"If, then" has a negative connotation, that of conditional love or conditional presence, or of a transactional interaction with the God who's supposed to be the Father of love and grace. But it's not these at all! This "if, then" is the firm footing for what Matt means when he talks about the way in which God invites us into what he's doing in fellowship with Him and in power.
