Grunge unplugged is like rock meets country and cranks it up to 11 as if it's a concert on the last day before the asteroid takes us all out. It's the best of all worlds. This is Gen X music, and I appreciate the fact that you appreciate it because it meant a lot to us at the time. The process you go through here trying to figure out what exactly Eddie is saying is what every single Gen X'er in college tried to figure out at the time. What exactly are the lyrics? Once you know what they are, you never forget them and the song means that much more to you and you never understand how you didnt recognize it initially. Eddie said Black is about something he really felt and still feels every time he sings it. That’s why it’s so moving. That’s the quality that a singer who’s technically good can never have if they’re not feeling what they’re singing. I’m heartbroken with him hearing this song. His voice sounds heartbroken and defeated

This time in rock and roll was so special because it disrupted mainstream music. Mainstream shifted from misogynistic party rock and campy love ballads thrown up by the over commercialized glam metal bands to this introspective, human examination and emotional struggle offered up by bands like Pearl Jam. And all of those unfamiliar nuances of a voice like Eddie's is an expression of the introspective emotional struggle that we all have tucked away. I think that's why we were swept away by it, we all can relate in some way. I love your discovery of this. Brilliant reaction.

Grunge takes me to another place, another time and I don’t want to come back to the now. Those of us who are a part of GenX and loved this genre will always, ALWAYS turn to this music. You can hear his emotions, that's what you get when you listen to Eddie Vedder. You hear the pain, the rawness. It's beautiful.

I know. EVERY time. I still get goosebumps and yes, sometimes cry, when I hear the the passion and pain from these earlier songs. I think their new album is going to be kick ass. Can’t wait‼️

Such a great reaction Bethany! Such a raw and emotional song, sung by one of the greats of the 90s. Even more amazing to see you hear him for the first time. I'm especially fond of your remarking on appreciating his intensity, and talking about how that and the air pressure plays a big role in the production of his sound. Very much agree (although I am not as adept at analyzing voice as you). You mention the emotion, and not being sure if the voice is going to crack or begin crying. I can draw a parallel to LiSA, who I think has a natural gift when it comes to both perfection of vocal production, but then the ability to lose herself in her song, the intensity of it, and get carried away inside of it - a rare gift for a singer - and it is amazing to see perfection vs almost losing control come into play in a song. That's how you should sing an emotional song - intensely, at risk of losing control of your emotions. You reacted to LiSA's Gurenge on First Take and were impressed. I wonder if you might come back to her and check out her Homura on First Take. It's amazing to see the intensity and emotion build. There's CC for lyrics in English too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoKcdYqQgcaMaLc Your reactions are among the best when it comes to vocals. I really appreciate it! That intense part towards the end is truly epic. That is indeed Eddie maining those melodic sounds in there, although the backup singers were still there too. Amazing. I'd react to more Eddie Vedder, too...
