother and future offspring.

Another great scene that one,Tony berates Elvira because of her heavy drug use(which possibly rendered her infertile and incapable of conceiving children) and inability to have a child with her. "Her womb is so polluted". Elvira responds in kind,reprimanding Tony for his behavior and asking the question "Will you even be alive by the time he goes to school?" I think that really hit Tony hard... Also,how devastated must've been Mama after losing both her children in one night? Man...

Scarface is one of the great modern tragedies, the rise and fall of a flawed, charismatic bastard who ultimately destroys himself with his own ambition. That, Death Note, and Breaking Bad are the trifecta. Shakespeare would love this shit. Speaking of which, how about a video on Light Yagami from Death Note? He's an endlessly fascinating villain protagonist.

Tony's dismissal of Frank's rules speech and other principles in the beginning does a great job of foreshadowing his fate. By the end of the movie Tony has broken every rule or piece of advice Frank tried to give him.

Montana Realty Company was his front business. Gina was Tony's kid sister, who in his eyes he always had to protect. He wanted her away from that life as much as possible. Giving Gina her hair salon was just a loving gesture to his sister. Even then using it as a front wouldn't make sense logically anyways as Tony was bringing in millions a week to the bank no salon in the world could make that much money. Its beyond me why you would think he'd use it as a front.

@Ben Magnez Something I find very interesting with Vito Corleone is that even though he seems very diplomatic filled with honor, respect, and intelligence. He also has a gross and barbaric side that you would see in a mentally unstable psychopath locked up in an asylum. Like it was his depraved idea to cut off a horse head and put it in a bed, or the brutal executions he carried out towards the man that killed his family and Don Fanucci. Though it's very understandable why he killed them both, and they themselves are terrible people. The way he handled it, was not diplomatic or clean at all. It was just his beast-like nature that came out and torn them apart.

Something that I really like about Tony as a character is he doesn’t try to manipulate to get what he wants, he takes it, even if it could get him killed he says how he truly is feeling and stands by It, which catches people in the movie off guard and the audience

frank gave tony two words of advice at the beginning of the movie: never underestimate the power of greed, and never consume your own product. by the end, we see tony's judgement slipping exponentially due to his addiction to cocaine, and his greed driving him into a bad business deal that results in his money laundering scheme being caught.

When i first watched this movie i thought it was just going to be a big dumb, violent shootout movie (definitely violent) but came away realizing it's actually a masterpiece of crime drama. the video explains tony perfectly, coming from dirt, going to the top and ironically losing his mind because he finally got everything he wanted. "the world is yours" Scarface is the ultimate story of excess and greed, and the betrayal and loneliness that it breeds. In the end of the movie, Tony has to make his final stand alone (ignoring his little friend). "you need an army you wanna take me" indeed, Tony holds out for a time, but in the end the lesson is that any 1 man can still be felled, standing tall from his perch, to be quickly thrown down to the bottom.

I think the whole ending was his self destruction due to his disillusionment of success. He made it the way he wanted to and he finished the way he wanted to, in a hail of gunfire. Yes he was a bit control freak, even with his sister's life. But, That control and worry was coming from his brotherly care, not his selfishness and attraction. He was aware of the kind of a world (his lifestyle, people he interacted with, his business) he lived in and its consequences. This can be seen in the club scene where he gets mad at the sight of some high roller punk touching her body and even when he lashed out at manny early in the movie for looking funny at her. I find the details in dialogue fascinating. When Tony and Elvira are dancing at the Babylon Club he denies coming of a banana boat. When he was asked before at the interrogation if he had ever been at a mental hospital, he states "Yes, on the boat coming over." Many times he is denying parts of his past making him look pretty torn, with questionable success as an only way out. Also Manolo`s blind dedication as a follower is portrayed in little lines every now and then. After meeting Omar and El Mono for their first job Tony tells Manonlo not to worry or he's gonna have a heart attack. Just in the next scene in the car on the way to the deal at the beach Manolo already internalized this and repeats almost the exact line. Also some short bits make Tony look pretty uneducated, like in the tub confusing Flamingos for Pelicans. And when he is meeting Elvira by the pool he even admits that he has no education but "knows the streets". This kind of self awareness he is only showing to Elvira. The whole movie is full of that subtle stuff, a true classic.

Thus a ruthless being that could climb through the 1980s criminal underworld unhindered was born, yet also a human too forgiving to stay on top kept on existing as Montana got to his crumbling peak.

I like how Manny and Tony reflect the flaws of vice but have a duality. Tony had the power but no control. Manny seemed more foolish and less powerful; but his loyalty was absolute and his concerns over security and love were the vital thing and the heart of the empire. I think it shows something about addiction too; Many stopped chasing women for love, but the cocaine was something Tony just kept consuming.

I think more could be said about Tony’s almost sheepish and in the dark way about trying to get together with Elvira while she’s with Frank. It’s kind of a complete 180 of his character, but then again it could be the traditional side of his mother showing its face.

There was also a moment where he paused for an elderly person crossing the street IIRC. He could be kind.. when it suited him. As for a future analysis, I'd appreciate Daniel Day Lewis as Bill the Butcher from Gangs of New York. The man was brutal but commanded respect as even he respected his enemies. He admired the priest who game him a beating earlier in life (he called him a great man for doing it). He taught Leo's character various qualities and values. When the challenge at the end is issues, he simply says challenge accepted like a sigh of relief, as if it's what he's always wanted and was waiting for. Even when they're discussing the term of battle and Leo's character says no guns in the coming fight, Bill expresses admiration for the choice. Truly, Bill the Butcher probably ranks in my all time top 5 best villains in movie history.

Tony Montana was a "bad guy" and definitely not someone to look up to, but he definitely wasn't "evil". He was greedy, arrogant, overly-ambitious, hot-headed, and stupid. But he did have a bit of honor and integrity - and he did have his own sense of morals and ethics. He never intentionally harmed or messed with innocent people. He refused to harm women and children. And as he even said, he never screwed over anyone that didn't have it coming to them. If you're a random person that minds their own business and doesn't insult or disrespect Tony, he's not going to target you or harm you. Also, with the exception of escaping legal troubles, he was a man of honesty. As Sosa even said: "There is lying in you, Tony." Tony was a straight-shooter who always spoke the truth to those close to him - whether they liked it or not. This is not the description of an "evil" man. "Evil" is what the SS Nazis were. "Evil" is what the Imperial Japanese Army was. "Evil" is men like Hitler and Stalin. "Evil" is ISIS and South American cartels. These are people that WILL harm innocent people. They WILL kill women and children, and think nothing of it. They have no mercy and no remorse. They lie, cheat, manipulate, use shady and dishonest tactics, etc. And they are ruthless and monstrous in ways that Tony Montana would never even dream of being. Tony was none of these things. Tony was definitely not an "evil" man, at least in my opinion.

To me this is a reductive definition of "evil." One that is too black and white. I'm pretty sure the people and entities you mentioned also have integrity and whatnot, otherwise they couldn't operate, but its the integrity to do the things they did. It doesn't save you from being "evil." Evil is often the byproduct of banality; it's not always as mythological or fantastical as you suggested it is. Tony still very much counts.

If you think about it, Al Pacino has portrayed a legendary gangster with certain personality quirks for three decades. Michael Corleone was cold and calculating. Tony Montana, no other way to say it, he just didn't give a "F" and broke most of the rules Frank Lopez taught him and ended up dead. Carlito's own code of honor (as Nacho Rayes told him, his loyalty would get him killed one day) did him in at the end.

My father loved Scarface and I grew up watching it (just like Tony himself) It's an important movie for our family. We are also refugees in America. It meant a lot to us. But we teach eachother that Tony is not a *good* guy. Just a man in a low place that let corruption take him over. We understand how hard it is to be a refugee. We also know how harsh the streets can be so you can make money. But scarface is a story of "it went too far" Look how much he was able to succeed as a refugee but yet he went too far. My family loves the Manny killing scene. It's such a pivotal moment in Tony's morals. He officially turned to someone worse. (It's important also because he turns on his brother. That is the man he struggled through America with. They both lost friends. Yet, Tony kills him. It shows how out of touch and lost from your roots you can be. We remind ourselves not to turn against eachother. Tony would've called Manny "Brother" any day, besides the day his sister loved him. How lost has Tony become? Don't kill a brother) Better than the Godfather

Great analysis as always. However, I think that Tony being so over protective over Gina isn't because he wants to spare her from a life of crime but because he wants her for himself. And I don't mean in an incest way, but he doesn't want ANY man to be with Gina, no matter how much of a good dude the guy would be. And I think my point is proven when Gina "offers" herself to Tony because she now believes that Tony is inlove with her since he clearly can't stand to see her with another man, even when it was his best friend. And Tony is confused by this because he never intended it to be love, just them being alone together as Brother and Sister.

Yeah I always felt uncomfortable his relationship with Gina- it was beyond extra. And I think Tony isn't capable of love- otherwise he would have recognized Mani and Gina really had something... Elvira was a possession. He didn't love her- he wanted her to be his.

Your point would have made sense if we hadn't seen Tony caring for his sister when he goes home after years AND Tony not getting mad at manny for: - looking funny at her in the next scene. - if he hadn't learned of manny slacking off from work and being absent where he needed him in the 3rd act. He doesn't want a man from his world to be with gina, even his best friend because he knows the kind of the world he and his allies live in. He was at first only uncomfortable with gina dancing with that guy but he only snapped when he saw her getting touched by him and her being taken to the washroom (which made obvious that she was going to get knocked). Even manny explains to gina that Tony wants her to be with a normal good guy. And when Tony shot manny, he didn't knew he and gina were married. Before that all he knew was that manny was becoming absent and not doing his duties and responsibilities. And when he saw his sister in the robe coming out of his friend's bedroom, he just thought of nothing but betrayal. Imagine your best friend, disappointing you alot recently and you learn that he is messing around with your sister behind your back. I mean i would be mad if i was in Tony's place.
