I had a lot of musical schooling throughout my life since I was a small boy in my personal life, and all the way up through high school and jazz band on several different instruments including guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, violin/cello, dulcimer, brass instruments along with vocalization training music theory etc., but it’s been 30+ years since those days, and I have forgotten a lot of the terminology for some of those things that I learned back then. Dec. 1, 2023.. I saw her last night in Senatobia Ms. at the Heindl Center for the Performing Arts. It is a small venue probably 300 people. Haley performed like we were at Madison Square Gardens. Her voice is magical and engaging, from holding ultra high bars to getting down with the gravely lows in that pure smokey and guttural way that she does. She is very easy on the eyes and her voice is exquisite. Everything about her is mesmerizing. She has come far since her American Idol days and I suspect she will exceed all expectations of others and even her own expectations as well.

Scott Bradlee never gets enough love in these video reactions (glad you did). Picking the genre and then arranging it all (and performing - he's on the piano). Plus, he always picks the right talents for the song (not just the singers, but all of the musicians). From Haley, to Puddle Pity Party, to Morgan James to Gunhild Carling. I mean, he incorporates tap dancers into songs (not just the physical act, but the sound of the tap dancer, into the songs).

@@TheCharismaticVoice Just the fact these two can't make up their minds puts the finger on something that is important for a song like this. Haley really does know how to sing but her body language and way to sing kind of opposed to the subject that the song is about. In Germany for example the winners are pressed to do the stuff that is the most Chart promising, not what they really can do or they let the most malleable Singer win. The Public votes , I dont think that this goes without some Manipulation. So they create a lot of one Hit Wonders, but without substance. Wow, one of the best reactions to this AMAZING performance that I’ve seen! And I’m so glad you mentioned her hands - I’ve watched this SO MANY times and sometimes I try to isolate one thing to focus on and one of them is definitely her hands. I’ve even turned off the sound on occasion just to pay attention to her hands. LOL So...perhaps take a look at ”Seven Nation Army” next (another PMJ cover featuring Haley)?

I’m jealous you listened to Haley Reinhart for the first time. I was an instant fan of hers 10 years ago on American Idol and became obsessed, scouring KZbin for every performance she’s done. You should listen to her rendition of House of the Rising Sun - it’s epic. I appreciate you saying she employs so many unique qualities to her voice. That’s also what I admire about her, the creativity and nuances to her singing. You can tell she puts a lot of effort in. Now I’m off to watch your other videos reacting to PMJ and Haley :)

Hi Elizabeth, I have never heard of Postmodern Jukebox until today and I look forward to hearing more songs in the future! Haley's beautiful voice is full of gorgeous tones, impressive range and power! The slight sultry moves of her body were graceful movements of her arms and hands which add to the presentation! I also Love the Quintet of musicians in the background (Trombone, Tenor Sax, Piano, Standup Bass and Drums)! Thank You, Elizabeth, for bringing another Amazing singer to your channel!!! :-)

Yes, but sometimes the "loss" is more valuable than the win. You get the exposure, but you get to walk away with a fan base, without the weight of the public's unrealistic expectations...or twisted desire to see the champion fail.

I know this is many years old now, but I just found it. Thank you for breaking this down from a music expert perspective. Every time YOU explained what she was doing, I understood what you were saying, because I felt it, but didn't know the technical term(s) for what I was feeling. I've listened to many versions of this song, and Haley NAILS it from both a vocal/musical perspective AND the pure feeling/motion she puts into the video experience. I, like you, can't stop listening to this version. To me, it's perfection.

What's incredible about this performance is the back story. She had already performed several songs, she was ill and she performed it in one take. She's a former American Idol contestant from 2001 who finished 3rd. Also, her mother and father are professional blues and jazz musicians who she performed with. She's the only American Idol contestant who performed in the finals with her father accompanying on guitar.

I think it's some sort of involuntary sympathetic vocal chords contractions or something. Probably singers feel it more intensely and can explain it better, but even I, who is not a singer, feel how my vocal chords tighten and relax with the music when I hear a really really good singer as if her singing touches me on a very physical level. It's actually can get a bit tiresome after awhile, but also very exciting a lot of the times, but only when listening to very good singers that I really like and feel.

But the real proof of her awesomeness are not the polished videos, as great as they are, but the impromptu club performance with Irvin Mayfield Jr. on the Idols tour, these minimalist Room 5 performances she later did with Casey; and even more so the after-party songs she sometimes did on the street. Raw cellphone recordings, untouched by any sound engineer, settings nearly everybody has experienced with some friends ... but compare the result. That makes musicians question their life choices.
