As well as being a singer, don't forget that he was also an actor. That is to say, he adds an incredible level of acting, this defeated, gutted, pleading guy whom he makes talk by lengthening the consonants, as if because he doesn't know, he's lost his superbness. He's searching for words even though he knows it's already too late. He's reminiscent of those children who say, "Please forgive me, Mom, I'll never do it again, I swear. Here, a perfect command of French pronunciation is essential to understand these interpretative intentions. And just as well, I'm French.

I would also recommend another singer song writer: Georges Brassens, of that period and of a similar style though very different, with extraordinary songs, extraordinarily worded and enunciated so very precisely, little snapshots of life in a song: Je m'suis fait tout petit; Bancs publiques; Brave Margot; Les copains d'abord; Chanson pour l'Auvergnat; Le gorille; etc etc.

Culturally, there's a line in Europe that says (paraphrased) that France is the butt of Germany and Belgium is the butt of France. Belgium has an interestingly odd underdog quality, but within their itsy bitsy country, there are citizens with such attachement to Belgium that they've never left the country, which is astonishing. Belgium has amazing food and amazing beer, and their French is the beautifullest.

All I can think about is; if you are an American KZbin song reactioner and your viewers are suggesting you do Jacques Brel, you have some pretty swanky elite viewers! I view this song as (almost) a French anthem, they have a few of them. Every self respecting French vocal performer has covered this song, as if...you have to do it for your country, a French right of passage. Americans might find that problematic since Brel is Not French, he's Belgian but here's how the French tackle that with Chauvinism, they just claim the man as a Frenchman! Brel Belgian, non sense, he's a Frenchman. The French tend to do this with ultra talented foreigners whom they like, they just claim them as their own. I loved seeing this video, Thanks

People are too focused on vocal performance, on who can hit the highest or longest note. But a true vocal performance is when you interpret a great song with powerful lyrics using your guts, your heart, and your soul. you can ask to Celine Dion if it's more easy to sing all by myselft or french songs like ne me quitte pas, avec le temps, or l'hymne à l'amour and sure she will say you those french songs.

I don't think you can put as much into a song like this too many times and make it come out with all of the feeling like he does. He obviously felt some strong feeling while singing this song. Hello, I just discovered your channel, and really like the way you present these fabulous songs and give your professional opinion on them. I don't comment very often, especially in English, as it's not my mother tongue (I am French), but as you were talking about Lara Fabian and her interpretation of "Je suis malade", I went to see your video about it. I did not know on which one to comment, so here it is! I completely agree with you on her technical skills, and I really love her performance. However, maybe it's my language or culture, but if we talk about emotions, like here with Jacques Brel, I definitely prefer the original, sung by the one who also wrote "je suis malade", Serge Lama. If you have the chance... maybe you will hear what I mean. Lara's voice is exceptional, but Serge Lama... well, he wrote this song inspired by a true heartache after a painful love story with Michèle Potier, and this pain is sweating from his interpretation.

Hi Bethany , I enjoy your videos so much and you reactions . I will like you to check out this singer from Spain, Camilo Sesto in this video , Camilo Sesto -Getsemani 1977 where he sings this song based on the Andrew Loyd Webber Rock Opera Jesus Christ Superstar . Camilo Sesto not only produced and financed the Spanish version but he also played Jesus Christ in the Opera . This singer sold over 175M records worldwide and sadly passed away a few years ago . He is a balladeer singer and not a rock singer but this performance has left many vocal coaches speechless with his voice . Andrew Loyd considered this Spanish version just as good as the original English version . Please 🙏 , will love to see your reaction.

Don't remember Brel himself but this 'music' sounds familiar(radio or cassettes). Don't need to know the words to get the meaning. You can hear the emotions. Not surprisingly.. for me Lara Fabian and Edith P.. even crooner music. Come into mind. Nat K Cole's 'What'll I Do' pops into my head now but with a 'jazzy' element.

Another Belgian artist you might like is Stromae. I’m almost certain he was inspired by Brel as well.
