This is the first and only take they did. This version was initially made for another singer but Haley loved it so much that she played around with it by herself. After a long day of recording during a day off during their tour Scott asked if she wanted to give it a try. She hesitated because her voice was pretty tired ar that point but he convinced her... And after that first take he said there was absolutely no need to do another. And no wonder because that... That's magic!

I had never heard her before I saw this for the first time. Having no other context, when I saw comments about how she didn't win American Idol, I figured the judges had all clearly lost their minds. I have exactly the same experience listening to this as I do when I listen to some of the greatest violinists, and pianists in the world. It's the equivalent of 'kid in a candy store' for music geeks. So many technical details to dissect and analyze.

Not that I don't like her original music, but, there aren't many people in all of musical history who can pull off that 1930s jazz vocal language the way she can. This, and the other songs she did with PMJ were lightning in a bottle. They are the highest viewed videos out of all of their others for a reason. This collaboration was pure sonic magic. Just imagine, Scott Bradlee decided to redo 2 videos in his catalog. All About That Bass and Creep. He has a day off in his European tour, with a tired Haley Reinhart. So he rents a studio in Zurich. He Records All About That Bass with Haley as one of the leads, recods Style with Haley as one of the backup singers. An then, when she's good and tired, he convinces to do Creep. Haley wasn't happy with the first take, but Scott was, and it was a wrap. Creep and All About That Bass have become #1 & #2 videos for PMJ. And it you're unsure still about Haley's growth since AI, listen to her rendition of Don't Speak.

"she didn't win American Idol" because most talent competition are popularity contests. After several years, a pattern started showing up to such an extent it birthed an acronym "WGWG" was created, that is "White Guy With Guitar". It was clear the largest voting block was young to middle aged country music loving women. Haley's season, they lowered the age to allow 15 year olds to compete. Idol promoted the bejesus out of two 15 year old country singers, a boy and a girl. Haley was cast ostensibly as 'cannon fodder', relegated to near elimination at least 3 times on the bottom 3, the two 15 year olds were never in danger of elimination. At the point Haley survived elimination & started building a fan base from eliminated contestants, the show clearly instructed the judges to criticize only Haley's performances whether she got standing ovation from the crowd or not. Haley persevered to make it to 3rd place, unable to overcome to producer's picks for the Finale. Haley's ultimate thought about her Idol journey was she wanted to at least build a fan base to springboard her career as a professional singer. This really ended up informing her decision to be an independent artist, not relying on others, making her own decisions, having confidence in her abilities regardless of outside opinion, and she's still running strong 11 years later. I have a "Haley's Journey" trilogy featuring all of Haley's Idol performances and the judge's reactions in a playlist that also includes a few of Haley's first live concerts. Do a search for "Haley's Journey", 3 1-1/2 hour videos. ✌🏻

Is it true she auditioned the year prior and didn't make it past the first stage? If so, that's an amazing turnaround in just one year. The Idol shows (in multiple countries) are about finding someone to perform on an album that has already had the songs selected for it (written by professional songwriters whose names most people will never know). The producer has probably also been chosen in advance, so the "competition" winner has to be someone that fits the songs and the producer's preferred style, instead of the other way around. Winning that show seems to be more of a curse than a blessing anyway, as the winner is locked into an unfavourable contract with little to no artistic control over their early careers. It's not uncommon for the winner's career to be eclipsed by the people who came second or third. That's probably because, having built a name and fanbase on the show, they actually have some negotiating power when other record labels come knocking (although I think Idol caught on to this and started including "right of first refusal" clauses in the entrance conditions, so they could block successful contestants from signing with other labels).

@@Pushing_Pixels A couple years ago, Haley did a talk that revealed something I did not know, a behind the scenes that was never revealed about Haley's Season 9 audition, Unfortunately, that video was taken down, a real bummer because it was a long lecture, very insightful. Anyways, Haley said that Idol actually sent a crew to her hometown, actually video'd a whole segment, interviews w/ her family, so going into the audition, she thought she'd at least make it into the show. THAT is why she was devastated and didn't expect to try again. Season 9 was Simon's last year on Idol before moving on to The Voice, so he basically sabotaged Idol by getting rid of good contestants, and entering 'less good'... Season 9 is often considered one of Idol's worst for that reason.

@@theblackdog2399 That is SO not true. Yes, this song in particular gave them a HUGE jump in popularity, but they've been ON their game, artistically, for a long time before HR. A deep dive into the back catalog will be rewarding.

@@RolandTumble23 Not only is Haley Reinhart the best performer to have ever performed with PMJ, dimwit, but prior to the arrival of Haley Reinhart, all PMJ ever played was tiny venues and cheap dives. Then after Haley arrived on the scene and quickly recorded several music videos that all went viral, suddenly PMJ was filling coliseums and arenas. As it was Haley Reinhart and no one else that put PMJ on the map and turned Scott Bradlee into a freaking millionaire. In fact, the entire reason why and how Scott Bradlee became a millionaire is because of Haley Reinhart turned PMJ viral. The years Haley performed with PMJ were PMJ's glory years and ever since she quit them, they have been slowly going back down. As the product they put on the stage today, isn't remotely close to the product they put on the stage when Haley was performing with them. Had Haley Reinhart never showed up to record and perform for PMJ, PMJ to this day would still be playing only tiny venues and cheap dives and Scott Bradlee would still be barely eking out a living. Not only that wingnut, but the irrefutable proof is in the KZbin views. As Haley's music videos have almost as many KZbin views as the rest of the shitty PMJ performers that have performed with PMJ combined. Just because your taste in music sucks to high heaven loon, don't assume everyone else has piss poor taste in music like you do. Now prove me wrong moonbat. @@theblackdog2399 Wow. You are un-freakin'-believable. I don't think I've EVER had anyone go SO hard on the ad hominem personal attacks over a difference of taste. That's incredibly rude, and further is absolutely uncalled-for. Plus, you're _demonstrating_ your own dimwittedness, in continuing to confuse popularity with artistic merit when I _specifically_ separated them in my first reply.. Believe it or not they are NOT the same thing. Don't get me wrong--I'm not knocking HR in any way, shape or form. She is incredibly talented, and _MAY_ indeed be the best singer to ever work with PMJ (though there are other candidates). *BUT* 1. That has next-to-nothing to do with how manty views the YT videos get, or the size of the venues in which they play live. You are almost certainly correct about the YT view count. So what? That's popularity, not artistic merit. I won't even try to "prove you wrong" on those terms, because it's meaningless in relation to what I had to say. 2. It doesn't invalidate the merit of other performers. Each performance, by each performer, stands or falls on its own. Praising Morgan James, or Puddles the Sad Clown, or ANY other performer, takes nothing away from the value of HR's performances, nor vice-versa. Failure to recognize these two points puts the validity of your opinion in a great deal of doubt. I would, frankly, prefer that you simply go away--but that's probably too much to ask. If you DO choose to reply, be sure to begin it with an apology for the needless personal attacks. If you don't , you can expect to be blocked at the very least (no matter what else you say), and I may well look into reporting you for abusiveness. I strongly suspect that this, too, is too much to ask.

Well, I've listened to this countless times and still come to tears every single time. This is absolute mastery. She masters her instrument in a way that can only be equated with the very greatest. I can hardly wait for her to come back to Europe, to see her live.

Watching all of the "reaction" video's of Haley, like most of us have, is like watching someone seeing an alien landing in a flying saucer on their front lawn.

This is one of those songs that I wish that I could hear again for the first time. Watching your reaction to her reminds me how I felt the first time I heard it. So many versions of this song out there, but this is one of my favorites.

She's done a lot of work for PMJ and solo. A couple of tours with PMJ also. I still think she should have won Idol the year she was on.

I remember her season on American Idol. She didn't even win first place. The whole top ten was insane, but she's probably done more with her opportunity than most of the other performers. BTW, if you get the chance, check out her duet with Jeff Goldblum (yes, that Jeff Goldblum) doing "My Baby Just Cares."

She can blow, her chops are awesome. She can take it outside whenever she wants to. That arrangement, sweet and sensitive when they want it to be, and greasy as hell at the flip of a switch.

Great reaction Bethany! I love your channel and love Haley. I saw her live a couple months ago and she was amazing! Very entertaining There is a video of Haley and Morgan James singing the Beatles Dear Prudence and it is great. Morgan has done several songs with PMJ and also has a fantastic voice.

great breakdown vocalyst. this female vintage interpretation and character embodiment of this classic is absolutely stunning.. just because she is a beautiful woman versus the presubscribed concept of stalker dude of the original by radiohead does not mean she can not be rejected by someone or society as a whole for being her true self and the imperfections that come with that. maybe she is obsessive, jealous or just does not fit the expected submissive girlfriend, wife, etc narrative of that time. all this creates an internal tug of war and debate within herself of what do i need to change for someone (or society) to accept or love her (i.e. be special) vs her loving herself for being authentic (i.e. remain a weirdo). although the specific circumstances are unique for each individual, we have all been there at some point and why so many people can relate to this song. however, the true masterpiece of the extraordinary performance is really just how well haley reinhart creatively taps all those mixed and conflicting emotions of the lyrics though her expansive and incredible vocals of soft breathiness, cries, belts, growls and scats strategically combined with her movements and facial expressions that creates this crazy push and pull effect that brings all those emotions out of us in both painful and satisfactory ways. her performance is an emotional roller coaster ride with postmodern jukebox providing the theme park underneath her. it's almost like she goes through the 12-steps of rejection and self acceptance in 4 minutes and 55 seconds. it is amazing and will go down as one of the best performances of our time.

@@ole9421 i actually had the chance to see her perform in person a year ago today and briefly met her before the show with a meet and greet. she is much more petite and soft spoken in person than you would expect considering how big a presence she puts on stage but super genuine and authentic. here is a clip of her finale from my show here: (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIawn3itm9JjjJY ) enjoy! 😎
